Prospective CLC Students The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) has been developed to simplify the transfer of credits among over 100 Illinois institutions. A statewide agreement among many Illinois schools (including all public universities), the IAI establishes a package of freshman- and sophomore-level general education courses that will be accepted by all the participating schools. Information about the IAI, and participating schools, is at 2
A Cost-Saving Plan for Earning a Bachelor s Degree Combining two years at the College of Lake County with two years at a four-year college or university can be a very smart plan for earning a bachelor s degree. We call the plan CLC + 2. It s an option that can literally save you tens of thousands of dollars on the cost of your degree. How CLC + 2 Works You complete your freshman and sophomore years (the first half of your bachelor s degree) at CLC and then transfer your credits to a four-year college or university where you will complete your junior and senior years and earn your bachelor s degree. CLC + 2 works because the freshman and sophomore years in a bachelor s degree program are largely focused on general education requirements, and courses meeting these requirements are very similar at most institutions four-year schools and community colleges like CLC. Earning an associate degree (in Arts, Science, Engineering, Fine Arts or Teaching) is highly recommended before transferring; research shows that students who transfer with the associate degree generally out-perform students who don t. However, students may transfer credits without earning a CLC transfer degree, making CLC a flexible transfer option. Tuition and Fee Comparison 4 Years at an Illinois Public University 2 Years at CLC + 2 Years at an Illinois Public University $53,846 $34,662 Planning: The Key to a Successful Transfer Transferring credits works well if you plan ahead and select your CLC courses based on your transfer goals. You should consult with a CLC advisor or counselor early and often in your academic career in order to maximize success in planning to transfer. Consult the website of the college or university where you would like to transfer to learn about admission and academic requirements for their particular program of study. (This is particularly important if you want to transfer outside Illinois, or to a non-iai school.) We recommend that you also contact your transfer school and speak to their college representative. Affording Transfer Thirty-seven million Americans are now carrying student loan debt, and the average student debt is $29,400. Completing half your course work toward your bachelor s degree at CLC can help you avoid or minimize loan debt. Searching for scholarships at your transfer school can also help you avoid debt. Get Information Online Visit for information on transfer and finding financial aid resources. Other important links to explore are: FastWeb: College Zone: School Soup: Scholarships.com: Scholarship Mentor: category/scholarships/illinois Private Illinois Colleges and Universities: Savings: $19,184 4 Years at a Private University 2 Years at CLC + 2 Years at a Private University Savings: $124,924 $70,202 $54,722 3
Benefits: So Many Pluses Big Savings Including CLC in your plan for earning a bachelor s degree can result in big tuition savings. On average, the CLC+ 2 plan can save you about $20,000 on tuition and fees at a public university and nearly $70,000 at a private school. Solid Educational Foundation Each transfer program includes a concentration of courses in a field of study and a core curriculum of general education courses designed to prepare you for bachelor s degree work (as well as later career success). This coursework is equivalent to the first two years of a bachelor s degree program and provides the educational foundation for success in more advanced courses in the junior and senior years. How strong are CLC s transfer programs? Students who transfer generally do as well or better than students who start their bachelor s degree at the transfer institution. In one study for example, CLC students who transferred to Northern Illinois University, Southern Illinois University and the University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign generally did better than the students who started at these schools. A Good Place to Decide on a Major Did you know that about 80 percent of entering college freshmen are undecided about a major? Or, that half of college students change their majors at least once before earning a degree? College is a time to explore new ideas, and it s also a time to explore what career field you want to pursue. CLC is an excellent place to do that exploring, not just because of our cost-friendly tuition but because we offer so many transfer program choices 52 academic areas! (See the list of majors included with this brochure; or, for more details, visit Help in Deciding Having choices is a good thing, but deciding on a major can still be confusing. Our counselors and advisors can help you identify your interests and skills and evaluate academic program options that are right for you. They can also help you match majors to career paths and earnings. For more information about advising and counseling services, visit or call (847) for an appointment to talk to a counselor or advisor. Honors Options For students who qualify, CLC s Honors options provide especially good preparation for transfer to a four-year college or university. CLC offers three Honors options the Honors Program, CLC Scholars and Phi Theta Kappa, the national community college honors society. Honors scholarships are available at CLC, and students accepted into Phi Theta Kappa are eligible to apply for many scholarship opportunities and scholarships. Participation in Honors is noted on students transcripts. This notation is viewed favorably by many four-year colleges and universities, which look for students who show they are willing to go beyond normal expectations. Recent participants in Honors have received prestigious scholarships and been accepted by institutions that have included the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Wisconsin-Madison, Lake Forest College, Georgetown University and American University. Information on how to apply for Honors options is available at Opportunity to Show Academic Success Many bright and talented students fail to discover their potential in high school. For them, college is their time to shine. If you are such a student, attending CLC is an opportunity to display your true abilities and build a transfer-worthy transcript. 4

