Welcome! Kathie Laurence, Asst. Principal Susan Shultz, Guidance Counselor Class of 2016 Sandra Cernobori, College Advisor Alice Erber, College Advisor

Your Junior & The College Process Susan Shultz Class of 2016 Guidance Counselor Time of transition Can be a time of high anxiety for both students and parents Balance Ultimately, your child is going to end up in a great school There are so many colleges in this country (& even outside the U.S.!)

Post High School Options Sandra Cernobori College Advisor Community College Four Year College or University Vocational/Specialty School 13 th Year Programs (aka Post Grad Yr) Gap Year Military Work (Career Month) Travel

College & Career Center Philosophy We are here to guide students through the search process * To Listen * Direct students to resources * Advise them how to prepare for eligibility * Support with application and essay review * Ask questions to help them make choices Best preparation is self-assessment. Students should own the process to develop confidence. Explore!

CA Public Universities v California Community Colleges v Education: theoretical and applied v Emphasis: career/vocational programs, general education, certificate programs, associate degree, and transfer preparation v California State University v Education: theoretical and applied v Emphasis: teacher preparation, career employment/pre professional skills, and preparation for graduate school v University of California v Education: theoretical v Emphasis: research and preparation for graduate school For information about eligibility, please refer to The Viking Guide

Out-of-State Public and Private Colleges & Universities v Over 3,000 campuses v Emphasis and eligibility: Varies by campus v Types: v Liberal arts colleges literature, language, science, math, history, social sciences v Cooperative or co-op hands-on learning, learn by doing via internships for pre-professional programs v Specialty schools e.g. engineering, business, art, technical/vocational, music conservatories v Research universities resources focused on graduate education and research

Selecting Colleges v Very Important! The most selective schools can NEVER be considered target colleges If your student s college list consists primarily of reach schools, this will be a very stressful process and the outcome could be disappointing If the student really looks for schools that fit him/her well (e.g. individual needs, values, interests), this should not be a problem v Useful tool to estimate admission chance and tracking chart available in Naviance: From your homepage choose Document Library>College-related documents> Determining Likely Target Reach List Colleges

How will you evaluate colleges? What kind of environment fits? v Fast paced or laid back? v Conserva4ve, liberal, religious v Diversity: Ethnic, gender, economic, viewpoints v Campus pride and school spirit v Small (<2000); Medium (<12,000); Large v Residen4al vs. Commuter v Loca4on: Urban, suburban, rural v Distance from home v Climate v Weekend ac4vi4es v Public transporta4on vs. car v Core curriculum vs. no general educa4on requirements

How are college applicants evaluated? Alice Erber College Advisor v Course Requirements v GPA and course selection v SAT/ACT scores, if applicable v Personal Essays, if applicable v Teacher Recommendations, if applicable v Teacher Advisor Letter (aka School Report), if applicable v Extra-curricular activities

TA Letter of Recommendation (aka the Counselor Letter) v Required by private and most out-of-state colleges v Written by the Teacher Advisor v Broad overview of student v Requires input from many sources

Teacher Letter of Recommendation More focused view of student in the classroom Primarily an academic report Many private colleges ask for 2 letters, some want just 1 Prefer letters from junior year core academic teachers Good idea to ask in Spring of Junior year

Don t let your student be a stealth applicant! Sandra Cernobori Know about demonstrated interest

How Parents Can Help v Let students drive the process * Help organize materials and deadlines, Naviance v Plan College Visits * Visit colleges with a wide range of selectivity! * 5 excused absences this semester and next year v Discuss parameters for the college search * Expectations, geographic location, and financial/travel restrictions

More for Parents.. v Be informed * Resources: Viking Guide, Naviance, Paly Link, C&CC Facebook Page, Project Safety Net v Be supportive * Stressful and emotional time; pressure v Be Realistic * Have a balanced list! The Viking Guide is posted on paly.net in Guidance section under Juniors, and in College and Career section under College Planning

What s next for your student? v Attend advisories v Sign up for the SAT/ACT v Complete the Post High School Planning Survey on Naviance to make an appointment in the C&CC v Research and visit colleges (websites, guidebooks, and college fairs) v Viking Guide v Find and pursue interests (community service, job, career exploration survey in Naviance etc ) v Keep life balanced time for self, activities, and sleep v Focus on academics most important part of all applications v ENJOY!

Important Dates & Info v Senior Profiles due April 30 th v NACAC National College Fair, Saturday, May 2nd, at the Cow Palace. v WACAC College Fair, Thursday, May 7 th, at Mission College. v Post High School Planning Info
