Lynbrook High School Guidance Highly Selective College Planning Guide
College Planning Guide As parents, we all want what is best for our children. We want them to be successful, attend a good college and have a wonderful life. But it is important to look at what factors make a college a good college for your child. We would like to try to help you understand the competitive nature of the college admissions process so that we can work together to help your child submit applications that will be of the highest caliber. The successful college application process is one that culminates with the students finding an appropriate academic and social fit.
College Planning Guide The TEAM approach: Student must be part of the process plan, research, evaluate individual strengths and weaknesses Parent- encourage be realistic (use Naviance as a tool) School Counselor guide assist with planning and navigating the process from start to finish.
Factors to Consider Know the facts: An increase in the number of applications results in lower acceptance rates UPenn-9.9% (Class of 2018), 12.1% (2017) 29% (2005) Cornell-14% (2018), 15.2% (2017), 31% (2005) Northwestern-12.9% (2018), 13.9% (2017) 33% (2005) An increase in the different types of decision plans (E/D, E/DII, E/A, Single Choice E/A, Priority) creates additional stress and the need to strategize when applying In 2014, Duke accepted 50% of their class E/D UPenn accepted 50% of their class E/D E/D = Early Decision and is a legally binding agreement; E/A = Early Action and is not legally binding
Factors to Consider Sometimes there are reasons behind what appears to be the arbitrary nature of highly selective college admissions Legacy Dr. William Fitzsimmons, the Dean of Admissions at Harvard, recently reported that the college s acceptance rate for legacy was around 30% - which is more than 5 times the regular admissions rate of approximately 5.9% Recruited Athletes - Almost 1/3 of the students accepted E/D at small liberal arts schools are recruited athletes Colleges need to build a class global diversity, geographic desirability special talent (music, art, athletics) are all factors considered in the admissions process.
Impressive Candidate vs. Admitted Student There is no magic formula. College admissions officials at very selective colleges all agree that gaining admission takes more than having stellar academic credentials. Matching the academic profile of admitted students is the first step but it is not enough. At the highly selective schools, valedictorians and students with perfect scores are often rejected. Intellectual curiosity, great grades and high scores are simply NOT enough to stand out in a competitive application pool.
Impressive Candidate vs. Admitted Student Admitted students match the academic profile and fall into one or more of these categories: Students who can bring something special to the school Students with exceptional promise Students who demonstrate fit Students who are legacy
Understanding the Academic Profile Colleges review applicants using a holistic approach: Use Naviance as a resource A computer based program that allows LHS students and parents to research schools and see the profile of accepted students from Lynbrook and the rest of the world Objective Criteria (transcript, GPA, SAT/ACT, trend in grades) Subjective Criteria (essay, letters of recommendation, activities, talent)
Subjective Criteria How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? DEVELOP A PLAN AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE The college application should be clear, consistent and logical. It should portray the story of you and highlight reasons why you are a good candidate. This takes advance planning and research. Activities - Parents and students often ask: What activity looks good? What should I do this summer to stand out? What do the colleges want to see?
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? Demonstrate genuine interest in clubs, activities and community service pursuits There needs to be a connection and good fit between a students interests, goals and abilities Quality over quantity find, develop and pursue your passion Try to find one or two activities that you can pursue enthusiastically which will showcase some combination of character, leadership, determination, intellectual curiosity, genuine interest, creativity, maturity, independence and ability. Good article about March Application Madness:
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? If your interest is in business, it should be reflected in your academic profile and in the contributions you made in your activities Do you have strong math skills? Have you enrolled in any of the business electives available? Are you Treasurer of a club? Do you handle budgets? Do you solicit contributions for fundraisers? Do you participate and/or compete in Business Clubs and competitions? Do you have a stock portfolio? Have you ever had a part-time job or internship? Have you started your own business?
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? Your love of learning should be reflected in the educational opportunities you take advantage of to enhance or supplement your education by maximizing your curriculum and taking advantage of opportunities outside of Lynbrook HS. Excellent grades are simply not enough and do not demonstrate passion in a specific discipline. Earning an A+ in science does not mean you are passionate about science.
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? Letters of Recommendation many colleges limit the number of letters that can be included with an application Teachers (2 letters), counselor (1 letter), additionally a coach, job mentor, internship advisor, activities coordinator if appropriate (1-2 letters; not to exceed 5 total letters) Good letters highlight student strengths, growth, commitment, talents Quality vs. Quantity (less is more) Students need to: Provide recommenders with brag sheets Pay attention to specific college requirements Be sure to follow directions
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? The Essay: Common Application one essay is sent to all of the colleges. Extremely important must reflect the student s voice and be insightful and thought-provoking. Visit: Some colleges also require additional supplements Tips for writing essays: Tufts: College Board: Fiske: Real College Essays That Work, 3 rd edition
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? Demonstrate to the admissions counselor that you are a good fit research is critical! For example, if you are looking to major in Business and Math: Connect your high school courses, such as Calculus and Virtual Enterprise, Courses in computers, or Accounting with the curriculum for the college you are considering. Are you an entrepreneur? Have you started your own business enterprise? Have you established yourself as a leader in clubs and activities? How have you demonstrated your passion through internships and summer enrichment programs? Thoroughly research the programs you are applying to and the curriculum you will be taking within your major. Many selective schools require that you apply to a specific school within the college.
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? Be careful! Do not just cut and paste from the college website. Understand the college programs you are considering sending an application Northwestern The Kellogg School for Management is not for undergraduates. Undergrads can get certificate from the school. Many options for undergrads interested in business and math: MENU Program (Math with broad applications ) 4-year BA/MA Cornell Applied Economics and Mgt (AEM) is in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS); School of Hotel Administration, Policy Analysis & Mgt is in Human Ecology; School of Industrial and Labor Relations, Economics major are in the College of Arts & Sciences.
How Do You Make Yourself Stand Out? Demonstrate your interest, passion and fit Visit, visit, visit! Correspond appropriately with admissions counselors Do your homework - investigate academic programs, special opportunities, current research being done by professors, extra-curricular opportunities Make sure that you sign up to receive information Read the blogs, join virtual chats Be prepared, prompt and professional for the admissions interview All parts of the application are important. Take your time in completing all requirements.
How to Help Your Child Stand Out Help them develop a plan. Encourage them to become self-advocates. Help them direct or channel their strengths. Instill a sense of confidence in them. Be proud of their accomplishments and their efforts. Have realistic expectations. Have a range of school to consider. Listen to them and value their perspective. Discuss realistic family financial parameters for attending college.
Highly Selective Statistics What is a Highly Selective School? There are over 3,500 colleges in the US and about 50 of these are categorized as highly selective. These colleges will have an admissions rate of 25% or lower. Highly Selective Admissions Statistics: d4bf596577eb_story.html College Rankings:
