3 De IJkdijk: De samenhang tussen tienduizenden kilometers dijkproblemen, next generation internet, GRID en business. De IJkdijk (zie Wikipedia) is een initatief om een tachtigtal dijken, voor zien van sensoren en actuatoren zodanig over te belasten dat ze bezwijken. Op basis van wat hiermee geleerd wordt kan men grootschalige ICT sensor en actuator netwerken bouwen die letterlijk de dijk steviger maken zonder een gram extra klei. Er is echter nogal veel dijk die ook nog eens veel data per meter genereren. Nederland heeft zo'n km dijk en in het buitenland moet er nog een miljoen worden gebouwd. Heel waarschijnlijk is dat seismische sensoren worden toegepast wat op die schalen tot enorme datastromen leidt. Prof. Robert Meijer van de Universiteit van Amsterdam en TNO legt uit aan hand van de IJkdijk case uit hoe met moderne inzichten op het gebied van Internet, applicatie-integratie en Grid dergelijke grootschalige ICT systemen kunnen worden gebouwd. Ook besteed hij aandacht aan de financiering van dergelijke intelligente infrastructuren en hoe dat, in combinatie met ICT nieuwe business oplevert. Tenslotte wordt betoogd hoe intelligente infrastructuren (dijken, snelwegen) in combinatie met goede financieringstechnieken voor tweede wereld landen een economische enabler kunnen zijn. Prof. Dr. R.J. Meijer, UvA / TNO ICT Robert Johan Meijer (1959) werkt bij TNO ICT en als hoogleraar bij het Informatica Instituut van de Universiteit van Amsterdam (UvA). Zijn leerstoel is Telematica, in het bijzonder sensornetwerken. Hij is voorzitter van de VoIP special interest group van de Nederlandse Internet Society. 26 Flood protection is an international issue requiring innovations in sensors and ICT Floodings Protective infrastructures (dikes) fail usually because of very local defects. Over dimensioning (larger) of dikes is too costly or does not help. Promising more safety at less costs, dikes with sensors and actuators are a solution to most frequently occurring problems. Operating sensor dikes requires a deep scientific understanding of dikes. Every meter of dike must be monitored, understood and controlled, a dike is as strong as it weakest section.. The immense length of dikes (Netherlands: km), their stretched dimensions and presence in remote area s and, consequently, the enormous amount of sensor data require new ICT. The immense cost of dikes (new 2000 euro/m, changes euro/m) justifies innovations. Robert Meijer, TNO ICT Groningen

27 The IJkdijk* consortium has developed a facility (IJkdijk) on the Dutch-German border to test dikes and their sensor and actuator systems. It will exist for 7 years. The IJkdijk will facilitate the deeper understanding of dike behavior, related key performance indicators, sensors and actuators *IJkdijk = calibration dike The IJkdijk consortium (R&D and water board and government agencies) operate the facility. The consortium has developed a research plan with emphasis on geophysics and hydraulics. Over fifty (Netherlands, Germany, France) companies intent to participate in R&D
