3 Welcome Sports and exercise is becoming increasingly important in society today, especially because of its connection with health. Healthy people can adjust their exercise and eating habits in such a way that they remain healthy. But this does not always succeed. There is a growing need for professionals who can bring about behavioural change in the areas of exercise and nutrition. Influencing this behaviour starts early: in education. Institute of Sports and Exercise Studies 4 Sport is not only healthy, it is also fun! Also with regard to recreation, the sport professional has the task of guiding us in healthy exercise. There is also a need for professionals who can guide elite athletes in line with new insights and technologies. These are relatively new work areas that call for professionals at every level and in all types of sport who have the latest knowledge for implementing, designing, organising and managing programmes. Both in education and elsewhere. Bachelors courses Physical Education Teacher 6 Sports and Physical Education 8 Sport, Health and Management 10 Professional Masters in Sports and Movement Innovation 12 We invite international students to come and study at our institute and to contribute to the development of different sports and exercise disciplines, from education to professional sport! 4 4 Institute of Sports an The Institute of Sports and Exercise Studies (ISES) is part of HAN University of Applied Sciences. It offers degree courses, research and services in the area of sport, exercise, health and management. These activities are focused on sport in various forms and functions and on the relationship between exercise and health. In this way, the institute aims to contribute to the development of professional and recreational sport in the Netherlands and to the health of individuals. The idea is to equip and enable people to influence their own health. ISES believes that people have skills and potential that they can develop and use to stay healthy. The focus is to empower people to live fit and healthy lives. The institute offers education in three Bachelors degree courses: Sport, Health and Management; Sports and Physical Education; and Teacher Education in Physical Education. It also offers the Professional Masters in Sport and Movement Innovation. To deepen and broaden students knowledge, it also offers minors to both HAN and external students. Mission and Vision The ISES strives to be the knowledge centre for the Euregion (the cross-border region of the Netherlands and Germany) in the area of sport, exercise and health promotion. It possesses the qualities necessary for this: professional staff, innovative and sustainable activities in the area of education, research and services. It educates inspired students to become enthusiastic professionals who can disseminate the values of sports and exercise in a clear fashion. Key features The institute is active in the triangle of education, research and services. These three groups of activities constantly influence each other. Research forms part of the courses and research results are used in the courses. New insights and concepts are developed for and within education and are used in external services. For the adequate development and implementation of the activities in this triangle, HAN SENECA operates as HAN s front-office institute in the area of sports and exercise. A fundamental choice has been made with respect to the teaching methods for the study programmes. In the first two and a half years of the programme, students operate within an educational team of students and lecturers. In the final year and a half, students choose one of the research groups, thereby choosing a particular specialisation in their studies. Research groups HAN ISES and HAN SENECA provide education, but also conduct research and provide services within five different themes that are represented by five different areas of expertise.

5 d Exercise Studies Health & Performance Our Health & Performance experts research ways for improving health within a labour-related context and thereby improving the employability and labour productivity. This team of HAN SENECA experts is involved in several projects and works together with researches in the work field. It can, therefore, directly implement new knowledge gained from the work field into the educational system. Sports & Exercise Nutrition Since the beginning of the current century, sports and exercise nutrition have become two key elements for HAN SENECA at the HAN University of Applied Sciences (HAN). The centre of expertise is leading in the Netherlands in the theme of sports nutrition. For example, the Dutch national swimming team and national track cycling team are guided by this team of experts. Sports Economics & Sports Management This team s vision is to inform and inspire sports organisations and to activate them to further and professionalise their performance. This happens by means of integrating services, conducting research and providing education. The experts aim to help sports organisations reach their goals in a changing world (of sports) by acting as a knowledge partner. These HAN SENECA experts focus specifically on the management and the economic effects of sports. Talent Identification & Development What would happen if we all decided to fully utilise each other s talents? What would the world look like in 20 years from now? At what tender age can we discover a person s talent? Which factors influence the development of a talent? How much can we influence a talent? In 2012, a group of experts assembled to make HAN SENECA a partner for several professionals in the field of sports, exercise and education. Specialisms with a prominent place for talent development were considered. The main goal was to improve the processes of identifying and developing talented athletes. on the promotion of individuals health and thereby enable people to further influence their own health. The experts are currently working on developing health policies and lifestyle programmes in which they aim to improve health (quality of life) by influencing lifestyles. Centre of expertise: HAN SENECA HAN SENECA is the centre of expertise for sports, labour and health. It provides health and performance improving services. As part of the HAN ISES, it is connected with the HAN University of Applied Sciences. Its integrated approach to health is the key element, its ultimate objective good quality of life. Partners HAN ISES has interesting partners: sports organisations at local, regional, national and international level. Students are involved in research in many of these organisations. A special location where our students work and study is the medical sports centre Papendal in Arnhem, the international exercise venue for Dutch athletes. International activities and context Internationalisation is a key issue at HAN. One important goal is to incorporate international learning activities into the current curriculum. This enables students to work on their international and intercultural competencies here on campus. We also encourage our students to make new contacts abroad, broaden their subject knowledge at an international level and meet with other languages, cultures and work methods. We seek to sustain and expand our cooperation with partner institutes abroad who share these ambitions. In the educational field, ISES cooperates with institutes in Korea, South Africa and the Antilles. HAN ISES aims to contribute to the development of health and sport conscious individuals and groups in an international perspective. Sports, exercise and lifestyle are international work fields par excellence. Our institute welcomes international students to participate in its professional learning community. Lifestyle & Health Promotion Promoting healthy behaviour can be an important aspect of a healthier society. The experts in this area of expertise focus