Degrees and Courses Associate in Applied Science degree programs provide specific skills and knowledge to prepare students for immediate employment after graduating. Though these programs weren t developed for transfer, a number of their course credits may transfer to four-year schools. For example, most career A.A.S. degrees include general education courses (such as ENG 121), which are designated as transfer courses, and you may be able to transfer these courses. Additionally, CLC has developed more than 30 articulation agreements with four-year schools for career programs. Under these agreements, some credits may transfer as major requirements or as electives. If you wish to transfer credits earned as part of a career program, you should meet with a CLC counselor, advisor or faculty member as early in your studies as possible. 8 Special Partnerships Engineering Pathways to the University of Illinois The Engineering Pathways program offers qualifying CLC students guaranteed admission to the College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Students must complete a specified list of equivalent courses at CLC, maintaining a 3.3 GPA in those courses and a 3.2 cumulative GPA for all courses taken at CLC. Students must also enroll full time (12 or more semester hours). More information about Engineering Pathways is at University Center of Lake County Located on CLC s Grayslake campus, at 1200 University Center Drive, the University Center offers bachelor s and graduate degree programs from 20 colleges and universities, as well as professional development opportunities. For more information visit the University Center website at a University Center representative, contact a representative by phone at (847) or view the transfer guides available for CLC students. The DePaul Admission Partnership Program (DAPP) Students who plan to complete a bachelor s degree at DePaul by starting at the College of Lake County can join this program. Joining DAPP allows students to lock in DePaul degree requirements for three years, meet regularly with DePaul transfer admission counselors, qualify for DAPP scholarships and be eligible for DePaul s Accelerated Transfer Admission process. To participate, students must have graduated from high school and have fewer than 30 semester hours of college level credit. For more information on how to apply to DePaul and join DAPP, please visit

Transfer Planning Checklist Follow this checklist to help ensure a smooth transfer. First Semester: 3 Start meeting with an advisor or counselor and continue doing so each semester. 3 Begin considering transfer school options and academic majors. 3 Start to compare transfer schools and programs using CLC s transfer guides at transfer/info. 3 Attend a Transfer College Fair and meet with transfer school representatives visiting CLC. 3 Begin to connect with CLC faculty members. You will need letters of recommendation for admission or scholarships. Second Semester: 3 Decide on a major. 3 Review transfer guides. Choose your courses, keeping in mind the requirements of the transfer schools you are considering. Third Semester: 3 Narrow your transfer options. 3 Meet and talk to the admission representatives at the schools you are considering. 3 If you will use the IAI core curriculum for transfer, request an IAI audit from CLC s Admissions and Records Office. 3 Apply to your short list of transfer schools. 3 Visit these schools campuses to make sure they are a good fit for you. Fourth Semester: 3 Fill out a CLC Petition to Graduate in the Admissions and Records Office before the deadline date. 3 Request that your final CLC transcript be sent to your transfer school. 3 Apply for financial aid at your transfer school. 3 Consult transfer school websites. For additional information and assistance, contact CLC s Counseling, Advising and Transfer Center at (847)
How to Prepare for a Smooth Transfer To successfully transfer to a four-year institution, it s important to prepare early starting with your first semester at CLC! Our Counseling, Advising and Transfer Center offers the resources and guidance to help you achieve your transfer goals. Our staff will meet with you on a drop-in basis, however, we recommend making an appointment during non-registration periods for effective career counseling and transfer planning. How to Contact us: Grayslake Campus, Room C110: (847) Lakeshore Campus, Room N211: (847) Southlake Campus, Room V130: (847) How-to Guide for Transfer Planning Meet with an advisor or counselor before each semester to plan your schedule. They will help you: Choose courses that meet CLC degree requirements, as well as the requirements of the transfer schools you are targeting. If you are undecided about a major and/ or school, advisors and counselors will help you select courses that are likely to transfer to a four-year college or university. Create your schedule before registration begins and then register as early as possible in order to get the courses you want and the schedule that best fits your needs. Identify what you want to achieve and choose a major. But what if I m undecided? If you are undecided about your goals, make an appointment to see a counselor, who can help you identify your career and academic goals and provide transfer planning advice. It is best to schedule an appointment during non-registration periods. Counselors can help you choose a major or career. Drawing on their career development expertise and formal training, a counselor will guide you through a process of selfassessment, career research, decision-making and goalsetting. Self-assessment includes a guided exploration of values, interests, personality traits and skills. Career research includes gathering information about occupational tasks, responsibilities, required education and training, salary and job outlook and more. The results of the two processes will help you in goal setting and decision making. You can also investigate opportunities such as co-operative education, internships and volunteerism. Benefits of career counseling: 3 Find a good fit between you and a career 3 Save time and money on school 3 Experience peace of mind by having a plan 3 Engage in choosing your future 3 Explore options in a supportive environment For more information, contact the Counseling, Advising and Transfer Center in Room C110, phone (847)
