Ideas for collaboration At the NRIG executive meeting-felt it was a good idea for us to collaborate. It is a natural partnership. What can we provide to members that are a little bit bigger to draw people out and share research knowledge and educational knowledge? If we are willing to go forward we can start to talk about what it would look like-a one day workshop or some other venue. Mentoring nurses in the front line to get involved in research. Great idea to do a partnership. Wonderful ideas, but how do we take it to the next level. Ideas from RNIG. Doing a webinar about publication. We could open it up or make a joint sponsored educational event. At a higher level we could plan a bigger event to showcase our interests to RNAO members. Research competencies at different levels of education. Putting the competencies into practice. Interest groups be more explicit and have a better understanding of what are the expectations All Plan to attend our January 20 th meeting. PNEIG could meet earlier and then NRIG could us for the later part of our meeting.

3 3 coming out of undergraduate and graduate nursing programs. What is the level of competence for nurses coming out of graduate programs? With non-thesis master programs who is generating research. It is a thought that research is driven by masters prepared nurses working with front line staff are generating research. Novice nurse research program help front line nurses engage in research studies that leads to publication. Are we comparable to our other health professional colleagues in leading research? What does this look like in larger institutions verses smaller, community based hospitals? It is contextual on where people are practicing. What is happening in nursing? Nurses working as NPs are working on a medical model and are not participating in nursing research. In certain practice areas RPNs outnumber RN. There are areas where research is not even a competency that nurses are being prepared for. The role of nurses is changing and how nurses are practicing is changing. Think tank between the two interest groups on the future of nursing practice. At UHN we have large numbers of masters prepared nurses and NPS who do not feel confident in leading research. We are working on this in our organization, but what is it like for other areas that have less resources. Is there an opportunity for collaboration across the province? This type of work has been done with Fraser Health and shared across the province with funding in BC. There are some really good ideas for our collaboration. Could we combine our AGMs to bring our memberships together for coffee/social time and then a joint guest speaker? We could plan a face to face meeting in May as well as a better time of year for us to meet. The RNAO AGM is the first weekend in May UHN has research underway that could be shared in May Could we have a smaller working group that could meet on a monthly meeting or bi monthly meeting? Put out a call for volunteers. There is also an opportunity to engage some students. Students could learn a lot from joining with us on collaborating on a joint educational project. Touch base in early January.

4 4 Feedback from NRIG Regarding the survey we are interested in doing. Is this something we would be interested in collaborating on? Review the questions on the basis of statistical analysis. Send out the survey in early January and we will probably get a better return. Old Business Fall Members Voices-Elizabeth Survey on Student Safety- All Marianne will send to Elizabeth. Who can share with the executive? We need to tap into the second semester students-catch it at the end of December or early January so we can share the results. Do we want a question around how many failed components result in you failing the program? To progress in a program the student needs to pass clinical and theory courses to progress to the next semester. Failed theory or failed clinical they you have a program failure. Students have to wait a year and then can reapply to the program. If the failure happens then the student can no longer register for courses. The student is withdrawn from the program. Student is notified via a letter that they are withdrawn. Add a question How many failures can a student have before they are withdrawn from the program. One clinical failure Two clinical failures More than two clinical failures Do we add a question about academic preparation? This would be good information to collect about our PNEIG members. What is your policy on failure? Follow up with Sue. Analysis Question Add what concerns you about your clinical education program. Add a comment 1. What percentage of the time are your junior student s patients being cared for by an RN? RPN? Other? 2. What percentage of the time is your senior students are assigned patients cared for by an RN RPN PSW Other? Where does research utilization sit with the students who work with RPNS or PSWs who do not have this as part of their scope of practice? Direct supervision of an RN clinical facilitator. The students don t see RNs in practice in some clinical Marianne will send out updated power point for PNEIG

5 5 environments. We haven t committed to any formal research project with NRIG yet. It is time sensitive for us to get the survey out to both PNEIG and NRIG members. RNAO has a survey tool that we can use their tool. If we put it through home office they have staff who could build this for us. The more data that we can collect before the NCLEX exam will be better for looking at the current state of Nursing. Is there still an opportunity for RNAO to voice students concerns with the number of times they can re-write? Can we lobby with RNAO to allow for greater number for re-writes with the new exam? This needs to put on a future agenda. What do we as a committee want to advocate for If a student writes but fails in June they can defer and then have two opportunities to write the NCLEX. Next Meeting December 2013 Lost members voices for the Fall. Elizabeth has followed up with Penny. She was perturbed that the was lost. Penny has since found the minutes. Penny is going on leave at the end of November. We could have a short meeting in December. Could we meet on December 17 th instead with a short agenda? Could we try a daytime meeting in December? NCLEX exam discussion on our next meeting agenda. Elizabeth has followed up. This will be reflected in the assembly fall minutes.
