1 UNIVERSITY OF CALABAR CALABAR ADMISSION INTO GRADUATE PROGRAMMES 2014/2015 Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for admission into graduate programmes in the 2014/2015 academic year leading to the award of Post Graduate Diploma, Masters, MPhil and Doctor of Philosophy Degrees of the University of Calabar. A. GENERAL REGULATIONS Courses may be offered full-time or part-time. All programmes begin with coursework and end with a project for Graduate Diploma, MBA, MPA and MPAS or thesis for Masters and Ph.D degrees. For full-time studies in most programmes, the Post Graduate Diploma lasts for one calendar year, the Masters degrees last for 2 years and the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) programmes extend over a minimum of 3 years. Part-time programmes take a much longer time. Candidates with Masters degree from recognized universities may credit the relevant courses towards the Ph.D programme, provided the quality of the grade is acceptable to the Graduate School. Candidates are required to have a minimum CGPA of 3.00 on a 5-point scale and 2.75 on a 4-point scale for Masters programmes and 4.00 on a 5-point scale and 3.00 on a 4-point scale for Ph.D programmes. Note: Filling of forms Surname First, First Name next, Middle Name last. All PGD programmes are run on full time basis. There will be no changes made after submission of application forms online. Therefore candidate must think through before submission as any change will attract a fee. This is to prevent multiple applications. The titles Mr, Miss or Mrs may be used but not Rev (Dr), Chief, etc. Programmes applied for should be M.A, M.Ed, M.Sc.Ed, M.Sc, MPH, LL.M, Ph.D, MPhil/Ph.D, PGDE, PGDEE, PGDPA, PGDM, PGD, etc. B. SPECIAL INFORMATION FOR MPhil/Ph.D CANDIDATES The MPhil/Ph.D option is available for all programmes. Candidates may be admitted into the MPhil/Ph.D programme in exceptional circumstances where the CGPA in the Masters degree is lower than the minimum required B (60%) average or 4.00 on a 5-point scale. This should however not fall below 55% average or 3.5 on a 5 point scale. The MPhil/Ph.D option will also be available to candidates interested in pursuing Ph.D programmes in fields different from, but relevant to that in which they obtained their Masters degree. A terminal MPhil degree will be awarded if the candidate fails to make the minimum required to transit to the Ph.D programme. C. MODE OF APPLICATION Interested candidates are to first log on to our website to access the prospectus for the complete description of available courses. Thereafter, candidates are required to pay a non-refundable fee of N15, at any branch of the under-listed banks nationwide. A printout with a unique pin will be issued at the bank. Candidates would then enter their unique pin and their mobile phone numbers on the website to access the form. Follow the steps by providing your data as prompted and ensure that your form is submitted. YOU ARE TO PRINT OUT A COPY OF YOUR FORM AND CONCEPT NOTE, BY CLICKING ON PRINT button after submission. Please bring a copy of the printed form to the venue on the day of the screening. Process flow of E-Scratch Card for UNICAL Post Graduate Application 1. Walk into any bank across the federation and make payment on E-Transact platform to purchase Graduate School application form for 2014/2015 academic session 2. Walk into any Enterprise Bank across the federation and make payment on Calpay platform to purchase Graduate School application form for 2014/2015 academic session 3. Walk into any Zenith Bank across the federation and make payment on Xpath platform to purchase Graduate School form for 2014/2015 academic session 4. Make a payment of N15, and obtain the payment slip 5. Go online to 6. Log on with the generated pin on the payment slip to fill the Post Graduate form D. CONCEPT NOTE As part of the application, candidates are expected to submit a CONCEPT NOTE of 3 pages maximum for Ph.D programmes and a-one-and-awill be typed online in a space provided in the form and printed out for submission to the department. The concept note is a MINI SUMMARY OF RESEARCH PROPOSAL highlighting what candidates intend to research on when admitted. It has to cover the following: - Statement of the problem - Relevance of study to self and society - Aim(s) of the study - Justification - Methodology - Brief Theoretical Background Note: Candidates who fail to send their concept notes online along with their application forms will not be allowed to take part in the oral interview. 1

