2 Welcome to DBS Postgraduate School Dublin Business School (DBS) is located in the heart of Dublin City Centre. This provides postgraduate students with the opportunity to study in a professional environment whilst enjoying the cultural and social elements that Dublin City offers. The college is aware that the needs of postgraduate students differ to that of undergraduate students. As a result, postgraduate students can enjoy access to a purpose designed postgraduate facility located in our Dame Street premises. Within this premises there is a postgraduate library designed solely to aid postgraduate students with their studies. Many other facilities are available to postgraduate students and will be disclosed in this following handbook.

3 Dublin Business School Campus DBS is a city centre campus. The main building is situated on Aungier Street, behind St Stephens Green Shopping Centre. Please refer to the Map below for the location of our other main buildings. Buses servicing Aungier Street directly are 16, 9A, 65, 65B, 69, 68A, 83, 83A or 122. All Bus, DART, Luas and Rail routes service the city centre with terminals close to the College. We are delighted that you are joining us in academic year 2014/15. The objective of DBS is to create graduates with the knowledge, skills and confidence to meet the challenges of today s rapidly changing workplace in Ireland and abroad. We offer a broad spectrum of post graduate business programmes covering a range of subject areas in Business, Management Practice, Marketing, International Accounting &Finance, Information & Library Management. All programmes delivered in DBS are designed to provide you with an appropriate grounding and understanding of these business subjects. We know that you have your own career aspirations and that you may wish to specialize in your own preferred area of study and our programmes are designed to allow you that option. 7 Programme Structure Master of Business Administration (MBA) Programme Aims for Learners To facilitate an advanced understanding of general management theoretical and conceptual frameworks in an international context To develop the ability to use these frameworks for evaluating business policy and practice To provide an insight into key business management issues, trends and solutions To integrate issues and principles from a variety of sources and to be in a position to synthesise these elements to diagnose existing problems and formulate solutions To develop transferable interpersonal, communication and leadership skills through group interaction, case discussions and presentations To encourage learners to take responsibility for their own learning through independent research and project work To provide learners with a practical basis to support on-going personal development and learning throughout their study and future careers To provide diagnostic tools and theoretical understanding which will allow learners assess and evaluate the impact of business decisions within the wider society N.B. Each of the six streams available teaches learners more about the chosen industry they wish to pursue in their future career. For example, if you choose to study Masters of Business Administration (HRM) it would focus on the management of human resource. By choosing the elective modules Performance and Reward Management and Strategies for HR you will adopt a strategic approach emphasising alignment between HRM and organisational strategy. Programme Content The Masters of Business Administration (MBA) programme (with or without streams) has the following content in stages 1 and 2: Stage 1 - consists of core modules and elective modules. Core modules are an essential component of your course and must be completed by all students. They are mandatory. Your elective modules are subjects that you choose to study to accompany your core modules. Students who choose the MBA general option can choose any two modules to accompany their core modules (above). Students who choose a specific stream must follow the subjects attributed to that stream. To progress to stage 2 of your MBA Programme you must complete all core modules and elective modules respectively. Once all are complete you will move into your dissertation phase. Within this phase you are given 12 weeks to complete a body of work. You will be assigned a supervisor who will oversee and guide you through your dissertation. Once Stage 1 and 2 are completed, you have succeeded and passed your MBA programme.

10 Overview of Assessment For this programme there are four objectives in mind for the assessment component. Assessment Objectives To produce graduates with an advanced level of applied and theoretical knowledge and competencies in the field of Business Administration To produce graduates who have a significant research capability and demonstrate a high level of personal and professional development equal with management positions in business To develop graduates who have demonstrated the achievement of the learning outcomes of this programme To evaluate how successfully the graduate has achieved those learning outcomes by the way of an award classified on the basis of criterion referenced assessment of the stated programme learning outcomes Assessment Methods Each module is assessed differently. Some modules require exams while others are based on continuous assessments throughout the year. Pieces of course works and exams are weighted differently depending on the requirement of a specific module. For example, an exam may be worth 70% of your overall mark whilst the continuous assessment is worth 30% or vice versa. Please see the below table to see how your modules are weighted. The examination grades to be included in the average result are those obtained at the candidate s first attempt. Where a student has exhausted all attempts in a referred module they may choose to register to take another module from the approved course schedule in order to gain the required credits for progression or completion. This is only permitted when the failed module is an optional module and not core to the programme.

