It presents human resource issues including: human resource environments, laws affecting the human resources function, personnel recruitment, selection, training, placement, and promotion; employee compensation and benefits; employee performance appraisal and development. The course emphasizes on practical application for managers and supervisors. Text Book: Gomez - Mejia Luis R, David B Balkin, Robert L. Candy, Managing Human Resources, Seven Edition, 2012, Pearson Publishing. ISBN: Program Learning Outcomes 1. Identify essential management skills necessary for career success. 2. Describe the relationships of social responsibility, ethics, and law in business. 3. Construct a business plan. 4. Examine the role of strategic human resource planning in support of organizational mission and objectives 5. Describe the impact of corporate culture and atmosphere on employee behavior. Course Student Learning Outcomes SLO: After the course, students are expected to be able to SLOs Course Objectives 1. Describe and explain the development of 1.1 Identify the forces that contribute to the human resources management successful management of diversity it within the firm and implement HR system that assist the firm in successfully managing diversity (chapt 4) 1.2 Understand approaches to matching labor supply and demand (chapt 5) 1.3 Develop HRM policies and procedures that match the needs and values of different cultures for different stages of internationalization. Assess methods of compensation and benefits planning. 4. Discuss management's ethical, socially responsible, and legally required actions. 2.1 Conduct a job analysis and prepare job descriptions and specifications (chapt 2) 2.2 Apply flexible work designs to situations in which employees have conflicts between work and family or employers face fluctuating demand for their products (chapt 2) 2.3 Distinguish the major selection methods that maximize the hiring and promotion of the best people and use the most legally defensible of them (chapt 5) 2.4 Explain why performane appraisal is important and describe its components (chapt 7) 2.5 Determine when employees need training and best type of training given a company's circumstances (chapt 8) 2.6 Identify the costs and benefits associated with employee seperations (chapt 6) 2.7 Design HRM policies for downsizing the organization that are alternatives to a layoffs (chapt 6) 3.1 Identify the compensation policies and practices that are more appropriate for a particular firm (chapt 10) 3.2 Develop pay for performance plans and benefits package that are appropriate for different levels in an organization (chapt 11 & 12) 4.1 Explain why compliance with HR law is an important part of doing business (chapt 3) 4.2 Make managerial decisions that will avoid legal liability related to HR management (chapt 3) 4.3 Manage within equal employment opportunity laws and understanding di the rationale of requirements of affirmative action (chapt 3) 4.4 Develop policies and procedures to protect human resource information system data so that employee's privacy rights are maintained (chapt 2) 4.5 Understand the legal constraints on the hiring process (chapt 5) 4,6 Explain why the HR department must balance management's rights and employment's rights when designing employment policies (chapt 14) 4.7 Apply fair standards to the case of employee misconduct and justify the use of discipline (chapt 14)

Examine the role of strategic human resource planning in support of organizational mission and objectives. 5.1 Explain how a firm's human resources influence its performance (chapt 1) 5.2 Distinguish between the role of the HR department and the role of the firm's managers in utilizing human resources effectively (chapt 1) 5.3 Formulate and implement HR strategies that can help the firm to acheive a sustained competitive advantage and cope with workplace changes and trends such as a more diverse workforce, the global economy, downsizing and new legislation (chapt 1) 5.4 Reduce potential conflict among employees resulting from cultural clashes and misunderstanding (chapt 4) 5.5 Establish an organizational culture that supports career development (chapt 9) 5.6 Describe three types of programs used to facilitate employee communications that can contribute to business goals (chapt 13) 5.7 Outline how good employee relations and commumications can contribute to business goals (Chapt 14) Types of Instruction: * Lecture: 50% * Class & Group discussion/presentation: 50% * Students are encouraged to read the topic in advance not only to know new english lexicon but also to think critically the contents. Home essays and exercises help students to understand the subject profoundly, as well as to gain some extra scores for the course. Home essays are posted on weekly basis in moodle. exchanges with instructor and classmates are welcomed. Course Policies * Students are expected to take exam on the scheduled dates. Assigned presentation is accepted only on the due dates specified by the instructor. Modification of topic or date of presentation is not allowed unless there is a written compromise amongst students * Class attendance is important. Generally, the course material is covered in the textbook; however, lectures and small group discussions clarify the textbook material, update students with vietnam situation and develop necessary skills for future carreer * To avoid disruption of class, tardiness more than 10mn without advance notice is not granted.