TRANSCRIPTS Candidates are to ensure that their academic transcripts are forwarded by their previous institutions to the Academic Secretary, Graduate School, University of Calabar, P.M.B. 1115, Calabar, Cross River State, on or before the deadline indicated below. F. 3 FACULTY OF AGRICULTURE, FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE RESOURCES MANAGEMENT Programmes leading to M.Sc, MPhil/Ph.D and Ph.D are available in the following departments: 3 DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURAL ECONOMICS & EXTENSION ENTRY REQUIREMENTS - Language and Mathematics) in not more than two sittings. (A) Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) in Agricultural Economics: (a) disciplines. (b) Higher National Diploma (HND) (lower credit) in Agriculture and related disciplines. (C) M.Sc. in Agricultural Economics: Candidates must hold a first degree in Agricultural Economics or related discipline from the University of Calabar or any other University recognized by the Senate, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75/4 OR 3.0 over 5. (D) M.Sc. in Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology: - Candidates must hold a first degree in either Agricultural Economics or Agricultural Education from the University of Calabar or any other University recognized by the Senate, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75/4 or 3.0 over 5. (E) Ph.D in Agricultural Economics: - Candidates for the Ph.D in Agricultural Economics in any of the fields of specialization must hold an M.Sc in Agricultural Economics with a minimum CGPA of 3.0 over 4 or 4.0 over 5. Candidates who have CGPAs a little lower than these will be considered for an M.Phil/Ph.D. (F) Ph.D in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development: - Candidates applying for a Ph.D in Agricultural Extension and Rural Development must be holders of M.Sc in Agricultural Extension with a minimum CGPA of 3.0/4 or 4.0/5. Candidates with slightly lower CGPAs will be considered for an M.Phil/Ph.D. DEPARTMENT OF ANIMAL SCIENCE The Department offers courses leading to the award of Post Graduate Diploma (PGD), Master of Science (M. Sc.) and Doctoral (Ph.D.) Degrees in the following areas of specialization; Animal Breeding and Genetics Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry Animal Physiology and Health Animal Production and Management Minimum Requirement Candidates seeking admission into any of the programmes, must have five credi or NECO at not more than two sittings (subjects include: English, Mathematics/Physics, Chemistry, Agriculture/ Biology). 1. Postgraduate Diploma Programme: PGD in Animal Breeding and Genetics PGD in Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry PGD in Animal Physiology and Health PGD in Animal Production and Management

4 4 Entry Requirement: In addition to the general requirement, candidates must have a first degree with a CGPA of 1.60 and above in an approved field of study by the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) from any University recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar. Graduates from the following disciplines are also eligible to apply; Biological Science Marine Science Biochemistry Zoology 2. Master of Science (M.Sc.) Programme o M.Sc. in Animal Nutrition & Biochemistry o M.Sc. in Animal Breeding & Genetics o M.Sc. in Animal Production & Management (sub-specialization in cattle production, poultry production, micro- livestock production, small ruminant production) o M.Sc. in Animal Physiology Entry Requirement: In addition to the general requirement, candidates must have a good first degree with a second class (HONS) grade point of 3.00 (3/5) in an approved field of study by the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science (NIAS) from any University recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar. 3. M. Phil./ Ph.D. programme: M.Phil./Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition & Biochemistry M.Phil./Ph.D. in Animal Production and management (sub-specialization in cattle production, poultry production, micro-livestock production, small ruminant production) M. Phil./Ph.D. Animal Physiology M.Phil./Ph.D. Animal Breeding and Genetics. Entry Requirement In addition to the general requirement, candidates must have scored 55% to 59% (CGPA of 3.50) at the Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree programme in Animal Science discipline. The degree must be from any university recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar. 4. Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Programme o Ph.D. in Animal Nutrition & Biochemistry o Ph.D. in Animal Production and Management (sub-specialization in cattle production, poultry production, micro- livestock production, small ruminant production) o Ph.D. in Animal Physiology o Ph.D. in Animal Breeding & Genetics Entry Requirement Candidates for Ph.D. Programme must have a good Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree in animal Science discipline (i.e. CGPA of 3/4, 4/5 or 60%) from any University recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar. DEPARTMENT OF CROP SCIENCE 1. POSTGRADUATE DIPLOMA PROGRAMMES The Department of Crop Science offers courses leading to the award of Postgraduate Diploma in two areas of Specialization: Crop Production and Crop Protection. Candidates for the Postgraduate Diploma programmes much be: i. graduates who possess at least a PASS DEGREE in any field of Agriculture or Related disciplines;

