3 Traffic Signal Priorities and Passenger Information (HELMI) The HELMI system: is based on wireless communication between bus, traffic signals and central system (radio modems) bus and tram priorities at traffic signals real time passenger information The HELMI system covers all (10) tram lines and 13 central bus lines. HELMI system has major effects as well on travel times as operating costs strategic project

4 HELMI Base station antenna GPSsatellite The system helps to reduce departures (number of buses/trams needed). Vehicles don t have to wait for green light at crossings. This cuts operating costs. Real time displays show waiting time for the next bus/tram. From summer 2006 the displays will also show traffic disturbance information. Real time passenger information is also provided in Internet and in mobile phone (My Departures).

6 Mobile ticket (SMS) Benefits for the customers Easy to use customers are used to send SMS Passengers don t need to find a ticket sales outlet No cash needed (The price of a ticket is included in the phone operators bill) Makes traveling faster Benefits for HKL Easy ticketing increases ticket sales (16 % of single tickets are SMS tickets, 46 % in trams) Reduces the need to sell tickets in bus/tram reduces travel times Decreases printing and distribution costs Environmentally friendly ticketing solution Cuts investments in vending machines Reduces maintenance and vandalism costs

9 Next Generation Travel Card The Travel Card system will be renewed around : The new system will probably be check-in & check-out type. Real time positioning using GPS. The system enables charging according to the length of the trip. Paying on Internet will be possible. Also mobile paying based on NFC technology (=RFID= contactless identification") will come true in the near future.

10 Bio Fuel Pilot for second generation biofuel pilot in Helsinki metropolitan area bus traffic 1400 buses in Helsinki metropolitan area 50 % (700 vehicles) would use bio fuel in the pilot Pilot schedule traditional diesel 5 % RME (1. generation biofuel) 30 % NExBTL (2. generation biofuel) 100 % NExBTL (2. generation biofuel) Decision of the pilot should be done in 2006 depending on the Ministry of Treasury and the Ministry of Trade and Industry Biofuel would be produced by Nest Oil Ltd Theoretical value of savings in environmental emissions is 5,5 Million euros / year

11 Automated driverless metro The present Helsinki metro control system is outdated and it s impossible to get new spare parts. New metro extensions are not possible until the control system is renewed. The cost of metro automatisation is approximately 70 Million. Automated metro creates several benefits: Shorter intervals (2 min) can be used more passengers Shorter trains can be used Traffic supply can be planned accurately according to the demand Drivers can be used in other ways
