2 Association of German Transport Companies (VDV) The VDV has existed in its present form since the beginning of The history of the VDV began in 1846 As a sector association the VDV represents the interests of about 600 member companies active in the fields of public passenger transport and rail freight transport. Main performance of the VDV for its members: Development of technical solutions, uniform rules and recommendations, in cooperation with the transport industry and transport science Advising and supporting parliaments, governments and other bodies at the European, Federal, State and municipal levels Exchange and cooperation between the members 2

7 Objectives and tasks of the technical committees Technical Rules State of the art To describe technical and operational requirements and processes as well as to harmonise these requirements with the supervisory authorities (formerly regulations) To realise national and international requirements To influence national and European technical regulation and standardisation To describe technical and operational requirements and processes in VDV Recommendations and to adapt them continuously to the state of the art To realise national and international requirements To influence national and European technical regulation and standardisation Tendering To generate competition via joint open requirements (VDV Recommendations) To harmonise the technical and operational requiremnts with the manufacturers Information ofvdv members To prepare topical technical and operational information to members (VDV Reports) To arrange events informing about the current technical and political development To provide education and training 7
8 Example: Structure of the Committee on Bus Technology Committee on Bus Technology Preparation of sector-wide standards for optimal line-service bus technology in consideration of technical, ecological, operational and economic aspects Subjects: Motor vehicle technology, development and standardisation Conventional and alternative vehicle drives as well as conventional and alternative kinds of fuel Electric mobility and its infrastructure (incl. hybrid, battery, hydrogen and trolleybus technology) Life-cycle costing and economic efficiency Automated diagnostic procedures Registration and evaluation of current vehicle defects ( Central Reporting System ) Vehicle technology of guided bus systems German Road Traffic Licensing Regulations and the equivalent international regulations Subcommittee on Vehicle Drives Subcommittee on Quality and Design Subcommittee on Defects 8
9 Work result and realisation of the work of the Subcommittee on Defects The Subcommittee on Defects prepares information about defects of buses of the VDV member companies. This information is collected, summed up and passed on to the vehicle manufacturers. The reports on defects are handed over to the bus manufacturers (EvoBus, MAN and Solaris) by vehicle godparents six weeks before the half-yearly meeting for their opinion. 9

11 Requirements for buses - VDV 230 High degree of standardisation in technical descriptions (e.g. VDV driver s workplace) Demography passengers get older, which requires variable passenger compartments: prams, wheelchairs, bikes etc. No barriers boarding, ticketing Higher quality: as regards punctuality (reliability of the technology), information etc. Cost effectiveness (TCO) purchase price, maintenance, consumption etc. Lower consumption (light weight construction, cogeneration of power and heat, hybrid, electrical auxiliary equipment, increase in on-board power supply to 48 V (reduction of losses and generators etc.)) Online diagnosis can be integrated into the workshop administration Coordination between operators and industry Less noise 11
