TEACHING Areas of special interest and accomplishments I teach Business Technology Management (BTM) especially in the areas of Business Intelligence and Analytics; Database Design (Big Data and NoSQL DB); e-commerce; and Human Computer Interface Design. Our students are some of the brightest in our province. To challenge them, I take the perspective of IT-Entrepreneurship. In my humble opinion, the best way to learn about a business is to start a small business or manage one at least. From here the theory flows. My objective is to help students develop i) self-confidence, ii) a critical awareness of business processes, (iii) connecting social phenomenon with business impacts, and iii) thinking out-of-the-box in problem-solving. My courses at UBC borrow from my teaching experience in Singapore. They are rigorous, challenge my students to their full potential, and only excellence is acceptable. But textbooks and exams are only one facet of my teaching. I embrace the total experience of learning and work-life preparation by preparing my students for world class IT-business case competitions. Here students have to present before an audience of total strangers and industry C-Suite executives who are poised to tear apart their plans and presentations if they fall short.
