5 FOREWORD The National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) is pleased to present The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems This manual is intended to provide best industry practices and technical information concerning the design, materials and installation of roof systems. This manual is best used in conjunction with the other currently applicable editions of The NRCA Roofing Manual, including The NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep-slope Roof Systems, The NRCA Roofing Manual: Architectural Metal Flashing, Condensation Control and Reroofing, and The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems. The NRCA Roofing Manual presents time-tested, best-practice guidelines for roofing buildings and other enclosed structures; the information has been collected by NRCA from knowledgeable, practicing roofing contractors located throughout the U.S. The information in the manual reflects the consensus of the roofing contractors consulted; the manual does not purport to include all practices, designs or applications. The best practice, design or application for a specific job may vary according to climatic conditions and geographic location. Exclusion of certain practices from the manual does not mean such practices are unsatisfactory or inappropriate, and some geographic areas may employ area practices not included in the manual that are better or more appropriate than those included in the manual. Accordingly, the manual only should be used as a guideline and should not replace personal knowledge and experience. The science and art of roofing buildings and other enclosed structures continues to experience change spurred largely by technological innovations and new product developments. New and ongoing research constantly expands the industry s knowledge of roof systems and their design, materials and installation. This edition of The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 is an up-to-date, authoritative technical reference concerning the design, materials and installation of quality, long-lasting roof systems. In addition, NRCA intends to periodically update the manual as significant new information about roof systems and their design, materials and installation becomes available. Users of this manual seeking additional information or wishing to submit recommendations for revisions or additions to future editions of the manual should contact: The NRCA Roofing Manual Technical Services Section National Roofing Contractors Association W. Higgins Road, Suite 600 Rosemont, IL (847) Fax: (847) nrca@nrca.net NRCA gratefully acknowledges all its task force and committee members who contributed their time, effort and expertise to the development of The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems NRCA s Manual Update Committee primarily was responsible for researching and analyzing the manual s topics, as well as developing the text, figures and construction details contained in the manual. 9 INTRODUCTION The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 is a continuation of a long-standing series of publications from the National Roofing Contractors Association (NRCA) intended to provide in-depth, best industry practices and technical information concerning the design, materials and installation of quality roof systems. History NRCA published its first manual, A Manual of Roofing Practice, in This was NRCA s first reference guide developed by roofing contractors to address good roofing practices. This manual was revised in 1971, 1973 and In its original and revised editions, A Manual of Roofing Practice primarily addressed roofing practices relating to built-up membrane roof systems. In 1981, the first edition of the manual, The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, was published. This edition consisted of 442 pages and contained information about built-up and steep-slope roof systems (asphalt shingles and roll roofing, clay and concrete tile, slate, and wood shingles and shakes), waterproofing systems, a limited number of construction details and reprints of NRCA s then-current technical bulletins and Handbook of Accepted Roofing Knowledge (HARK). At the time the first edition was published, single-ply membrane roof systems were just beginning to enter the U.S. roofing market and, therefore, little information regarding single-ply membrane products and roof systems was included in this edition. An updated version of the first edition of the manual was published in 1983; this updated edition was still referred to as the first edition of the manual. Changes incorporated into the 1983 version of the manual included revised built-up roofing, HARK and glossary sections, and inclusion of the new technical bulletins released since the first edition was originally published in In 1985, a reformatted, updated and expanded second edition of The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual was published. This edition consisted of 702 pages and provided detailed information about single-ply membrane and polymer-modified bitumen sheet membrane roof systems, as well as a separate section providing specifications for membrane roof systems. In 1989, the third edition of the manual was published. This edition consisted of 726 pages and contained information updated from the second edition. In 1996, the fourth edition of The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual was published and consisted of a two-volume set containing 1,858 pages. The fourth edition represented a significant change from previous editions in that a vast majority of the text was rewritten. Also, new sections were added addressing metal roof systems, spray polyurethane foam (SPF) roof systems and The NRCA Energy Manual. In 2001, the fifth edition of The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual was published. The fifth edition consisted of a four-volume set containing 1,473 pages. It contained updated information from the fourth edition; the section addressing architectural sheet metal and metal roof systems and the section addressing SPF roof systems were significantly reformatted and updated. Also, for the first time, a new section addressing reroofing considerations was included in the manual. In September 2003 and January 2006, interim updates to the fifth edition were published. These interim updates incorporated new and updated information into the lowslope roof systems, steep-slope roof systems, architectural sheet metal and metal roofing, SPF roof systems, appendix and construction details sections of the manual, which resulted in the updated fifth edition containing 1,538 pages. These past editions of the manual are available for historical reference as The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual Anthology, a CD that can be purchased from NRCA. The NRCA Roofing Manual Beginning in 2007, NRCA initiated a new manual publication process. The manual no longer was published as a The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 Introduction 9
10 complete set at one point in time. Instead, individual volumes of the manual are being published each year during a four-year period. The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems 2007 was published in January In January 2008, The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2008 was published. In January 2009, The NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep-slope Roof Systems 2009 was published. In January 2010, The NRCA Roofing Manual: Architectural Metal Flashing, Condensation Control and Reroofing 2010 was published. The combined set of these four volumes updates and supercedes The NRCA Roofing and Waterproofing Manual, Fifth Edition and is referred to as The NRCA Roofing Manual. Publication of The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems 2011 in January 2011 initiated the second four-year update cycle of The NRCA Roofing Manual. The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems 2011 is intended to update and supercede The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems This current volume, The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 is intended to update and supercede The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems At the time of publication of The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012, The NRCA Roofing Manual currently consists of the following volumes: The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems 2011 The NRCA Roofing Manual: Architectural Metal Flashing, Condensation Control and Reroofing 2010 The NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep-slope Roof Systems 2009 The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roofing Systems 2012 The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 is divided into two primary sections: Metal Panel Roof Systems and SPF Roof Systems. Each of these sections is further divided into chapters. The Metal Panel Roof Systems section is divided into chapters as follows. Chapter 1 Structural Substrates Chapter 2 Guidelines Applicable to Metal Chapter 3 Guidelines Applicable to Metal Panel Roof Systems Chapter 4 Architectural Metal Panel Roof Systems Chapter 5 Structural Metal Panel Roof Assemblies Chapter 6 Fasteners Chapter 7 Roof Accessories Chapter 8 Roof System Configurations Chapter 9 Roof Re-covering Chapter 10 Construction Details The SPF Roof Systems section is divided into chapters as follows. Chapter 1 Roof Decks Chapter 2 Other Substrates Chapter 3 Spray Polyurethane Foam Chapter 4 Protective Surfacings Chapter 5 Roof Accessories Chapter 6 Roof System Configurations Chapter 7 Roof Re-covering Chapter 8 Construction Details Where appropriate, references are provided in The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 to other NRCA publications, including The NRCA Roofing Manual: Membrane Roof Systems; The NRCA Roofing Manual: Architectural Metal Flashing, Condensation Control and Reroofing; and The NRCA Roofing Manual: Steep-slope Roof Systems. These references are provided to direct users to additional useful information beyond what is specifically contained in this manual. 10 The NRCA Roofing Manual: Metal Panel and SPF Roof Systems 2012 Introduction
