BRIEF INTRODUCTION In order to nurture taented students from sister cities of Suwon city, Ajou University and Suwon city invites high-caiber students and heps them gain professiona and systematic knowedge that wi pay a key roe in their home city s deveopment. To accompish better outputs, Ajou University and Suwon City designed AJOU-SUWON SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR MASTER S DEGREE(ASSP), which is operating master s degree courses in Ajou University in the fieds of Internationa Business, Internationa Trade, NGO, Internationa Deveopment and Cooperation. In particuar, this program is designed to significanty strengthen the reationships between Suwon City, Korea and sister cities. Students, who have been given an opportunity to see Korea s experience in poverty reduction and socio-economic deveopment, wi gain a deeper understanding of Korea and contribute to the future socia, poitica and economic ties between the two nations. II Introduction to Ajou University and Suwon City 1. Introduction to Ajou University Ajou University, estabished in 1973 under the motto of "Asia's best university for the 21st century", is a eading research university with 10 coeges in Korea. Located in Suwon, about 30km south of Seou, Ajou has 14,000 students (9,000 undergraduate, 3,500 graduate, and 1,500 in other courses). Ajou University s name bears an ambition to become the best university in Asia in the 21st century when Asia becomes the center of the word. Respect for Humans (In-gan-jon-jung) This means high sef-esteem with the respect for others. It is the first principe that Ajou pursues through its research, education, and pubic service. It teaches us to connect ourseves to our neighborhoods, nation and to the word through respect and understanding, regarding a human being not as a too, but as an utimate goa or a vaue. Seeking Truth from Fact (Si-sa-gu-si) Seeking truth from fact conveys the meaning that academic resuts shoud be usefu in practice. It is Ajou s most fundamenta phiosophy that seeking truth and academic research must be based on facts and their resuts shoud contribute to peope s wefare. One Word, One Famiy (Se-gye-i-ga) This is a spirit that emphasizes that the entire word shoud move in harmony. We must break through the sma barrier of the Korean Peninsua and advance to the word, and at the same time accept what s coming from the outside. Introduction to Suwon City 1) About Suwon City Located in the southern centra area of Gyeonggi Province (127 ongitude, 37 atitude), Suwon is one the argest sef-governed cities in the country with a popuation of over 1.2 miion and an area of km2. At the center of the city is Mount Padasan that stands 143 meters above sea eve with the magnificent Mount Gwanggyosan to the North and Mount Chibosan to the west surrounding the city and its pain to the south. The weather is mosty temperate with an average annua temperature of 13 and average precipitation of 1,370mm that typify the cimate of the centra region. With the competion of a recent road expansion project and connection with Seou's transportation system, the city aows easy access to Seou and its other sateite cities. 2) History of Suwon Suwon is an ancient city that used to be caed Suseong or Hwaseng, and has ong been known as the home of fiia piety. Reics from the Paeoithic Age found in the city s Ji-dong and ui-dong District suggest that human settement in the area began as eary as some 700,000 years ago. The first Korean Kingdom to rue the area was the Baekje Dynasty During the Era of three Kingdoms and the city s current name, Suwon, first appeared in 1271 when the area was named Suwon Dohobu under the Gorye Dynasty. 3) Suwon Hwaseong The construction of Suwon Hwaseong Fortress began in the 18 th year of King Jeonjo(1794) and was competed two years ater in It is viewed to be the greatest and most unique structure in the country s history of fortresses that was designed by Jeong Yak-yong and shows the science, art architecture of the 18 th century that combined caste-buiding techniques of both the East and West, eading to the deveopment and wide use cranes, pueys and potter s whees. The fortress is becoming a word famous tourist attraction as it was named a Star of Korean Tourism in 2012 after it was aso named one of 50 peope to visit in South Korea by CNN 8

9 III Departments and Curricuums 1. Department and Curricuum of GSIS Internationa Business Introduction Gobaization has created great chaenges to companies and government organizations in the word. Managers have to dea with diversity, integrating technoogies, internationa marketing and saes campaigns, among others, in a rapidy changing goba environment and economy. The purpose of the MBA in Internationa Business is to provide a deep understanding of goba issues faced by different types of organizations, and enabe participants to get a strong command of core business skis. NGO and Modern Society NGO Introduction The dramatic and rising importance of goba civi society is undoubtedy underway throughout the word. Non-Governmenta Organizations (NGOs) in the non-profit sector as a part of this exciting new deveopment are working with, coaborating with and/or competing with governments as we as markets as interdependence and gobaization begin to change our understanding of society and poitics. In these transformative times NGOs are often regarded as being the driving force behind goba changes in poitics, economics, socia/cutura as we as ethica goba issues. It is vita therefore to understand the connections, dynamics and reationships between state and non-state actors working in the contemporary goba poitica era. NGOs in their strategies and poicy objectives, cruciay, may even go beyond the domestic boundaries of sovereign states into the ream of goba governance. NGOs therefore represent a practica strategic part of rethinking the site and nature of poitics, power and authority in the 21 st century. Refecting upon the growing importance of NGOs and civi society, the NGO 10

