4 Documentation to Meet Legal, Ethical and Payment Requirements Friday, September 11 This course will help therapists in all practice settings understand the legal documentation requirements in Louisiana as prescribed by the PT Practice Act and Rules and Regulation; Ethical considerations related to APTA Code of Ethics when documenting patient encounters; Clinical documentation requirements to meet CMS and insurer payment criteria and Billing and Coding requirements when submitting bills for payment. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course participants will be able to: 1. Identify the La.PT Board s documentation requirements as defined in the Board s Rules and Regulation. 2. Understand and apply clinical documentation requirements for demonstrating Medical Necessity and Skilled PT Services, and avoid payment denials by CMS and other insurers. 3. Identify billing and coding requirements in the practice of PT and operation of a practice. 4. Identify ethical standards related to documentation of Physical Therapy services; understand Fraud and Abuse and how to avoid violations of the APTA Code of Ethics related to documentation. Current Concepts and Advances in Orthopedic and Sports Knee Rehabilitation Saturday & Sunday, September Course content will provide current concepts related to common orthopedic and sports related knee injuries. Injuries discussed will include both those of traumatic and overuse. Emphasis on history and physical examination will be discussed, as well as treatment approaches that are both conservative and surgical when indicated. Treatments are described using the best available present evidence for these varying conditions. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of the course participants will be able to: 1. Explain the medical interventions utilized in the management of pathological conditions of the knee commonly seen by physical therapists. 2. Justify and relate the latest special testing procedures of specific pathologies of the knee. 3. Design and justify appropriate rehabilitation programs for different knee pathologies. 4. Recognize and evaluate common knee injuries. 5. Describe pathological conditions of the knee frequently encountered by PTs. 6. Discuss therapeutic exercise and compare and contrast techniques for various knee pathologies. 7. Uses a clinical decision making process to establish a differential diagnosis, synthesized from data obtained by the PT examination. 8. Develop evidence based rehabilitation programs for specific pathologies that are based on current scientific literature. 9. Organize symptoms into clusters, syndromes or categories in order to be placed in appropriate treatment regimes. 10. Comprehend functional anatomy of the knee. 11. Integrate current exercise technology into the rehabilitation process for knee injuries. Robert C. Manske, PT, DPT, MPT, MEd, SCS, ATC CSCS Mr. Manske is a Professor and Chair of the Doctoral Physical Therapy Program at Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. Rob graduated from WSU in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts in Physical Education, a Master of Physical Therapy degree in 1994, and further earned a Master of Education degree in Physical Education in He received his DPT from Massachusetts General Institute of Health Professions in Rob has been an APTA Board Certified Sports Physical Therapist since Rob is also a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association, and a certified Athletic Trainer (ATC) through the National Athletic Trainers Association. Rob has been nominated and received numerous awards for excellence in teaching at the local, state and national level receiving the APTA Sports Section s Excellence in Education Award in He became the Vice President of the APTA Sports Physical Therapy Section in 2009 and is now in his second term in that role.

5 Functional Gait Training for the Neurologically Impaired Client Saturday & Sunday, September This course includes lecture and laboratory practice that focuses on analyzing and treating gait deviations commonly observed in patients with brain lesions due to cerebral palsy, CVA, and traumatic brain injury. Participants will be taught NDT facilitation strategies to improve trunk and hip stability for standing and single limb stance. Therapists will have an opportunity to practice a variety of treatment, handling skills that address stance stability, limb advancement, and balance during forward and backward stepping. Problem solving common impairments in gait and establishing appropriate functional goals for a patient will be discussed. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course participants will be able to: 1. Understand the neuromotor and biomechanical components of normal gait that are critical to function. 2. Identify specific motor deviations and impairments that affect functional gait in patients with CVA and brain lesion. 