8 Out-of-State Public and Private Colleges & Universities v Over 3,000 campuses v Emphasis and eligibility: Varies by campus v Types: v Liberal arts colleges literature, language, science, math, history, social sciences v Cooperative or co-op hands-on learning, learn by doing via internships for pre-professional programs v Specialty schools e.g. engineering, business, art, technical/vocational, music conservatories v Research universities resources focused on graduate education and research

9 Selecting Colleges v Very Important! The most selective schools can NEVER be considered target colleges If your student s college list consists primarily of reach schools, this will be a very stressful process and the outcome could be disappointing If the student really looks for schools that fit him/her well (e.g. individual needs, values, interests), this should not be a problem v Useful tool to estimate admission chance and tracking chart available in Naviance: From your homepage choose Document Library>College-related documents> Determining Likely Target Reach List Colleges

What kind of environment fits? v Fast paced or laid back? v Conserva4ve, liberal, religious v Diversity: Ethnic, gender, economic, viewpoints v Campus pride and school spirit v Small (<2000); Medium (<12,000); Large v Residen4al vs. Commuter v Loca4on: Urban, suburban, rural v Distance from home v Climate v Weekend ac4vi4es v Public transporta4on vs. car v Core curriculum vs. no general educa4on requirements

13 Teacher Letter of Recommendation More focused view of student in the classroom Primarily an academic report Many private colleges ask for 2 letters, some want just 1 Prefer letters from junior year core academic teachers Good idea to ask in Spring of Junior year

15 How Parents Can Help v Let students drive the process * Help organize materials and deadlines, Naviance v Plan College Visits * Visit colleges with a wide range of selectivity! * 5 excused absences this semester and next year v Discuss parameters for the college search * Expectations, geographic location, and financial/travel restrictions