Identify Your Transfer College 3 Use the CLC transfer planning website at to view helpful transfer resources and events. 3 Research the colleges that offer your major and meet other criteria you have set (size, location, cost, diversity, scholarship opportunities, housing). Check out 3 Visit school websites and visit campuses when possible. If you can t visit, view virtual tours at websites such as: 3 Attend CLC Transfer College Fairs, which are held throughout the year. You can meet with admissions representatives from dozens of accredited colleges and universities at these events. Contact your top schools and meet with admission representatives. 3 They can offer detailed transfer information and answer all your questions about their academic programs. Once you have decided on the college where you will transfer, meet with a CLC counselor. 3 Conduct in-depth transfer planning under the guidance of a CLC counselor. Again, it is best to schedule an appointment during non-registration periods. A year before you plan to transfer, apply to your top school choices. 3 Check admission application deadlines. These range from a few months to a year before you transfer. 3 Gather and submit all pieces of information required by the application process. Allow time to write necessary essays or personal statements, submit transcripts and collect letters of recommendation, etc. Prepare Financial and Housing Information 3 Complete the financial aid application (FAFSA), ideally between January 1 and March 1 each year. Visit for more information and to apply. 3 Complete scholarships and housing applications for your transfer school. Make note of deadlines and due dates. Visit college websites for scholarship information. Most have dedicated web pages with this information. For additional scholarship information visit websites such as or Visit CLC s transfer planning website for additional financial aid and scholarship information at 3 If you plan to live on campus in student housing, review your options and deadlines and apply early. Order CLC Transcripts and Plan for Graduation 3 Early in the semester you graduate, submit a CLC Petition to Graduate form to the CLC Office of Admissions and Records (available online: Check the Student Services website for petition deadlines. 3 Once accepted to a four-year college, and your final CLC grades and degree have been posted, request that your final CLC transcripts be sent to your transfer school. This step is easily overlooked, but it is critical to getting credit for all your coursework (and is sometimes needed in order to receive scholarship awards). 3 After you are accepted, attend your transfer school s orientation/registration events. Make every effort to attend. 3 Each school is different, but most schools applications are available online. Review each application, organize your material and pace yourself to meet deadlines. Meet with a CLC counselor if you need help with this process. Again, it is best to schedule an appointment during non-registration periods. 11
How to Use CLC s Online Transfer Planning Website Transfer Planning In addition to meeting regularly with a counselor, you should use the transfer resources available on the college s websites at Important links on the site include: Transfer Resources 3 Find information on the Illinois Articulation Initiative and the Transferology websites. Both pages can be accessed through a very useful website. 3 If you aren t sure which school you wish to attend after CLC, select the Illinois Articulation Initiative link. The IAI is a statewide agreement among many Illinois colleges and universities that ensures the transfer of the entire general education core. The IAI General Education Core Curriculum consists of a set of 12 to 13 courses (37-41 credits) and will be accepted as a package by participating transfer schools. 3 If you know where you want to transfer, select the Transferology link, where you will find program, course, catalog and course equivalency information for many schools that will help you plan your transfer. You can also review the specific guides for transfer listed by school name Financial Aid and Scholarship Resources Get both general and institution-specific information on financial aid and scholarships at transfer institutions. Transfer Planning Links: Transfer Guides by College. Use the A to Z index to search many popular transfer institutions and view their websites. You ll find details about transfer destination colleges and universities, including tuition, contact numbers, transfer scholarships, application deadlines and transfer course requirements. Transfer Guides by Major. Search by specific major to see which schools we have a guide outlining transfer courses. If there is not a guide, the school of interest may still have your major check out their website or contact them for details. These guides include recommended (and required) courses you should take while at CLC. Transfer Resources: Use these links to get details on: ensuring courses transfer, transfer partnerships, counselor liaisons, transfer links and financial aid and scholarship resources. Transfer Events: Access a list of Transfer College Fair dates, which are held throughout the year. At these tabletop events, you can gather printed materials and talk with admissions representatives from dozens of accredited colleges and universities. Useful Transfer Links: Find dozens of links to websites such as Transferology (formerly u.select), 12 Reasons to Stay in Illinois, Illinois State Universities At-A-Glance, Private Illinois Colleges and Universities (PICU), College Board, FastWeb and more.
