Consultation Hours: 12:00pm 2:00pm on Mondays and Thursdays Course Content Introduces the concept of Management Information System (MIS) in the context of an organization and its applications from various perspectives. These are Management of computing from a people and data perspectives, demonstrating that computerbased systems are an important tool for effective management. Strategies and nature of information systems, managing change and models of change. And lastly, looking into the strategic planning of MIS and ways of maintaining its sustainability in an organization. Course The focus is on Management Information System (MIS) and its applications. The characteristics of each of the applications which include Decision support system (DSS), Expert System (ES), Executive Information System (EIS) etc. will be given priority. The evolution of MIS in organizations which spanns from the initiation to the repositioning stage will be looked at. The requirements for a successful implementation of a Computerized Management Information System in an organization, elements of an MIS which include data/information telecommunication Infrastructures, Human resources and policy framework will equally be considered. And finally, issues on strategic planning, MIS culture and change management will all be addressed. Course Justification This course will afford students the opportunity of applying the knowledge of MIS in effecting change management in an organization. Management information is an essential ingredient in the decision making process of an organization which makes it an indespensable resource which 1
2 needs to be properly harnessed for it to contribute to the organization s profitability and sustainability. Hence, MIS enables an organization to capture, organize, store and retrieve relevant information from the various units/departments to influence decision making. In otherwords, MIS enables relevant data and information to be pooled from various sub- systems within an organization and presented to Management to take informed decisions when the need arises. Course Objectives At the completion of the course students should be able to: Explain the meaning of MIS and its various applications; Describe the importance of MIS as a Management tool in effecting change in an organization; Design and develop an appropriate MIS application for an organization using any of the known approaches; Explain the ways MIS culture can be entrenched in an organization; and Evaluate the successes or failures of MIS in an organizations. Course Requirements Students must comply with the below requirement: 1. Students must possess a minimum of 75% attendance. 2. Individual /group presentation is a key requirement for this course. This will enable students to inculcate presentation and writing skills. 3. Online forum is a key requirement which will be facilitated by joining yahoo groups. 4.