3. Learn and practice treatment strategies that improve postural control in standing by increasing trunk and hip stability. Learn and practice treatment strategies to improve single limb stance control, and increase velocity and step length in gait. Nicky Schmidt, PT, C/NDT is a licensed Physical Therapist and consultant who received her Bachelor s of Science Degree in Physical Therapy from Louisiana State University Medical Center in During her 37 years of clinical practice she has worked as a neurological rehabilitation specialist in a broad spectrum of healthcare settings including acute care hospitals, short-term rehabilitation facilities, outpatient clinics, home health and private practice. Mrs. Schmidt was an Associate Clinical Professor at LSU Medical Center in the 1980 s and has been a Coordinator-Instructor for the North American Neuro-Developmental Treatment Association, Inc. since She is NDT certified in both pediatric and adult treatment, and she has taught post-graduate NDT introductory, basic and advanced neuro rehabilitation courses to healthcare professionals throughout the United States, Canada and abroad for over 30 years. She is a past board member and Chair of the NDTA Instructor Group. Currently, Nicky works part-time in private practice in the New Orleans area specializing in the treatment of both adult and pediatric clients who have suffered a stroke, brain injury, or other neurological lesions. Mrs. Schmidt is also co-founder of Women s and Men s Nutrition and Weight Control Centers of Louisiana. The center is an educational training facility for men and women that teaches individuals how to eat, exercise, and live healthy to decrease their risks for heart attack or stroke, a major cause of disability in Americans today. Decisions, Decisions: How to Recognize Ethical Dilemmas in the Physical Therapy Profession and Proceed in a Sound Ethical Manner Sunday, September 13 This 2 hour CEU course is based on the APTA s Code of Ethics for the Physical Therapist and the Standards of Ethical Conduct for the Physical Therapist Assistant. It will introduce definitions and terminology related to ethics, and the RIPS model (Realm-Individual-Process-Situation model) of ethical decision making. Attendees will participate in small group discussions of ethical dilemmas commonly encountered in the physical therapy profession, and use the RIPS model to clarify the ethical compass on how to proceed. COURSE OBJECTIVES: (Subject to change) At the completion of this course participants will be able to: 1. Discuss the prevalence of fraud, abuse and misuse in clinical practice. 2. Define terminology that relates to ethics. 3. Describe the ethical principles that form the foundation of physical therapy practice. 4. Describe the RIPS model to ethical decision making. 5. Discuss ethical decision-making processes in common patient care scenarios. 6. Apply the RIPS model to clarify ethical decision-making in physical therapy scenarios. Christine Cook, PT, MS is an assistant professor at Our Lady of the Lake College in Baton Rouge, and has practiced in a variety of clinical settings since She is a graduate of Texas Woman s University, and has been teaching in the PTA program at OLOLC for five years.

RESEARCH PRESENTATIONS Research presentations will be on Friday from 4:00 pm 5:00 pm. Jurisprudence/Town Hall FREE Course Sunday, September 13 This is a course offered by the LPTB and is of no charge to licensees who wish to attend. This course is an inter-active seminar for licensees to understand the Practice Act and Rules and Regulations that govern the practice of physical therapy in the state of Louisiana. Participants will learn about the Board's process of investigating complaints that are submitted to the Board and the process of discipline. The Board will provide information on Rules for clarification and Participants are welcome to ask questions to the Board Members regarding clarification on Rules. The second half of the seminar is dedicated to a Town Hall component, which is an open forum to discuss topics of the audience's choosing, which can range from board updates to national trends in physical therapy. LPTA representatives are present during the Town Hall component to answer questions that are outside the scope of the Board, such as payment, billing and potential advances in the practice. COURSE OBJECTIVES: At the completion of this course participants will: 1. Understand the process for submitting a complaint and the Board action that follows. 2. Understand the Rules and Regulations that govern the practice. 3. Understand current activities of the board and other activities relative to the practice. Al C. Moreau, III, Board Member Al C. Moreau, III, PT, MPT was appointed to the board by Governor Bobby Jindal November 18, 2010 for a three year term and was reappointed to the board by Governor Bobby Jindal December 6, 2013 for a second term. Al received his Master of Physical Therapy degree from Louisiana State University Medical Center School of Allied Health in New Orleans in He is a member of the American Physical Therapy Association, Louisiana Physical Therapy Association and the Private Practice section of the American Physical Therapy Association. Al is the President of Moreau Physical Therapy with locations throughout the state. GENERAL INFORMATION LPTA OPEN FORUM The Open Forum will be held on Friday, September 11, 2015 from 6:00 pm 7:00 pm. All are invited to attend. Please make plans to join us! Candidates will introduce themselves during that time. Awards will be presented for Friend of Physical Therapy, Louisiana Physical Therapy Hall of Fame, Physical Therapy Assistant Distinguished Service Award, and the Dave Warner Distinguished Service Award. BUSINESS MEETING AND LUNCH The Business Meeting and Luncheon will be held on Saturday, September 12, 2015 from 12:30 pm 2:00 pm. The purpose of this meeting is to inform you of the accomplishments LPTA has made over the past year and the future direction of LPTA. Election results will also be announced! DRESS ATTIRE During the Fall educational seminar and business meeting of the LPTA, we will have several special guests in attendance and we will be in Baton Rouge during a busy time. To help promote the Physical Therapy community as a doctoring profession, and as independent practitioners, we are asking all attendees to dress similar to business casual attire for the weekend courses. Suggested attire would include: collared shirts, blouses, casual pants or jeans in good repair with appropriate shoes or sandals. T-shirts, shorts, scrubs and flip flops are discouraged.
