REPORT In addition to encouraging design excellence in all projects at UBC s Vancouver campus, the AUDP also advises Campus and Community Planning on related policy development, such as the Design Guidelines for the Vancouver Campus Plan. The AUDP plays a very important role in assessing the sustainability performance of building projects, using building rating systems such as Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) or Residential Environmental Assessment Program (REAP) as the framework. The AUDP encourages higher sustainability performance and identifies specific opportunities for proponents to consider. The Panel also benefits significantly from the perspectives provided by staff and faculty members who enhance the Panel s capacity to comment on social and financial sustainability aspects of projects. The current membership of the AUDP is as follows: Richard Henriquez (AIBC Nominee) (term expires May 2012) Brian Wakelin (AIBC Nominee) (term expires May 2012) Lisa Castle, UBC Staff (term expires January 2013) Michael Green, Architect (AIBC Nominee) (term expires May 2013) Steve Jedreicich, Development Industry (term expires September 2013) Margot Long, Landscape Architect (BCSLA Nominee) (term expires December 2013) Dr. Maged Senbel, UBC Faculty (term expires February 2014) Richard Henriquez and Brian Wakelin were appointed in May 2008 as two of three professional architects on the Panel. As they have served two terms, they are no longer eligible to serve on the Panel. Following are the candidates Campus and Community Planning recommends from the list supported by the Architectural Institute of British Columbia (AIBC). Mr. Martin Nielsen, MAIBC, MRAIC, P.ENG., LEED AP Mr. Nielsen is a registered architect and engineer with over 20 years of Architectural practice and experience and is a LEED Accredited Professional. He has extensive experience in housing, academic and mixed-use developments which are the type of projects at UBC in the next few years. His work showcases the seamless integration of innovative, sustainable and efficient design with architectural clarity and quality. Mr. Nielsen s extensive experience leading green projects ensures sustainable initiatives are at the forefront of all of his design solutions. Mr. Mark Ostry, MAIBC AAA SAA FRAIC Mr. Ostry has also been practicing architecture for over 20 years. His work with Acton Ostry Architects demonstrates a continuing commitment to the making of architecture that responds thoughtfully to local culture, topography, climate and to lessons learned from buildings inherited from the past. His work spans educational, community and cultural, religious, residential and urban mixed-use buildings. Projects have ranged from new construction on undeveloped sites, to rehabilitation, renovation and conversion of buildings in urban settings and for established postsecondary institutions. Brief biographies for Martin Nielsen and Mark Ostry are provided in Attachment 2.

5 Attachment 2 Brief Biographies Martin Nielsen, MAIBC, MRAIC, P.Eng., LEED AP Principal Busby, Perkins + Will A registered architect and engineer, Martin has over two decades of experience in architectural design. His portfolio of completed work showcases the seamless integration of innovative, sustainable and efficient design with architectural clarity and quality. Extensive experience leading green projects ensures that sustainable initiatives are at the forefront of all of his design solutions. Along with his focus on residential, mixed-use design and development, Martin is currently leading a range of projects types which include high performance campus buildings such as the recently completed, LEED Platinum Centre for Interactive Research on Sustainability (CIRS) and Modern Green residential development in UBC s Wesbrook Neighbourhood (currently under construction) to master planning and urban design for sustainable communities and cities such as Plan Abu Dhabi 2030 which directs future development for the Emirate. Martin is actively involved in research, teaching and community engagement, in addition to currently serving on the Squamish Nation Design Panel following three years of service on the Vancouver Urban Design Panel. Mark Ostry MAIBC AAA SAA FRAIC Principal Acton Ostry Architects Mark Ostry has been practicing architecture for over 20 years. He received a Bachelor of Environmental Design Studies in 1984 and a Bachelor of Architecture in 1985 from the Technical University of Nova Scotia. Established in 1992, the work of Acton Ostry Architects demonstrates a continuing commitment to the making of architecture that responds thoughtfully to local culture, topography, climate and to lessons learned from buildings inherited from the past. The work spans educational, community and cultural, religious, residential and urban mixed-use buildings. Projects have ranged from new construction on undeveloped sites, to rehabilitation, renovation and conversion of buildings in urban settings and for established post-secondary institutions. Work at the University of British Columbia includes the recently completed LEED Gold Biological Sciences Complex, the Hillel House Student Centre, the multi-phase redevelopment of the Sauder School Business, renewal of the LEED Gold Friedman Building for the School of Audiology and Speech Sciences and the School of Rehabilitation Sciences, and the Meekison Arts Student Centre. The firm has received over 50 civic, provincial and national design awards including: 8 Lieutenant Governor of British Columbia Awards; 4 Canadian Architect Awards of Excellence; a Best in Canada Award; and, a national Outside the Box Award for exceptional, innovative design.

6 His practice is a leader in sustainable design with several public projects having received LEED Gold certification. In 2010, his firm was the first ever to receive multiple awards in the same year from the national Sustainable Architecture and Building awards program for the redevelopment of the Sauder School of Business at UBC and the mixed-use Alhambra + Garage + Cordage + Grand + Terminus buildings located in historic Gastown. In addition, his practice has received 8 City of Vancouver Heritage Awards and 6 Canadian and American Wood Council Awards, including the prestigious Ron Thom Award. In 2007, the Canadian Wood Council presented Acton Ostry Architects with a special Firm Leadership Award in recognition of their innovative use of wood. In addition to the profession, Mark has a strong commitment to community. He has served on the City of Vancouver Urban Design Panel and the City of Vancouver Artist Live / Work Studio Implementation Committee. In 2011, he was appointed to the Squamish Nation Advisory Design Panel. He is a member of the Canada Green Building Council and has served as an advisor to the Canada Council and the City of Vancouver Cultural Planning Department. Mark has served on the Boards of several Vancouver cultural institutions, including The Stanley Theatre Society, Vancouver TheaterSports, and is presently Chair of the Pacific Cinematheque. In 2008, Mark was elected to the College of Fellows of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.
