1 UNIVERSITY OF ILORIN, FACULTY OF EDUCATION, DEPARTMENT OF COUNSELLOR EDUCATION COURSEWARE CED 307 (REHABILITATION COUNSELLING) Course: CED 307 Rehabilitation Counselling (2 Credits-Compulsory) Course Duration: Two hours per week for 15 weeks (30 hours) Lecturer: OMOTOSHO, Joshua A. Ph.D. Guidance and Counselling (Athens, Ohio), M.L.S. Library Science (Zaria), B.Sc. Technical Education. (Nsukka) Location: Room 9 Counsellor Education Department Block, Faculty of Education, University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. Consultation Hours: 11.00am-1.00pm (Mondays and Wednesdays) Course Content The psychological and vocational rehabilitation of the disabled and the handicapped for better integration into the society. Diagnostic methods and techniques for categorizing the disabled and for identifying the types of counselling and vocational training needed. Course Description The course attempts a definition of the concept of rehabilitation counselling. It also focuses on the philosophy of rehabilitation and the basic principles of it. It gives a brief historical background to rehabilitation. The major concepts of rehabilitation as well as the role, function and scope of the practice of rehabilitation counselling are examined. Processes for establishing autonomy as key elements of rehabilitation counselling as a profession are exemplified by accreditation, certification, 1
2 licensure and registration are explored. The course examines certain guidelines for talking about disability and the rules for appropriate language for use with persons with disability. Course Justification Helping others encompasses a responsibility to acquire and maintain knowledge and skills, as well as to recognize that the potential for unintended harm is always present. The justification for this course is premised, therefore, on the fact that it is important for those entering this helping relationship area to acquire basic knowledge which will help to develop the right professional identity for helping indeed. Course Objectives The main objective of the course is to introduce learners to the processes involved in rehabilitation counselling. As a result of participating in this course, learners will be able to: Define the term rehabilitation counseling to the understanding of a novice in the profession. Identify the basic rehabilitation counselling services that are available. Identify the variety of roles and functions of the rehabilitation counsellor. Identify the leadership and advocacy roles of rehabilitation counsellors. Identify the roles of various people and agencies in developing and maintaining a rehabilitation agency. Develop an understanding of the psychosocial impacts of disability. Demonstrate skill in using appropriate guidelines for talking about disability. Demonstrate skill and capability in exhibiting appropriate behaviour when meeting persons with disabilities. 2
3 Course Requirements In addition to online interaction, learners will be required to read widely literature that are relevant for understanding the course well. Students will visit a rehabilitation agency or a school for the handicapped that is school closest to them and interact with its teachers and students in order to get hands-on experience of the content of the course. Learners are expected to attend classes 75% of the total number of classes before they can sit for the examination. 6 Week 3: Role and Function of Rehabilitation Counsellor Objectives The main objective of this week is to investigate the role and function of the rehabilitation counsellor. Description The roles and functions of rehabilitation counsellors are investigated. Some common roles examined include assessment and appraisal; diagnosis and treatment planning, career (vocational) counselling, etc. 1. Make a list of tasks you would perform as a rehabilitation counsellor in a rehabilitation agency. 2. Make a list of various persons who may benefit from the rehabilitation counsellors. 3.