5 ii. applicants who hold HND {LOWER CREDIT} in any field of Agriculture or related disciplines MASTER OF SCIENCE (M.Sc.) DEGREE PROGRAMMES The Department of Crop Science offers courses leading to the award of M.Sc in three areas of specialization: Crop Production, Crop Protection (Options in Entomology and Pathology) and Crop Genetics and Breeding i. Candidates for the Degree of Master of Science (M.Sc.) must have a good First Degree in Agriculture or related science courses. A minimum of Second Class Lower Division with a CGPA of 3.00 is required on a 5 point scale or 2.75 on a 4 point scale. Graduates with less than 2.75 or 3.00 but with a PGD in Crop Production or Crop Protection with an average score of 60% or 3.00 Cumulative Average are eligible to apply. 3. MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY(M.Phil)/DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY(Ph.D) PROGRAMMES 3.1. Ph.D Degree The Department of Crop Science offers courses leading to the award PhD in three areas of specialization: Crop production, Crop Protection (Options in Crop Entomology and Pathology) and Crop Genetics and Breeding. Candidates for the PhD Programmes must have a good M.Sc degree in Agriculture or related disciplines. The candidate must have a minimum of 60% average score at M.Sc level M.Phil/Ph.D The Department of Crop Science offers courses leading to the award M.Phil/PhD in three areas of specialization: Crop production, Crop Protection (options in Crop Entomology and Pathology) and Crop Genetics and Breeding. Candidates for M.Phil/PhD must have an M. Sc degree in Agriculture or in Related Disciplines with average score not lower than 55% or 2.75/4 or 3.5/5 DEPARTMENT OF FORESTRY AND WILDLIFE RESOURCES MANAGEMENT (A) Postgraduate Diploma programme with specialization in the following: (a) PGD in Forest Resources Management (b) PGD in Wildlife Resources Management : (a) o (2) sittings in English, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science and one of Physics, Economics and Geography (b) B.Sc degree of the University of Calabar or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar in relevant areas with not less than pass level (c) HND with not below lower credit in Agriculture, Forestry, Wildlife, Environmental Science, Botany, Zoology or any other related field of study from institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar. (B) Master of Science degree programme with specialization in the following: (a) Silviculture and Forest Biology (b) Forest Biometrics (c) Forest Management and Economics (d) Forest Management and Biology (e) Environmental Forestry (f) Forest Protection (Pathology and Entomology) (g) Wildlife Nutrition and Domestication (h) Wildlife Range Management (i) Wildlife Management and Ecology (j) Wildlife Pathology (k) Wildlife Management and Ecotourism

6 6 (a) Mathematics, Biology or Agricultural Science and one of Physics, Economics and Geography (b) A the University of Calabar or other recognized universities, with CGPA of not less than 3.0/5 or 2.75/4 and at least an upper credit (at least 60% average) at the PGD in a relevant field from a recognized institution. DEPARTMENT OF SOIL SCIENCE The following programmes leading to the award of PGD, M.Sc and Ph.D in Soil Science exist: 1) Pedology 2) Soil Chemistry 3) Soil Fertility/Plant Nutrition 4) Soil Microbiology 5) Soil Physics & Soil and Water Management a) (i) (ii) (iii) West African School Certificate with passes at Credit level in at least five subjects including; English Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science or Biology, Chemistry and Physics. least five subjects including; English Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science or Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Senior Secondary School Certificate with credits in at least five subjects including; English Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science or Biology, Chemistry and Physics. b) Postgraduate Diploma (i) (ii) Graduate who posses at least a third class in any field of Agriculture or related science courses. Applicants who hold Higher National Diploma (Upper credit) in any field of Agriculture or related field of science c) M.Sc. Programme (i) (ii) Students for their M.Sc programme must have a good first degree in Agriculture or related science course. A minimum of second class lower with CGPA of 3.00 is required on a 5 point scale or 2.75 on a 4 point scale. Graduate with less than 2.75/4 or3.00/4 but with a Post Graduate Diploma in a Soil Science related discipline with an average score of 60% or 3.00/5 cumulative average. d) M. Phil./Ph.D Applicants must have a good Master of Science degree (Soil Science or related discipline) with an average score of at least 55%. e) Ph.D Programme Candidates for Ph.D programme must have a good Master of Science Degree (M.Sc) with an average score of at least 60% in Agriculture or related disciplines. FACULTY OF ALLIED MEDICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF MEDICAL LABORATORY SCIENCE 1. CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY UNIT a) Programmes leading to M.Sc, MPhil/Ph.D and Ph.D are available in the following areas of specialization. i. Clinical Enzymology

