Installation Workflow Core software The core software platform provides a reporting soltion bilt on a scalable architectre of distribted backends, frontends, collectors and databases. Installing the core software platform establishes the fondation for the site, providing common capabilities, fnctions and ser interfaces available to all site sers, regardless of the specific installed SoltionPacks. Yo can install site software as a Virtal Appliance in a VMWare environment or sing a standard binary installation: The Virtal Appliance installation enables yo to deploy the site software as an appliance in a spported VMWare environment. Alternatively, yo can perform a standard, or binary, installation of the site software on physical or virtal servers. Spported pdate paths EMC only spports the application of specific pdates in seqence > > Storage Resorce Management Site SoltionPacks The site incldes a nmber of storage infrastrctre-related SoltionPacks to spport EMC and third-party storage infrastrctre components. 10 Virtal Appliance Installation Virtal Appliance installation overview Yo can deploy the site in a spported VMWare environment. A virtal appliance (vapp) is a software soltion composed of one or more virtal soltions that is packaged by an appliance vendor and can be deployed, managed, and maintained as a nit. Storage Resorce Management Site vapps are distribted sing Open Virtalization Format (OVF) files. Depending on yor environment reqirements, two types of OVF installations are available to install the site core software: Note For VM vapp installation option One VM vapp installation option For VM vapp installation - Distribtes core software components across for VMs (Frontend, Primary Backend, Additional Backend, and Collector). The VMs in this installation are pre-configred to commnicate with each other, offering an ot-ofthe-box configration that can fnction in smaller environments. Yo can frther scale and extend the environment by installing additional VMs sing the one VM vapp installation. One VM vapp installation - Has the potential to install any of the core software components in a single VM. This can be sed to install a single, consolidated VM with all components for evalation prposes, or to add additional Backend and Collector appliances to extend or scale the environment created sing the for VM vapp installation. The vapp deployment shold be sed only for new installations. If yo need to pgrade an existing installation, se the standard binary setp script or exectable to migrate to a newer release. The vapp deployment spport was not available prior to the Storage Resorce Management Site 3.0 release. Use this procedre to install the for VM vapp. The for VM vapp installation deploys for VMs which are pre-configred to commnicate with each other: Frontend VM - This VM hosts the web portal and centralized management applications and controls licensing. Primary Backend VM - This VM hosts the primary database, back end components, load balancer/arbiter and modles which spport capacity, alerting and topology. Yo can have only one instance of the Primary Backend in yor environment. Additional Backend VM - This VM incldes back end components and timeseries databases and is sed to scale ot back end processing. Collector VM - This VM hosts collectors sed to discover, collect and process data from spported hosts, switches and storage devices. Use this option to install a vapp which incldes all core software components or to extend a for VM vapp environment to inclde additional vapps. This installation option provides a specific appliance as a single virtal machine which can then be manally added to yor base installation to extend yor environment: 10 EMC Storage Resorce Management Site Installation and Configration Gide
Virtal Appliance Installation Frontend VM - This appliance hosts the web portal and centralized management applications and controls licensing. Primary Backend VM - This VM hosts the primary database, back end components, load balancer/arbiter and modles which spport capacity, alerting and topology. Yo can have only one instance of the Primary Backend in yor environment. Additional Backend VM - This VM incldes back end components and timeseries databases. Collector VM - This VM hosts collectors sed to discover, collect and process data from spported hosts, switches and storage devices. This VM incldes the same modles as the Minimal Installation and adds generic Collector modles (Generic- SNMP, Generic-RSC) In addition, the one VM vapp installation provides the following specialized