You will become proficient in the processes involved in forensic imaging, finding evidence and uncovering hidden information used by computer security companies and law enforcement agencies. We will use case studies from current computer criminal course cases through the entire process of computer crime investigation, from crime scene to courtroom testimony. This process includes Incident response, Investigation, computer hardware, crime scene processing, evidence collection, digital evidence analysis, Digital Forensic report writing, and courtroom testimony. Brief justification of how/why the course qualifies as innovative (i.e., essential knowledge and skills not covered in any other state-approved course) (150 words or less): There is no current course that covers all of the elements required to adequately provide the requisite materials to properly expose the students to the changing field of computer forensics. 4 Description of the specific student needs this course is designed to meet: The field of Computer Forensics and data security is a new and fast growing segment of the technology arena. With the recently mandated digitalization of all health records and the continued expansion of relatively inexpensive broadband access computer crime is a growing threat. The need for properly trained practitioners in this field has become a necessary requirement for a proactive response to the continuous challenges in digital technology. Major resources and instructional materials to be used in the course: Computer Lab, computer components needed for labs and practicums. Computer forensic analysis software, date recovery software, data acquisition software, hard drive imaging hardware.