7 ii. Metabolic Disorders iii. Micronutrient/Antioxidant iv. Immunology v. Connective Tissue Protein vi. Liver Diseases vii. Toxicology 7 b) Postgraduate Diploma in Chemical Pathology (PGDCP) is also available Ph.D: The programme is open to candidates with M.Sc in Chemical Pathology, Biochemistry and Medical Laboratory Science with CGPA of 3.00/4.00 or 4.00/5.00. M.Sc: Open to those with First or Second class honours in Medical Lab Science, Biochemistry, Physiology and Chemical Pathology. Candidates with MBBCh degree or equivalents are eligible. For BMLS (Chemical Pathology), CGPA of not below 2.75/4.0 or 3.50/5.00 is accepted. PGD in Chemical Pathology with CGPA of 2.75/4.00 or 3.00/5.00 is also accepted. PGD in Chemical Pathology: The programme is open to candidates with the following qualifications: holders of MBBCh or its equivalent, First degree with second class lower in Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology and Haematology with CGPA not less than 1.60/5.00; FIMLT and AIMLT holders in Chemical Pathology with not less than B grade. Course duration: 1 year for Full time and 2 years for Part time. 2. MEDICAL MICROBIOLOGY/PARASITOLOGY UNIT 1. MSc/PhD programme are available in the following areas (a) Medical Bacteriology (b) Medical Parasitology (c) Medical Entomology (d) Public Health Microbiology (e) Medical Mycology Eligibility requirements for the MSc Programme Admission to the MSc programme is open to: (i) Holders of the West African School Certificate or its equivalent with a minimum of Credit level pass in 5 relevant subjects which must include English Language and Mathematics. (ii) Graduates who hold at least a second class (Hons) degree with a CGPA of 3.00/5 or 2.75/4 in Microbiology or any other related discipline from the University of Calabar or other institutions recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar. (ii) Candidates who hold other qualifications considered by the Faculty Graduate Board and Senate to be acceptable Eligibility requirements for the Ph.D programme Admission to the Ph.D programme is open to: (i) Holders of the West African School Certificate or its equivalent with a minimum of Credit level pass in 5 relevant subjects which must include English Language and Mathematics. (ii) Candidates with MSc degree in Microbiology/Parasitology or Medical Laboratory Science, subject to a minimum CGPA of 3.0/4. Holders of suitable B.Sc Honors degree will be admitted to the MSc programme in the first instance (iii) Candidates for PhD should include in their application, a written one page research statement describing his/her proposed research topic. 3. HAEMATOLOGY UNIT a) PGD Programme in Haematology Admission Requirements: WAEC, GCE, Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit level passes in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and English at not more than 2 sittings in addition to one of the following:

8 i) 8 Graduates of Medical Laboratory Science (Haematology specialty) with at least a second class lower division. ii) Holders of the MBBCh degree or its equivalent. iii) Holders of AMLSCN diploma. Only candidates who obtain a CGPA of 2.75/4 or 3.00/5 and above in the PGD shall be eligible for admission to the M.Sc. b) M.Sc Programme in Haematology Admission Requirements: WAEC, GCE, Senior Secondary School Certificate with credit level passes in Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology and English at not more than 2 sittings, in addition to one of the following: i) Holders of BMLS (Haematology specialty) or its equivalent with a CGPA of 2.75/4 or 3.00/5 ii) Holders of MBBCh or its equivalent iii) Holders of FMLSCN diploma by special examination or by dissertation in Haematology iv) Holders of PGD with a CGPA of not less than 2.75/4 or 3.00/5. DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC HEALTH Programmes leading to MPH and Ph.D in Public Health are offered. Requirements for admission to MPH degree programme are as follows: Bachelors degree from a recognized University in Public Health, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Medicine &Surgery (MB BCh or MBBS). Vet Medicine, Biochemistry, Civil Engineering, Law, Microbiology, Sociology, and Nutrition & Health Education (Not obtained from Faculty of Education). The minimum CGPA is 3.25/5.0 or 2.75/4.0. In addition, all applicants must have five Ordinary Level Credits in English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics at not more than two sittings. Requirements for admission to Ph.D degree programme are as follows: MPH degree or equivalent with a minimum CGPA of 4.00/5.0. Applicants are required to submit a one-page