1 Objectives for the evening: Set context, learn from guest speakers, understand immediate and long-term steps.

2 Jesuit is a college preparatory high school. Attending Jesuit prepares the student to be a successful and productive college student. By virtue of being enrolled at Jesuit, students are engaged from day one in college preparation. Colleges desire Jesuit students for academic preparation, commitment to higher learning, sense of personal mission and calling, and a willingness to consider and attend colleges both regionally and nationally. College admission is a match to be made, not a prize to be won. A match implies the discovery of a mutual compatibility. The student recognizes a genuine fit and the university recognizes the student as a contributor to that campuses academic and social environment. As much as possible, this is a student process. Higher education is an investment. Regardless of a families ability

3 to contribute toward their student's education, students should recognize the significant investment that is being made in their future. A sense of gratitude is certainly worthy and appropriate. There are thousands of colleges throughout the country and the world uniquely equipped to help your learn and grow. How do you know where to go? What university or college will be just right for you as you pursue your life vocation? We believe that it all starts with personal discernment, reflection and a good bit of planning.

4 The college planning process is a unique partnership of students, high school teachers and counselors, parents, friends, and colleges. 1. An active participant in the college planning process - Research, asking questions, keeping notes, showing interest, checking your 2. Open to exploring colleges that you may not be aware? 3. Organized and vigilant - Deadlines, passwords, early recommendation requests 4. Understand the importance of connecting with your JHS college advisor. You may have many outside influencers in your life, but understand the powerful resources that are available from the high school advisor. 5. Show gratitude Buy a box of thank you notes!

5 1. Support student by listening to fears and concerns and helping them make well-informed, balanced decisions. 2. Stress the importance of a college fit rather than choosing a college because of the name or reputation. 3. Be honest with the student regarding what you can and cannot afford to pay for college. 4. Be patient with your student.

10 On January 30, juniors will in their Jesuit a Family Connection registration code. The also provided the link to the Jesuit Family Connection site. You will want to bookmark this link for future reference. After entering the registration code, students will enter their address and password of choice. The and password will be their entry into the website. Families will share and password for collective entry into the website. One of the key elements of Family Connection is the address that the student and parent uses to sign in. This address is also a main conduit for communication between the family and the college advisor. This address does not have to be the student s Jesuit student address. During registration you can designate an address that you check and use frequently. Two questionnaires are electronically accessible on the student s personalized Family Connection webpage. Career Cluster Finder - The Cluster Finder will help students learn what

11 career clusters may be a good match based on activities that interest you, personal qualities that you have and subjects that you enjoy studying in school. The College Planning Questionnaire for Juniors seeks information on student work experience, activities and awards, factors that counselors should be aware of in assessing post-secondary options, self-assessment of personal strengths and areas for improvement. It also has 4-5 questions specifically directed to the parent. Paper versions are available if separate versions are appropriate for your family.
