4 PRIMOVE true e-mobility The future of mobility is e-mobility As societies face growing pressure to reduce CO 2 emissions and find solutions to ongoing urbanization, the timing for clean and more sustainable forms of mobility is right. Increasing emissions, populations and urban congestion are impacting the environment and everyone s quality of life. Lively hubs of commerce and culture, cities naturally attract people. Today about 50% of the world s population already lives in or around cities. By 2050, this number could reach as high as 70%. The implications for mobility in cities are profound. The need to look ahead and deliver easily accessible, efficient, quiet and green transportation door-todoor, has never been greater. With public pressure mounting, many countries and cities have already committed to meeting CO 2 reduction targets and introducing quality-of-life improvement initiatives. 5 PRIMOVE true e-mobility Growing our PRIMOVE e-mobility portfolio The portfolio began with the PRIMOVE wireless charging system. It provides a contactless power source for all electric vehicles, from light rail and bus networks to commercial vehicles and cars. We then developed the PRIMOVE battery for public transport vehicles, enabling high power recharging at the lowest weight and volume currently on the market. 6 PRIMOVE charging Change the way to charge In developing PRIMOVE wireless charging, we started with a vision, imagining a city where all vehicles are electric, emission-free and quiet. No pollution, no fumes, no noise. We had a vision of one e-mobility technology for all types of rail and road vehicles: trams, buses, trucks, vans and cars; without catenaries, cables, wires or plugs completely invisible and automatic. We imagined electric vehicles that don t change our driving habits or journey times. And from that vision, we created a system that is available now. It s called PRIMOVE wireless charging. Jérémie Desjardins, Business Leader PRIMOVE 6 The technology behind PRIMOVE charging PRIMOVE wireless charging is based on high power inductive energy transfer between components buried underground and receiving equipment installed beneath the vehicle. Wayside components communicate with the vehicle to start the contactless charging process automatically as soon as the vehicle completely covers the charging segment. The invisible system transfers energy without contact at very high levels of efficiency. E-vehicles can be charged rapidly and seamlessly either in motion (dynamic charging) or at rest (static charging) without the need for extra fleet vehicles or batteries. By eliminating the overhead cables and other wires previously needed to power electric vehicles, mass transit networks can now blend in with their surroundings. City landmarks, parks and heritage sites are left intact, minimizing visual pollution and enhancing the city s overall charm. Why chose PRIMOVE wireless charging? Flexible and fast: Mass transit networks, fleet operators and car owners can now benefit from all the advantages of e-powered mobility, without experiencing the range and recharging constraints usually associated with electric charging. 7 PRIMOVE charging Reliable and easy: PRIMOVE wireless charging is robust, weatherproof and tamperproof. It operates reliably even in the most adverse ground and weather conditions including sand, snow and ice. With prefabricated and tested modules, the system is quickly and easily installed on both new and existing rail or road infrastructure. Designed for optimal health and safety The PRIMOVE charging system is designed to ensure full passenger, driver, operational staff and pedestrian health and safety. The charging segments are switched on when the vehicle is positioned directly above them. In this way, electromagnetic fields are only created during charging and fully contained under the vehicle. Competitive and efficient: By maximizing the concept of high power opportunity charging, the PRIMOVE system reduces total cost of ownership (TCO). PRIMOVE batteries are designed to meet urban transit needs and ensure long battery life. Unlike large batteries, their compact size has no impact on vehicle passenger capacity. Vehicle availability also remains unaffected thanks to the rapid charging process. Together this means no need to increase the size of your fleet. Wayside infrastructure and maintenance are also kept to a minimum, while wear, tear and the risk of vandalism are eliminated. Supported by TÜV SÜD for safe operation, PRIMOVE complies with all applicable requirements for electromagnetic field (EMF) emissions in public areas. The system also meets relevant electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) standards, ensuring no impact on modern heart pacemakers and electrical devices such as mobile phones. 7
8 PRIMOVE charging Fast opportunity charging: no compromise on performance Range and recharging constraints are the key concerns for converting from conventional diesel and combustion engines to electric power. The PRIMOVE charging system addresses these issues with a solution that is light, competitive and easy to integrate by combining opportunity charging with fast energy transfer at high power levels. Seamless integration of the charging process into existing operations ensures uninterrupted service without any need for additional fleet vehicles or batteries. PRIMOVE tram: freedom from overhead lines In many ways, trams and light rail vehicles are the ultimate form of e-mobility. Yet despite being clean and convenient, they have always been hampered by one disadvantage catenaries. With PRIMOVE inductive charging, light rail vehicles can now run without the need for unsightly poles and overhead lines. The energy source is moved underground which means trams can be integrated into urban areas where conventional catenary networks are prohibited or unwelcome. Fast opportunity charging for trams Charging segments are installed at tram stops, subsequent metres and challenging sections. Unfortunately, few of these approaches offer a sustainable solution to our dependence on fossil fuel. More often than not, they involve serious compromises in cost, vehicle availability, service reliability and aesthetics. In essence, these solutions fail to address the key issue of making the electric bus market competitive and attractive. PRIMOVE wireless charging succeeds where others fail. In the electric automotive market, the main barriers to entry are fears about range constraints and the hassle associated with plug-in systems. For commercial fleets, vehicle availability and service reliability are even more crucial to success. Premium PRIMOVE tram solution: For 100% CFO lines, using PRIMOVE batteries and PRIMOVE wireless charging together ensures that the cityscape is not altered or spoiled by catenaries. PRIMOVE battery for e-buses Thanks to their modular and scalable design, PRIMOVE battery systems can be easily customized to any type and size of electric bus. Using PRIMOVE inductive charging, the battery size can be kept to a minimum while allowing the e-bus to run for a full day of service. Standard PRIMOVE tram solution: If overhead lines are acceptable at tram stops and subsequent metres, PRIMOVE batteries can be charged conductively via the pantograph. This solution is especially suitable for existing catenary tram systems where CFO is required only on specific sections. 11