The Registrar s and Exams Office are here to help you. The primary mission of the Registrar s Office is to facilitate the academic experience of all students enrolled in the College, from the time of registration to graduation. We are responsible for keeping all student records (past and present) and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of such records. Contact details: businessschool@dbs.ie Examinations Office The Examinations Office team is responsible for all exams which take place in Dublin Business School. We are located in the Castle House campus. We are also responsible for the release of exam timetables, examination centres and release of exam results. We also provide for those students who require special provision during exams. The end of year exams usually occurs during the last week of April and the first two weeks of May. Examinations are delivered in the day time for both full time and part time students. 14 DBS Student Services and Facilities DBS Library Service Introduction DBS Library comprises the Undergraduate Library at Aungier Street and the Postgraduate/Law Library at Dame Street. The Undergraduate Library is located on the second floor of the Aungier Street building. The Postgraduate/Law Library is located on the third floor of the Dame Street building, (a door code 5371, is required to access this Library). What can I access from the Library? The Library collection encompasses the arts, business and law. It comprises: 66,000 books, listed and searchable on on Koha, the Library s online catalogue,

16 35 print journals 56,000 e-journals an extensive portfolio of online databases more than 1,900 DVDs more than 1,550 e-books Note, that the Library Catalogue, the Library s e-book collection, EBSCO databases and the JSTOR database can also be searched on handheld devices such as iphones. 3. How do I become a member of the Library? As a registered student, you are automatically a member of the Library. Your DBS student card is also your Library card. 4. How do I borrow books? Each Library has self-issue stations where you can borrow, renew and return books yourself with your student card. 5. How many library items can I borrow and for how long? Undergraduate students can borrow up to 6 items and can renew up to 12 times with the exception of 3-day loan books. Postgraduate students can borrow up to 10 items and can renew them up to 12 times with the exception of 3-day loan books. Note that if another student has reserved an item presently on your account, you cannot renew it. 6. Can I renew books online? Your mydbs account When starting in DBS, you are allocated a college account (aka mydbs account in the format your student number@mydbs.ie e.g @mydbs.ie) We strongly recommend that you to activate this account as the Library staff and college staff will contact you at this address. What library resources are available if I have a disability? If you have a disability, you are welcome to contact the Deputy Librarian Jane Buggle (jane.buggle@dbs.ie) who will carry out a needs assessment with you to ensure that the appropriate supports are in place for you to access library information. For example visually impaired students can avail of magnification software and audio functionality on e-books. 11. How do I contact the Library? Each Library site has a dedicated information point where staff can assist you with your enquiries. You can also contact Library staff by phone, or via the Library s instant messaging service called DBS Ask a Librarian which is available on the Library website. DBS Ask a Librarian enables you to chat live with Library staff via the Library Website. 19 12. How Can I learn more about using the Library? Library Classes: DBS Library employs a dedicated Information Skills Librarian, who provides students with Library tours and inductions. She also runs a variety of classes on how to evaluate and use information ethically; essay writing, avoiding plagiarism and referencing. Please consult the Library Website (Library Services tab) for further information. Library Guides/Handbooks: guides on how to use various Library resources as well as guides on essay writing, referencing, avoiding plagiarism, conducting a literature review, etc. are available on the Library website and in hardcopy in the Library. The Library also produces its own student handbook as well as a quick guide to Library Resources. These are also available on the Library Website. Information Points: Each library has an Information point that is manned by professional staff who are there to help you get the most from the Library resources and facilities. Please feel free to approach the desk with any Library query big or small. Alternatively you can phone, or instant message the Library. 23 Internships are regularly promoted via the Career Development office. Graduate employers attend on-campus events both during the milk-round application period and year-round. Where a credit bearing work placement programme is embedded in a programme, work placements have been secured with companies across a number of business areas including finance, marketing, legal, IT, HR, business development, customer service etc. Students on programmes that do not currently have a work placement module can also liaise with the Careers Advisor to seek advice and guidance regarding internships and graduate employment. For more information careerdevelopment@dbs.ie Don t miss out on events, news and vacancy alerts - Scan the QR codes below to connect with us on Facebook and Careers Careers Student Services Student Welfare The Student Welfare and Education Officer provides information to students about a range of concerns including; mental well-being, crisis pregnancy, sexual health awareness, suicide intervention and non-academic issues. There are also links to a number of support services both locally and nationally and refers students to these organisations. Please Talk Please Talk is a national mental health awareness campaign, which urges students to understand that talking is a sign of strength, not of weakness. And that if they experience problems while at college, there are people they can talk to. At the centre of the campaign is the PLEASE TALK website, which provides a list of support services that are available to

24 students at their college or university. DBS has a page on the PLEASE TALK website, which lists the support services available to our students. Disabilities and Learning Support Dublin Business School s Disabilities Service aims to provide support for students with disabilities and to assist the achievement of educational goals. Students with physical disabilities, learning difficulties, mental health issues, on-going illnesses or short term illness or injury should register with the Disabilities Service to ensure they receive the appropriate assistance during their studies. Students should contact the Careers Service, to register with the Disabilities Service or to discuss any issues relating to disabilities. The Disabilities Support Office is located within the Careers Service in the Aungier Street building. Students with disabilities may wish to avail of: Assistive technology Academic support In class support Special arrangements for exams Counselling Assisted access to facilities Further details on disabilities support can be obtained from the Disabilities Office. disabilitiessupport@dbs.ie. In order to receive academic support and/or make a request for reasonable accommodation, students must register with the DBS Learning Support and Disabilities service. Support services include the following: Special arrangements for exam and assessment are available including extra time, use of a laptop, reader or scribe and a spelling & grammar waiver. A weekly drop in academic support session is available for all students who have registered for Disabilities Support All staff who will be teaching students with disabilities are notified at the start of the academic year and given information sheets on the specific disability and suggestions on how they might adapt their teaching methods to be inclusive. Guides to using assistive technology in the Library are available within the Library both in print and on the Library Website. The Library offers magnification and text to speech