installation options: All-In-One Appliance - This vapp is intended for a small site or to condct proof of concept activities with the site software and installs Frontend, Backend and Collector core software components on a single virtal machine. Minimal Installation - Installs the minimal base software components reqired for the core software, enabling a cstom installation options on a single virtal machine. Considerations for hostname and IP address on page 32 Considerations for SNIA libraries and HBA drivers on page 32 Yo have to follow these gidelines to ensre a sccessfl host discovery and data collection. The host names are in Domain Name Server (DNS) format with flly qalified domain name (FQDN). IP addresses are registered with the appropriate domain name servers and resolve for a reverse DNS lookp. Hostname labels can contain only the lowercase ASCII letters a throgh z, the digits 0 throgh 9, and the hyphen (-). No other symbols, pnctation characters, or white spaces are permitted. Note Considerations for SNIA libraries and HBA drivers If SRM Site enconters a host name with an nderscore, sers may be prevented from logging in. In order to discover SNIA-qalified HBA-related information for all the host platforms yo shold ensre the right versions of SNIA library, drivers and firmware are in place. Ensre yo have EMC-spported host bs adapter (HBA) drivers and firmware. Ensre that SNMP Read-Only is activated on the EMC Isilon array. Identify the information reqired to spport data collection before installing the SoltionPack for EMC VMAX and perform the necessary pre-configration. SRM Site reqires EMC Soltions Enabler to collect array topology details for VMAX arrays; optionally SRM Site reqires UniSphere for VMAX and/or the EMC SMI-S Provider to collect array performance details. If both EMC Soltions Enabler and EMC SMI-S Provider are present, they mst be on the same host. There are two spported scenarios for topology collection. The Soltions Enabler proxy scenario is recommended becase the Collector and the Soltions Enabler are not competing for host resorces. Soltions Enabler proxy scenario (recommended) In this scenario, yo install Soltions Enabler on the SRM Site Collector host designated to collect data from VMAX. 50 EMC Storage Resorce Management Site Installation and Configration Gide
Infrastrctre Preparation for Discovery and Data Collection Yo configre Soltions Enabler to commnicate over TCP/IP with a Soltions Enabler instance on the remote SYMAPI server (Array Provider). Yo shold add two additional gatekeepers to the host that is already monitoring the Symmetrix array. To spport collection sing the SYMAPI Server, two additional gatekeepers will be reqired per array on the remote Soltions Enabler host. For example, if there are already six gatekeepers per array then yo will need to add two more for a total of eight gatekeepers per array. Local Soltions Enabler scenario The Local Soltions Enabler scenario spports topology collection for VMAX arrays sing a VMAX Soltion Pack Collector which has been installed on the same host as the Soltion Enabler software. Implementing the Local Soltions Enabler scenario incldes the advantages of redced network calls and a more secre configration. However, the Collector software will reqire additional Soltions Enabler host CPU and memory resorces. The Soltions Enabler (proxy) scenario is the preferred configration since the Collector and Soltions Enabler are not competing for host resorces. The Local Soltions Enabler scenario reqires that each VMAX array have at least 6 Gatekeeper Devices be created on the host. Note If the Soltions Enabler was installed to a Virtal Machine then Raw Device Mappings mst sed when creating the Gatekeeper Devices If the Local Soltions Enabler is desired and if VMAX LUN Performance details are reqired, then it is recommended that yo install the EMC SMI-S Provider kit on yor host since it incldes the reqired Soltions Enabler components. This is in contrast to installing a standalone Soltions Enabler kit and then installing the SMI-S Provider over it which cold potentially case incompatibility isses if the Soltions Enabler versions are different. Refer to EMC SMI-S Provider docmentation for installation details. Soltions Enabler proxy scenario The Soltions Enabler proxy scenario spports resorce discovery and data collection for EMC VMAX. In this scenario, no SRM Site software is installed on the SYMAPI server. Instead, a client host and server host proxy relationship is configred. This is the preferred configration for monitoring VMAX arrays. Client host - Yo install Soltions Enabler on the SRM Site Collector host designated to collect data from VMAX. The client host has no direct connectivity to the array. Server host - Soltions Enabler already exists on the SYMAPI server with connectivity and gatekeeper access to the array. The client host is then configred for proxy commnicate with the server host over TCP/IP (port 2707, which is the defalt). In this scenario, map two additional gatekeeper devices to yor SYMAPI server. Preparing EMC VMAX 51