11 major at AJOU GSIS seeks to deveop an understanding of domestic as we as internationa networking processes by combining theory and practice in this fied of study. For this purpose, the NGO major provides prospective students with broad categories of subjects ranging from manageria skis for NGOs, to NGO strategic cooperation with internationa organizations. Aong with two required courses (NGO Introduction and Research Methods), the NGO major offers four broad categories of casses reated to current NGO activities. They are: first, NGO and Civi Society, reated subjects incuding Socia Movements and Civic Education; second, NGO and Goba Governance, reated subjects incuding Internationa Cooperation and Internationa Organizations; third, NGO and Poicy, reated subjects incuding Pubic Poicy and Poicy Panning; and fourth, NGO and Management, reated subjects incuding Human Resource Management, Socia Marketing, and Financing. Accompanying these specific academic and theoretica aspirations, AJOU GSIS aso seeks to offer more practica opportunities reated to NGO activities in South Korea, connecting our students with a variety of internships at oca South Korean NGOs. Such practica experience wi not ony aid an increase in practica and poicy orientated knowedge about this important and exciting area of goba poitics, but wi aso provide students with an opportunity to use their academic skis and provide students with concrete empoyment opportunities in the future. Poicy Panning and Evauation Poicy Practices and NGO Internationa Deveopment and Cooperation Introduction Since this program combines internationa cooperation with deveopment, it gives students an overview and deeper understanding of essentia ideas and practices of Internationa Deveopment and Cooperation (IDC). Therefore the program provides students a topica and thoughtfu earning on the academic product of IDC. The program aso provides students with poitica, economic, socia and environmenta perspectives of IDC through a mutidiscipinary approach. Trying to incorporate objective viewpoints about governmenta aid poicies from deveoping countries in the South to deveoped countries in the North, it aims to expore a we-rounded view of deveopmenta strategies as we as actors' behavior and precise issues of internationa cooperation. The program is divided into three parts: (1) knowedge and information regarding the key motive power of IDC, Overseas Deveopment Assistance (ODA) perspectives, (2) various IDC discourse such as deveopment theories and their practica appication cases, and (3) and exporation of contemporary poitico-economic issues in the fied of IDC. 15 5. THESIS WRITING When students want to write a thesis, students shoud appy for thesis advisor during the third semester and finish writing thesis proposa, and receive 3 research credits. Normay, students finish writing thesis during the fourth semester, go through thesis defense and receive another 3 research credits. Internationa Day: On every fa festiva, we host a cuture exchange event for our students and foreign students. Approximatey 500 foreign students in Ajou University and our students participate in this event and introduce their own cuture to each other. GAZETTE: We pubish a student-oriented newsetter, Gazette, once a semester. Through Gazette, students can have some space to share their ideas on Korean cuture and internationa issues and so on. We aso send Gazette to GSIS aumni. Nubi Ajou: Nubi Ajou is the vounteering group of Korean students. Its one to one buddy program heps our students to get used to iving in Korea. During semesters, there are various activities for our students to exchange with Nubi Ajou students and other foreign students in Ajou University. OTHERS Category Contents Support for Event/Living Support for VISA/Immigration Medica Support Support for Certificates Support for Room and Board Support for Transportation During semesters, advisers and staffs support students in regarding of basic matters of iving and events. Aso, students can be heped by Nubi Ajou hepers. OIA can hep students with regard to basic information of VISA and immigration. Ajou Cinic ocated in the campus provides medicine of sight inesses for free. Students can see doctors once a week in case of need. For serious inesses, students can be treated by Ajou Foreign Cinic ocated in the campus. If students appy for Dongbu Insurance that is in the contract with Ajou University, they can have a free treatment at the nearby hospita that Ajou University has appointed. (Dongbu Insurance pays ater.) Students can issue certificates by using automatic dispenser ocated inside of Ajou Service Center. There is a staff heping foreign students with regard to certificates. We offer one room per person. The dormitory is ocated outside the campus and it takes about 10 minutes on foot. Students can cook by using the communa kitchen of the dormitory. Students can have breakfast, unch and dinner at schoo cafeterias. Schoo Cafeterias have three options of western food, four based food and Korean food. Students can have more options by using nearby restaurants. Students can use the schoo bus traveing back and forth between Ajou University and Suwon Station. During semesters, it traves every 30 minutes. Student can use the schoo bus traveing back and forth between Ajou University and Sadang, Yangjae, Kangnam, Jamsi of Seou and between Ajou University and Bundang of Gyeonggi-do. During semesters, it traves twice a day. (Morning and afternoon) Airport bus reguary circuates between a hote near the campus and Incheon Internationa Airport (it takes about 1 hour).
