Featured Spring 2013 Programs for International Students The programs below develop the most critical job search skills needed during the Spring semester. Many international students gain a greater sense of urgency to focus on their job search this semester, with many not having had the bandwidth to do so in the Fall. During this short period, they need to quickly get up to speed with not only developing but also selling their stories. Networking, which is a critical job search path for international students, must be leveraged. Should they win an internship or offer, understanding cultural on- the- job expectations is critical for converting an internship to a full time offer, and for achieving success in a full time position. These programs are offered in a series or as standalone programs. Each program is available as an in- person lecture and workshop ( ), a live webinar ( ) or an online video ( ). StorySelling Just Do It: Overcoming Your Fear of American Networking Converting an Internship Into a Full Time Offer STORYSELLING StorySelling is about developing the most compelling stories and knowing how to communicate it most effectively in the setting of networking and interviewing. International students are bright and technically competent. However, for many, their interpersonal storytelling is the weakest link to getting a job with an American company. For many non- American cultures, telling a complimentary story about oneself is eschewed in society. Yet it is precisely one s effective storyselling that is critical to job search success. This workshop will help students integrate the key ingredients for job search communications success: a well- built story that can be orally and persuasively communicated in the American context. Students will walk away with: Knowing the difference between possessing a 30- second pitch and selling their story Understand how to maximize their StorySelling capabilities with key selling points, proof- stories that integrates into their Core Story Developing a proactive mindset in interviews and networking meetings by owning their best- self attributes For workshops, students will need to do pre- work and to facilitator prior to attending.

JUST DO IT: OVERCOMING YOUR FEAR OF AMERICAN NETWORKING American networking can be terrifying to international students due to the need to reach out to strangers and sell oneself. Many students do not know appropriate verbiage, protocols and in- the- moment behaviors that are acceptable in American networking. Thus, while most understand the concept of networking, students report having little idea how to actually do networking. As a result, most students report not knowing the actual steps or the right words to use when they engage in networking. Students will walk away with: Knowing socially acceptable norms that allow for networking behaviors in the US Understanding how to: - Ask for a network meeting - What to write and say when seeking a contact - Navigate a networking conversation, from the meet & greet to ending - Follow- up, immediately and over time The workshop is highly interactive so students are strongly urged to send to the facilitator their target company job description and Core Story. CONVERTING AN INTERNSHIP INTO A FULL TIME OFFER have mentioned negative feedback from employers. Many international students For example, napping after lunch, which is an accepted practice in certain parts of the world, has caused some students to lose their jobs. Moreover, international students have the opportunity to learn about the importance of socializing and promoting oneself during the internship, in order to get an extended or full- time offer a fact many American students are well aware of. Students will walk away with: Knowing the fundamental objectives of an internship Understanding the importance of gaining clarity on project deliverables Becoming aware of how to create a positive impression with American employers Understanding how to manage their time between content work and interpersonal communications Learning how to gain feedback from managers and re- directing self as needed

Programs for Staff UNDERSTANDING THE STUDENT BEHIND THE 'MASK' A CHALLENGE FOR ADVISORS Staff members, from career services to student services, have encountered Asian students who have been more challenging to support. Staff members have told us that the Asian student population can be particularly non- responsive, masked and hard to read or understand. Some do not exhibit a sense of self as they do not are many cultural factors that affect such kinds of student behavior, especially a their true questions and needs. Our Program, "Understanding the Student Behind the 'Mask' A Challenge for Advisors", provides staff with information and background about Chinese / Asian cultural factors that affect classroom, academic and interpersonal behaviors. Many have found it extremely helpful to understand the whys behind some befuddling behaviors. Staff members have reported that after attending our sessions, they have gained greater understanding, which has helped them initiate new strategies to address the needs of these students. TRAIN THE TRAINER: TEACHING JOB SEARCH STORYTELLING AND NETWORKING THROUGH THE LENS OF INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Student feedback from our networking workshops indicates a sense of relief, learning that his/her inability to do networking is a cultural issue. Many students have faulted themselves with not doing networking, though they understand its importance. American networking comes from a paradigm that does not exist in some cultures such as reaching beyond social circles to ask for favors, crossing hierarchical levels when contacting older alumni or selling one s capabilities through storytelling. Many students, especially those from hierarchical cultures like Asia, need to know the A to Z of networking, such as the content and phases of a 45 minute networking conversation. For example, we ve created the EASE system that breaks down the networking conversation, from the meet and greet to saying goodbye. Our Train the Trainer program focuses on the following areas: Cultural assumptions that impede job search storytelling and networking A step- by- step structure to teach American job search storytelling Appropriate steps and permissible language for networking The phases of an American networking conversations

Advisors will walk away with: Greater understanding of the cultural assumptions that cause international students to resist storytelling and networking A structure to teach storytelling to students who have never told a story about themselves Knowing critical language constructs to teach students, so they become more Learning the EASE system which provides students with a roadmap to navigate networking conversations Programs for Faculty BRIDGING THE CULTURAL DIVIDE IN THE CLASSROOM Faculty members in universities across the country are facing classrooms of students who do not respond in predictable ways. Among the most commonly observed, unanticipated behaviors: Students from Asia and non- Anglo cultures tend to not speak up in class or offer opinions They seem to lack critical thinking skills necessary for case study analysis They appear to plagiarize and cheat on exams best to address these situations. The missing link is the awareness of many cultural collective perspective that preclude some students from expressing themselves in class and engaging at a higher level. This program will focus on how best to address these situations. Our Program, Bridging the Cultural Divide in the Classroom, provides faculty with information and background about Chinese / Asian cultural factors that affect classroom, academic and interpersonal behaviors. Many have found it extremely helpful to understand the whys behind some befuddling behaviors. Faculty members have reported that after attending our sessions, they have gained greater understanding, which has helped them initiate new strategies to address the needs of these students.

Programs for International and Domestic Student Collaboration COLLABORATING ACROSS CULTURES American and international students tell us the internationalization of the student body is challenging for them, whether socializing with each other or as team members in a class. A pathway to break through this logjam is to help students understand each other, through the lens of culture. For most students, American from another culture. Left to their own, they are challenged to know how to bridge these differences towards a point of commonality. But once they are given the opportunity to dialogue and understand, they gain skills to more readily interact and engage. Our program Collaborating Across Cultures provides students with a framework with which to work with peers from different cultures. Through case study different approaches, while uncomfortable and sometimes frustrating, are equally right. With such an understanding, students become open to dialoguing about teamwork preferences and thus, tend to create a more collaborative and respectful environment.

We look forward to hearing from you! If you are interested in booking a program or if you have any questions, please contact us at: extension 1 info@dreambridgepartners.com We wish much success to you and your international students.
