4 My most recent ministries are marked by success in Christian Formation. Through seasonal programming (Fall and Lenten series), I have been able to deepen congregations' discussion of mission, as well as interfaith understanding. During Lent 2013, I developed a series for Church of Reconciliation (San Antonio, TX) to enter into personal narrative sharing as the foundation for authentic missional engagement. During Lent 2012, I provided the regional community of St. Helena's (Boerne, TX) with a dialogue series between a panel of rabbis and clergy for the development of common understandings and background for our Christian discipleship. In the Fall of 2011, I facilitated a dialogue series with regional and community organization leaders highlighting the tangibility and possibility of missional church development. I have experience, and comfort, in the diversity of Anglican liturgical expression. In all expressions, I strive for liturgical practice to be authentic and intentional for the immersion of the congregation in the work of God and the transformation of our lives. Liturgy is the primal way we are shaped by the Holy Spirit as we come to recognize the tangibility of the kingdom of God. I find grace in the specific ways my previous communities have chosen to, or grown into, experience our liturgies. Be it the reflection of Anglo-Catholic sensibilities, the visceral connection of Charismatic worship, the musicality of contemporary worship, the grace of emerging alternative and multi-sensory worship, or the stability of common broad-church worship, I find grace, joy, and comfort in each. How do you practice incorporating others in ministry? I take seriously the example of Luke 10. The empowerment, equipping, and deployment of God's people is essential to the work of the clergy as leaders of the Church. I strive to incorporate others at different levels. For example, personally I prefer to empower through personal invitation (such as meeting with new members). As a leader, I seek systematic empowerment through models of deployment and debriefing, rather than gate-keeping. Finally, I work to incorporate others in ministry by cultural empowerment through processes such as coherent stewardship formation or asset-mapping.
5 How do you care for your spiritual, emotional and physical well-being? My family nourishes me. I hold great joy in our time together, even if it's just being silly, laughing together, dancing with my wife in the kitchen, or exploring new areas through travel. I strive to maintain my daily discipline of Daily Office and physical exercise. I value regular relationships with a spiritual director and a clergy colleague group. I seek personals outlet in photography and the graphic arts. I really enjoy cooking and experiencing other cultures through their cuisine. Finally, be it a TED Talk, conference, or lecture, I seek out regular and diverse intellectual stimulation and learning, I have focused my involvement in the wider Church principally to enrich the life and community of my dioceses. I have served as called by my dioceses, either in ministry or leadership, such as Camp Chaplain in the Diocese of West Texas, Diocesan Council (as Vice President and Department Chair) in the Diocese of Hawaii, or the reconstruction of the diocesan youth program in the Diocese of Central Pennslvania. I served as a clergy deputy for General Convention 2009 and mentor for the Second Three Years Program of Virginia Theological Seminary & Lily Endowment. Within my respective communities, I have served as a reading volunteer to kindergarteners and preschoolers. I seek to express a healthy engagement by participating in community organizations and programs, such as the local Board of Habitat for Humanity and County Women's Shelter. The State Senate of Hawaii also invited me on 3 separate occasions to offer the opening Invocation for their annual session. How do you engage in pastoral care for others? So many individuals and families struggle silently, or alone, through "dark, deep valleys." In the diversity of our many lives, I know personally the need for grace and mercy for all God's people. I engage in pastoral care in 2 ways. First, I consider all moments as pastoral in nature. This means I see all interactions as a moment of dealing with the hearts, souls, and minds of God's people. I engage others by seeking to hear and know the stories they share, the trials and triumphs they bear. I keep open office hours and maintain my cellular phone for these purposes. Second, I seek strong lay partners. These leaders not only pastorally engage people within our community, but provide me with pastoral insights for situations that may be delicate, hidden, emerging.
6 As Rector of St. Peter s, Honolulu, we developed a significant prayer breakfast ministry for the many at-risk students of the adjacent public middle school. The ministry began simply with me leading a weekly group of adults in prayer for the school at the edge of the physical campus. The gathering was simple: meeting on the school grounds for a short time of talking and building fellowship with students, followed by prayers for the students' specific intentions. After 6 months, the prayer gathering included 80 middle school boys each Wednesday. With the significant growth of the group, the gathering was moved to the church parish hall, where the students share in fellowship games, a safe gathering space amid the harsh urban landscape, a simplified morning prayer and faith-filled teaching. Each gather concludes with a church provided breakfast. The ministry mentors and fosters faith in the lives of the students. Mr. Willis Yap (willis@mutualunderwriters.com) coordinates the ministry. How are you preparing yourself for the Church of the future? I am currently reading for my degree as Doctor of Ministry with Fuller Seminary, Pasadena, California. My final work focuses on the formative reality of eucharistic liturgy which shapes us into missional praxis as the church and individuals. I have worked to keep my Spanish speaking abilities proficient. I seek out means to be of active assistance for a mutual mission growth of congregations and leaders, acting as consultant and coach. I have sought ministry experiences that intentional feed the future realities of the Church, multicultural ministries, urban ministries, and transitional ministries. My continuing education include skill development for development of diverse communities through conflict resolution, inclusive practices, and consensus building. Finally, my latest learning has focused on organizational change and financial management in non-profit organizations. community? Our household observes the tithe as our standard for stewardship of time and financial resources. We give our tithe of financial gifts through the church before any other savings or expenses are made. We hope our practice of stewardship provides a practical example and affirmation to the people of our congregations. I share my tithe of time and resources in ministries for the diocese or other extra-parochial ministries.
7 Every community has conflict. In my best moments, I consider conflict as opportunity- to listen, to learn, to stretch, to discern, to refine. I have found group dynamic methods of mutual invitation extremely helpful to focus conflict constructively and avoid denying conflicts presence. Additionally, direct, intentional, open, respectful, and abundant communication keeps us from digging in heels and taking matters personally. I strive to live into these patterns more fully as much as I hope my communities do as well. What is your experience leading/addressing change in the church? When has it gone well? When has it gone poorly? And what did you learn? Transitional work have been the focus of my leadership, particularly changes associated congregational redevelopment and missional development. Change went well with St. Peter's, Honolulu, bringing a redevelopment of the community's life in mission. The experience demonstrated the power of consensus, transparency, communication, and, most of all, prayerful dialogue and discernment. Conflict went poorly in St. Helena's, Boerne, following fiscally necessary staff changes. The experience reaffirmed the need for intentional discussion with interested parties, and acting methodical (even if it appears slow).