6 Physical Education Teacher Physical education teachers can get groups of children to start exercising and keep exercising. They teach school students how to exercise properly and show them the large number of opportunities for sports and exercise outside school. Where will you work? The professional field of physical education (P.E.) teachers is growing. P.E. teachers not only teach, they also initiate and organise joint ventures between schools, sports providers and local governments. They are also active in sport promotion programmes and in supporting sports associations. As a P.E. teacher, you could also be active in the field of social work or in amateur sports as a neighbourhood coach or coordinator. In primary education, the P.E. teacher instructs pupils or organises sports activities outside school hours. In secondary education, the P.E. teacher instructs secondary school students and develops activities for 12 to 18-year-olds outside school. Sports and exercise is fun and it creates cohesion among students. Take the sports lessons at school, for example, which consist mainly of playing sports and exercising, or the national competitions for the most sporty school. Variant for top athletes The department is developing a variant for top athletes that will allow them to combine their sport with the degree programme in Physical Education Teacher.

8 Sports and Physical Education People are becoming ever more involved in sports. Not only to stay fit and healthy or to perform at a high level, but also for the social dimension. Nevertheless, for large groups of people the value of sports is not self-evident. Such groups require a special approach. Graduates of Sports and Physical Education (SPE) are sports specialists whose job it is to get people physically active. They are all-round sports professionals who can, for instance, supervise people with a disability to achieve their sports goals and who know what is going on at local sports and playing fields. They are able to coach participants in the process of developing a healthy and active lifestyle. They also have up-to-date knowledge on leisure time, recreation and tourism and organise exercise and sports programmes for a variety of groups in all kinds of contexts. They are cut out for work that involves cooperating with others. Where will you work? Graduates of the SPE programme know how to get people more active. They develop sports activities to help people adopt a more active and healthy lifestyle. SPE graduates work as sports consultants or programme managers at municipalities or as sports and exercise specialists in child welfare and health care. They are programme leaders or entrepreneurs in the sports or recreation sector, for example, at holiday parks in the Netherlands or abroad.

Such activities may involve groups or individuals. The student can also choose to focus on sport promotion. For example, using national organisations as a platform to ensure that more people become involved in sports. Or by investigating the sports infrastructure of a city or region. The central question is: How do you get people to become active? And what areas deserve special attention when organising sports activities? Sport and health managers (SHM graduates) have a broad education and have become experts on sport, exercise and health. They are sport managers and lifestyle coaches. They advise people and organisations about a healthy lifestyle, work and exercise. Where will you work? Students who choose the graduation profile Sport Management will work as sport and health managers who connect various work fields. They come from different backgrounds, for example, sport management, physical education and sports policy. During the Masters course, students work on an innovation project for their own organisation/employer. This project forms the basis for their Masters thesis. Typical subjects in the course are: Innovation theory, creativity Sports and society Sports development Networking in sports Multidisciplinary cooperation Sports science and methodology Knowledge management Implementation theory Change management Master graduates can be characterised as follows: Graduates are experienced professionals who are able to combine and connect theory, research, practice and policy. 15 15 Dutch Higher Education In Dutch higher education, we distinguish between two types of universities: research universities and universities of applied sciences, such as HAN University of Applied Sciences. Universities of applied sciences train students for specific professions and are more practice oriented. Reputation Dutch higher education has a good reputation. Students who have obtained a degree from a university of applied sciences are well qualified to work within their discipline. Like most other universities of applied sciences, HAN maintains close ties with the professional field. Its graduates are very successful in the labour market. Bologna Treaty With the Bologna Treaty, the European Ministers of Education agreed to make study programmes in higher education more compatible. This is why the Bachelor-Masters system has been introduced all over Europe. At HAN, a Bachelors course entails four years of full-time study. Most Masters courses require one additional year. Major and MINOR Course Bachelors courses consist of a major and a minor, or elective subject. During their major, students develop the necessary knowledge and skills for their future professions. A large part of the course is spent analysing and solving problems in groups. It also includes a work placement of at least half a year. The minor is a one-semester course that stimulates students to deepen or broaden their knowledge. Credit System and Grading A student s workload is measured according to the European Credit Transfer System [ECTS]. According to Dutch law, one credit represents 28 hours of work and 60 credits represents one year of full-time study. The grading system used in the Netherlands is on a scale from 1 (very poor) to 10 (outstanding). The lowest pass grade is 6, a grade 9 is seldom given, a 10 is extremely rare, and grades 1-3 are hardly ever used. The academic year is 42 weeks long.