A dedicated information literacy librarian is also available to provide additional one to one tuition to students with disabilities on how to search and evaluate information, essay writing and referencing The Disabilities Website allows prospective and current students to get an understanding of the supports available as a student of DBS and how to access them. It also highlights the role of the Disabilities Coordinator as first point of contact for any queries. The Education and Welfare Officer is located in the Student Services Office on the ground floor in the Aungier St. campus building and is available to meet with students on a drop-in basis from 3 5pm each day. International Students The International Student Services Officer is based on the ground floor in Aungier Street campus. Relevant letters are issued for international students as well as providing a number of other services including; facilitating home stays, and planning international events. The International Student Services Office is open during office hours (8:45-5:15 Mon.-Fri) for new students and existing students. Letters must be requested online via the student intranet ( At least 5 working days must be allowed for the processing of letters. 26 International Relations Officer The International Relations Officer liaises with students on various issues relating to international programmes including queries regarding accommodation. Please contact Maria Rubio for further information Accommodation Dublin Business School prides itself on the central campus locations and easy access to public transport. However, sourcing accommodation in Dublin can be a difficult task. The Student Services Team provides advice and support to students in relation to accommodation search. There is an Accommodation Notice-board on the ground floor of Aungier Street. Here you will find notices regarding apartments and houses for rent, room shares, sublet notices and house shares. WE advise students to also post DBS Accommodation Connect notices whereby they advertise what they are searching for. Many students connect this way and rent apartments together under the one lease agreement. The Student Services team also produces an annual DBS Accommodation Guide. The guide includes information on the various accommodation options available to students in Dublin s City Centre. 27 Events and Entertainment During the year you will find many events organised by Student Services. Fresher s Week takes place at the beginning of the academic year. 28 Sports, Clubs and Societies Sports Clubs and Societies Joining a sports club or society is a great way to improve your soft skills and enhance your employability. Active engagement in Sports Clubs and Societies is not only looked upon favourably on your CV by employers, it is also a great way to make friends and improve your fitness and well-being. During Fresher s Week there will be a Sign-Up Day where you will have the opportunity to meet the members of the various sports and societies and you will be able to join. Each Club and Society will be organising events during the year from parties to trips away to competitions and students are encouraged to keep an eye on our noticeboards and student intranet for more information! Our Annual Sports & Societies Awards & Formal Ball Night takes place during the last week in March. This is one of the highlights of the college calendar. We celebrate the great success of our students throughout the year. To mark the College s commitment to student societies DBS is now a full member of the Board of Irish College Societies (BICS) which qualifies two successful societies to compete in the annual BICS Awards. 29 Registration for all sports clubs is free of charge. Training sessions and competitions are organised so that they do not clash with students timetables. The Sports and Societies Development Officer represents DBS at CUSAI (Colleges and Universities Sports Association of Ireland) events and forums. for more information. Robert is located on the 4th floor in the Castle House campus. Computer Services The Computer Services department offers support to the student body in College IT related issues. , internet, online storage space, Moodle (intranet for notes etc) and course related software are all provided for students at no extra charge. Students can contact the Computer Services Department via the on-line form on the web link below, in person on the fourth floor of the Georges St building or by telephone on Visit the Computer Services website at: Facilities The Facilities Department is responsible for managing all building and maintenance work in the institution, along with providing and maintaining all furniture and equipment, including but not limited to: Teaching Aids Desks and Seating Electricity and Heating The department attempts to cater, and provide adequate resources, for the many different learning and teaching requirements of the institution. The department is also responsible for ensuring that all current Irish Health and Safety Legislation is strictly adhered to. Communication with students is facilitated by a series of notice boards each of which is dedicated to particular student groups. All students are made aware of which notice board relates to their programme and are actively encouraged to check it regularly. Student addresses and telephone numbers are recorded in the College database and, where urgent last minute changes occur, students are contacted by these methods. Feedback from students is gathered via the student surveys carried out towards the end of first term. As well as inviting comment on programme and module related matters, the questionnaires specifically provide an opportunity for students to convey their opinions as to the quality of the

30 physical teaching and learning environment. Issues raised are addressed as a matter of priority. On-going refurbishment and redecoration programmes are in place to ensure that the physical environment remains conducive to the learning and studying process. IT Laboratories & Lecture Theatres There are 11 IT Labs, incorporating open access and specialised multi-media facilities available. DBS utilises over 50 lecture rooms across five buildings each equipped with the latest AV equipment. Study Facilities There are dedicated study-rooms made available especially around examination time and both libraries provide dedicated study rooms on an appointment basis. Common Rooms Common rooms include student break out areas, student canteen/lounge and prayer-room. Facilities for Disabled Students The main buildings on Aungier Street and George s Street are wheel-chair accessible and specific issues can be addressed to provide the same level of service and access as able-bodied students.
