Innovationsprocesser Uge U6: Future Laboratories et eksempel på Eksperimentelle projekt-processer Büscher, M., Kristensen, M. and Mogensen, P.H. (2008): Making the future palpable 1 Bio-monitors Display, AMC Display, cell-phone/pda Getting rid of wires Additional advantages: Remote multi-user access Display, stretcher New complications: Is this the right data? Is this oxymeter working? Biomonitor, patient A Base Station I Display, ambulance Biomonitors, patients B and C Base Station II 2 1
Objective to support (new forms of) emergency response work utilizing emergent pervasive technologies Methodological challenge The unknowability of future practice Invisibility (automation vs choice) Experimentation in safe, but as realistic as possible conditions is required 3 Future Laboratories To facilitate both radical imagination and experimentation, Future Laboratories introduce functional prototypes (developed to varying degrees) into as realistic as possible enactments of real work. they foster the emergence and exploration of new ways of working not only through discursive what if scenarios, but also as practically discovered, often tacit but observable and realizable possibilities. 4 2
8 Prototypes Connectivity (a wireless network) Mock-ups and partially functional prototypes of wireless biomonitors Wearable displays (simulated by laptop computers) Basestations (relaying communication from sensors into the network) Still and video cameras Prototypes of software services, applications and architectural support Mobile phones Radios 9 3
Setting first day 10 Scenes Scene 1: Multiple teams arriving what each group/person would (like to) do in this situation and in which order Scene 2: Forming a first picture of the victims quick examination who? Biomonitors and handling of them Scene 3: Patients in dangerous situations is it realistic? how would one know from a distance that a biomonitor is working? 11 4
Scenes continued Scene 4: Collecting information for an overview Creation of connections between wearable display and the biomonitors. How does one establish the connection? How does one know the connection is working? What if there are a number of different biomonitors? Are pictures a good way of identifying injured persons? What should happen automatically and what should the doctor (or others) do explicitely? How should data be presented in the overview and for individual patients? The use of hands 12 Scenes continued Scene 5: Cordoning off the area exploit and augment material practices and material objects to support and police the structuring of the incident site Marking boundaries by walking? 13 5
Scenes continued Scene 6: Freeing the victim trapped in the car The doctor must not approach the patient How does the doctor use the information he receives from the wireless biomonitors, if he is not right beside the injured person? What other information does the doctor need? How much can sensibly be displayed on a screen and how? Could an audio (visual?) link between the doctor and the victim be useful? What about active links to the hospital trauma unit where staff may be able to provide additional support? 14 Scenes continued Scene 7: Patients conditions change Should people routinely monitor all data? How? Should there be alarms? If the alarm is coming from a distant source (even a few meters away) then the receiver should have some local notification a beeper, message on radio, a vibrating notification or some such thing but what? What actions are to be taken? Who is responsible? Who is to act? What other forms of support for coordinating action is/could be made available? 15 6
Scenes continued Scene 8: Technical failure? Remote support Scene 9: The ambulance stretcher Movement of patients Should there be automatic changes to subscriptions? Based on location information? Proximity to other devices? Should the doctor be notified of the change? Should his subscription be terminated? 16 Scenes continued Scene 10: Emergency room not enacted only discussed No or very limited information from records How to switch assemblies and subscriptions for data transfers between pre-hospital and hospital systems? Should the wireless biomonitor also be used within the hospital setting? How should and could the staff in the emergency room be better prepared to receive an injured person? Which information would help? 17 7
Scenes continued Scene 11: In AMC at the hospital 18 Lessons learned day 2 The physical design of biomonitor needs improvement Design needs to support people in making the states, processes and affordances of pervasive technologies palpable. Inspection Assembling Fixing Further Exploration and widening of scope re collaboration between remote or on-site emergency and technical personnel The Future Laboratory was a rare opportunity for experienced responders to realistically enact work in an environment that also made room for reflection and imagination. experiments with the use of a predefined interdisciplinary meeting point during future drill exercises. 19 8
Bringing the AMC closer to the incident site by use of e.g. live video supports the communication and collaboration about the victim, but Difficult to refer to things and patients How to balance information with unwanted interference It is extremely difficult to find ways of notifying people of relevant events in appropriate ways and at appropriate times. If assemblies of technologies are automatically established, the professionals need to receive information about whether connections and services have been activated successfully, whether they are (still) working, and which elements belong together 20 In this Future Laboratory we focused on pre-hospital work, but Police, Firefighters, hospitals, etc. In several of the scenes it was discussed that the new technologies can change existing work practices. Clear to all that use of new technologies is not only about the technology, but also about ways of working with the technologies. Situational awareness is clearly crucial. Overview Situation awareness is, in important ways, created and communicated through action on the scene. Available to remote colleagues (en route, in hospitals, in command centers) without creating extra overhead for staff on the scene
