1 Union County College Faculty Curriculum Committee New Course Proposal Form To all faculty members seeking to introduce a new course proposal to the Curriculum Committee, please make sure to complete the attached form accurately before submitting your proposal. For all new courses, please submit an electronic copy of your proposal to the Curriculum Committee Chair, with a copy to the New Course/New Program Subcommittee Chair. All new course proposals must follow these guidelines completely. If these guidelines are not followed completely, your new course proposal may be delayed in the acceptance process. Please refer to the Curriculum Committee website for all deadlines and meeting dates. Please Note: a) These guidelines for submitting new courses were taken from the Union County College Curriculum Committee By-laws found on the committee s web page, and have been changed into checklist form for easy use. b) This form must be submitted to the New Course/New Program Subcommittee chairperson with your new course proposal. c) All courses that will be offered in a Distance Learning format (Online or Blended) must be reviewed by the Academic Technology Committee and approved by the Curriculum Committee. This applies to new courses that will be offered in the Distance Learning format for the first time. The proposal for all Distance Learning Courses should be reviewed by the Academic Technology Committee (ATC) prior to being submitted to the Curriculum Committee (but reviews may be concurrent if necessary). The ATC will only review the proposal as it relates to the technology required to deliver the course. Belmonte COURSE CODE: CIS 1XX TITLE: Cyber Crime and Computer Forensics PROGRAM: Computer Science CATALOG COURSE DESCRIPTION (including prerequisites, lecture/lab hours, credit hours): This course introduces students to the laws pertaining to cyberspace and computer investigations. During the semester students will learn about the procedures and tools used in computer investigations and analysis. They will learn how to conduct a high-tech investigation, acquire digital evidence, and report findings. Students will also learn about ethics. Prerequisites: ENG 089 and ENG lecture hours. 3 credit hours INSTRUCTIONAL METHOD (S): Lecture Lab Clinical Studio Online Blended This course is submitted as a Pilot course. 6 UNION COUNTY COLLEGE COURSE SYLLABUS COURSE NUMBER & NAME: LECTURE/LAB HOURS CIS 1xx Cyber Crime and Computer Forensics 3 Lecture Hours CREDITS 3 PREREQUISITES: None COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course introduces students to the laws pertaining to cyberspace and computer investigations. During the semester students will learn about the procedures and tools used in computer investigations and analysis. They will learn how to conduct a high-tech investigation, acquire digital evidence, and report findings. Students will also learn about ethics. COURSE OBJECTIVES/OUTCOMES: By the end of this course, the student will be able to: 1. Describe how to prepare for computer investigations and explain the difference between law enforcement agency and corporate investigations. 2. Identify the tasks in investigating crimes and violations. 3. Appraise contingency planning for data acquisitions and how to validate data acquisitions. 4. Explain the guidelines for processing law enforcement crime scenes and how to secure a computer incident or crime scene. 5. Analyze procedures for corporate high-tech investigations and explain requirements for data recovery 6. Summarize the roles of ethics and codes with forensics and the testimony of experts. 7 An essential element of this course includes information literacy. Information Literacy is the evaluation and assessment of integrated information. Students will be able to locate, discern, and effectively use information to solve issues and/or problems.
