Summer institute, one of our busiest times of the year, went incredibly well as we welcomed students from cohort 11 to ODU. We also hosted our first guest scholar this year, Dr. Stephen Katsinas, a prominent leader in community college research. WE RE ON THE WEB!
2 Summer Institute Guest Scholar Dr. Stephen Katsinas Stephen Katsinas is the Director of the Education Policy Center at the University of Alabama. Dr. Katsinas earned a Master's Degree in History from the University of Illinois and a Ph.D. in Higher Education from Southern Illinois University. Dr. Katsinas teaches courses on the History of American Higher Education, the Community College, the Role of the community college in Economic and Community Development, and Academic Cultures and Learning. Dr. Katsinas is the author of numerous peerreviewed publications and policy reports on the American community college. Prior to joining the faculty at the University of Alabama, Dr. Katsinas was the Buchholz Chair of Higher Education and the Director of the Bill J. Priest Center for Community College Education at the University of North Texas. Gretchen Warren (Cohort 9) successfully defended her dissertation proposal titled Community College Students with Psychological Disorders and Online Learning. Dr. Kathy Hensley (Cohort 5) successfully defended her dissertation titled, Student Retention in BSN Programs. Dr. Colin Ferguson (Cohort 2) successfully defended his dissertation titled, A Study of Dual Grading Outcomes at a Small Community College. Publications Sorey, K.C. (Cohort 1) & DeMarte, D.T. (2013). Assessment of general education: Adapting the AAC&U value rubrics. Published in Peer Review Spring 2013: Models for Student Success Developing a Community College Student Roadmap Presentations/Speaking Engagements Dr. Kellie Sorey (Cohort 1) presented in April, 2013 at the Association of American Colleges and Universities-hosted Student Success and Quality Agenda Conference in Miami, FL on Assessment of Student Learning in General Education. Dr. Martha Walker (Cohort 1) conducted a workshop in July at the 2013 Community Development Society meeting in Charleston, SC on Community Engagement: Successes in Virginia Community. Dr. Ellen Davenport (Cohort 6) was the keynote speaker at the Tips and Trends for the Community College Administrator conference in Asheville, NC sponsored by Lenoir-Rhyne University s Center for Graduate Studies. Davenport s presentation was entitled, What Do Legislators Want from Community Colleges? Jim Maccariella (Cohort 11) presented in August 2013 at the Engaging Learners in the 21st Century Conference, at Mercer County College, in West Windsor New Jersey. His presentation was entitled "Motivating Engineering Students to Succeed using Innovative Concepts from Industry." Gloria Savage-Early (Cohort 8, pictured left with Counselor Education doctoral student Jessican Loyd-Hazlett) presented at The College of William and Mary's School of Education first symposium. Gloria Savage-Early (Cohort 8) was the guest speaker for Iota Phi Lambda Eastern Regional Sorority Breakfast. Dr. Kellie Sorey (Cohort 1) served as a panelist at the Institutional Policy Forum, sponsored by the Institute for Higher Education Policy (IHEP) held in Washington, D.C. Dr. Sorey was invited as a panelist by Clifford Adelman, IHEP Senior Associate. She spoke on the topic of Degree Audits: Promising routes and Practices. Mike Gilley (Cohort 8) and Dr. Elllen Davenport (Cohort 6) presented at the "Tips and Trends for Community College Administrators" Conference which was sponsored by Lenior-Rhyne University's Graduate Center in Asheville, NC. 6 Accomplishments/Awards Dr. Kellie Sorey (Cohort 1) was named the Associate Vice President for Academic Effectiveness at Tidewater Community College in Norfolk, VA. Shashuna Gray (Cohort 10) was named Dean of the Arts and Sciences Division at Germanna Community College in Fredericksburg, VA. Patrick Tompkins (Cohort 9) was named Dean of Communications at Thomas Nelson Community College in Hampton, VA. Lorrie Coe-Meade (Cohort 9) was awarded the Virginia Community College System Chancellor s Faculty Fellowship for the academic year. The Fellowship provides one year of leave paid at three-fourths salary, a tuition award of $7,500 provided by the VCCS, and an additional $5,000 in tuition support provided by ODU. Lorrie plans to utilize the Fellowship for the research and dissertation phase of doctoral study. Lorrie Coe-Meade (Cohort 9) was recently promoted to Professor of Nursing at Wytheville Community College in Wytheville, VA. Keith Harkins (Cohort 7) was recently named Board President of the YMCA of Central Virginia, Board Member of Lynchburg Regional Chamber of Commerce; appointed to the Board of Trustees for the Center for Rural Virginia and named to the Region 2000 Workforce Investment Board. Guia Caliwagan (Cohort 9) was recently appointed to the Virginia Board of Nursing. She also recently returned from a trip to the Philippines, her home country. Other News/Announcements Scott Kemp (Cohort 10) was quoted as a Subject Matter Expert in an article on the career aspirations of today s college student. 7 CCL Office News Welcome new faculty member Dr. Josh Pretlow! Dr. Pretlow earned a PhD in Higher Education with a minor in Research, Statistics, and Evaluation from the University of Virginia in As a graduate student and postdoctoral researcher, Josh worked for the National Center for Postsecondary Research, an IES funded center focused on rigorously measuring the effectiveness of programs designed to help students make the transition to college and master the basic skills needed to advance to a degree. His dissertation was an experimental evaluation of a Summer Bridge Program designed to help recent high school graduates successfully transition to community colleges. His current research continues to include the transition to higher education and includes a focus on dual enrollment and education policy. He is beginning his first year as an Assistant Professor of Higher Education and Community College Leadership this fall. Welcome new staff member Jennifer Giblin! Jennifer Giblin, former Graduate Assistant for the Higher Education program has recently transitioned to the CCL office as the new CCL Office Manager. She is beginning her fourth year in the Higher Education PhD program, is a member of the Safe Space committee and Global Monarch Club; the treasurer of Golden Key Honor Society; Doctoral Student At-Large for the Higher Education Student Association; a conversation partner for the ELC; and volunteers for ODU Admissions, Housing and Residence Life, Student Engagement and Enrollment Services, and many other offices. Jennifer is very knowledgeable of all things ODU and looks forward to working with the CCL students and alumni! She can be reached at the main office line or through at [email protected].