Infrastrctre Preparation for Discovery and Data Collection Configring Soltions Enabler proxy spport Configre spport for the Soltions Enabler proxy scenario. Before yo begin Install a spported version of EMC Soltions Enabler on the SRM Site Collector host. Refer to the EMC Storage Resorce Management Site Spport Matrix for spported versions sed with SRM Site. In a proxy configration, yo mst maintain the same Soltions Enabler family version. A mixed 32-bit and 64-bit Soltion Enabler is spported in a proxy configration. Map two additional gatekeeper devices for SRM Site and present them to yor SYMAPI server. Ensre the storsrvd daemon is rnning on the Server host. Yo can confirm this by issing the stordaemon list command on the Server host. This procedre is applicable for Soltions Enabler or the Soltions Enabler installed with the EMC SMI-S Provider. Procedre 1. On the client host on which yo installed Soltions Enabler, navigate to the netcnfg file. On Linx, the file is located at: /var/symapi/config/netcnfg. On Windows the file is located at:..\program Files\EMC\SYMAPI\config 2. Edit the file to add the remote host to which Soltions Enabler will commnicate. Add a line similar to to the last line in the following example: # This is a sample config -- where is a valid IP address. # # Please se this format for yor host. # # # # SYMAPI_SERVER - TCPIP node # # SYMAPI_SECURE - TCPIP node SECURE # SYMAPI_SERVER - TCPIP hostname IP-address 2707 NONSECURE Select NONSECURE when the server side is configred for NONSECURE, or ANY on the deamons_options file in the SECURITY_LEVEL section. 3. Set the following System environment variables on the client host: SYMCLI_CONNECT=SYMAPI_SERVER SYMCLI_CONNECT_TYPE=REMOTE Option Description Windows The environment variables are shown with the set command at the command prompt. To establish persistent variables se Compter > Properties > Advanced system settings. Select Environment Variables > New to create the two variables as shown above. 52 EMC Storage Resorce Management Site Installation and Configration Gide
Infrastrctre Preparation for Discovery and Data Collection Option Linx Description Use the env command to show the environment variables. On the SYMAPI server host, ensre that the SERVER license key is registered by reviewing the symapi\config\symapi_licenses.dat file. If it is not there, se the symlmf tility to add the license key. Yo can also control the Soltions Enabler licenses from the array. Verifying the Soltions Enabler proxy configration Verify proxy configration sccess and, if necessary, identify and resolve any configration isses. Procedre Local Soltions Enabler scenario 1. From the SYMAPI server host, typesympd list to display a list of devices that are visible to the host. Note the reslts. 2. On the client host, type sympd list. If the reslts match, the configration is complete. If the command issed from the client retrns a message sch as no devices fond, contine to the next step. 3. To isolate the isse: a. Verify that the same command works on the host with the FC connection to the Symmetrix array. b. Verify that the environment variables for Soltions Enabler are set sing the symcli -def command. c. Verify that the netcfg file has been edited sing the symcfg -services list command.command. d. Verify the arrays yo intend to monitor sing the symcfg list command. e. Verify that two additional gatekeepers are provisioned from each Symmetrix array sing the sympd list command. The local Soltions Enabler scenario spports resorce discovery and data collection for EMC VMAX. In this scenario, yo install only the SRM Site Collector software directly on the existing SYMAPI Soltions Enabler server. The Soltions Enabler proxy scenario is the preferred configration. Implementing this scenario incldes the advantages of redced network calls and a more secre configration. However, the Collector software installed on the SYMAPI server will reqire processing cycles from that server. This scenario reqires two additional gatekeeper devices be mapped to yor Collector host.