mission statement, write prescribed University of Calabar entrance exam and attend interview in the Department. Ordinary Level credit requirement in five subjects also apply. It is the responsibility of each PhD applicant to verify from the Department whether or not there is an expert in the area of Public Health he/she wishes to specialize BEFORE applying. All MPH and PhD applicants should note that the Department has NO part-time programme. DEPARTMENT OF NURSING SCIENCE The Department offers courses leading to the award of Master of Science Degree (M.Sc.) in Nursing in the following areas of specialization: 1) Community Health Nursing 2) Maternal and Child He 3) Nursing Administration and Management Minimum Requirements: Candidates seeking admission into the programme must have i) Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry & Biology) ii) A current, valid license of registration for practice from the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) In addition to the general requirements, to be considered for admission into the Masters Degree programme, the candidate must possess: a) Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing: First or Second class Honors Degree from an accredited and recognized University with a CGPA not lower than 3.0 on a 5 point scale; 2.75 on a 4 point scale in the Bachelors' programme..

9 9 b) Also the candidate must have submitted at least one (1) reference letter from his/her former Head of Department or Lecturer. d) Holders of Higher National Diploma (HND) with a minimum of Upper Credit or equivalent has Post Graduate diploma in Nursing. DEPARTMENT OF RADIOGRAPHY & RADIOLOGICAL SCIENCES: M. Sc Applications are invited into the Master of Science degree (M.Sc) in Medical Imaging Science, with specialization in the following subject areas: a. Medical Imaging b. Radiation Protection and Safety c. Radiography Education d. Radiographic Health Management, and e. Medical Imaging Physics Admission Requirements 1. Calabar, or any institution recognized by the University of Calabar, with a minimum CGPA of 2.75 (in the 4-point system) and 3.00 (in the 5-point system). 2. Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and English Language to be considered eligible. 3. Candidates must also possess evidence of completion of or exemption from the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). 4. Submission of an acceptable research synopsis is a requisite condition. DEPARTMENT OF RADIOGRAPHY & RADIOLOGICAL SCIENCES: PgDRAD Applications are invited into the post graduate diploma program in Radiography (PgDRAD) Admission Requirements A B.Sc degree with honours in Radiography with grade point average less than requirement for entry into the Master degree programmes (as obtained in the University of Calabar Graduate School Guidelines). Candidates with other relevant degrees/certificates e.g Diploma of the College of Radiographers (DCR) or Diploma of the Institute of Radiography (DIR) are acceptable for the PgDRAD in the first instance. Candidates with degree in Human Anatomy and Physics may be accepted for admission into the PgDRAD programme. Ap Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and English Language to be considered eligible. Candidates must also possess evidence of completion of or exemption from the mandatory national Youth Service Corps (NYSC). Submission of an acceptable research synopsis is requisite condition FACULTY OF BASIC MEDICAL SCIENCES DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY Programmes leading to PGD, M.Sc and Ph.D Degrees in Anatomy are available. PGD programme i. In addition to O-level requirement for admission into the University, the candidates for admission into the PGD programme in Anatomy must have at least a third class (Hons) degree in the subject of Anatomy of the University of Calabar or any other university approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar.

B.Sc second class degree in any related science discipline such as Physiology, Biochemistry, Animal Science, Radiography and Zoology from the University of Calabar or any other universities approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar. iii. NIST final certificate or its equivalent in Anatomy and Histophathology at credit level or above. M.Sc Programme i. The programme is open to candidates with first class honors or second class (Hons) with cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of not less than 3.00/5 in Anatomy of the University of Calabar or any other university offering B.Sc. Anatomy as approved by the Senate of the University of Calabar. Ph.D and MPhil programmes Candidates should have an M.Sc degree in his area of interest with Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 4.00/5 or 3.00/4. Candidates with CGPA less than 4.00/5 or 3.00/4 but not below 3.75/5 or 2.85/4 may be considered for the MPhil programme. ii. M.Sc. Programmes All applicants should have a minimum of second class B.Sc. degree in Physics, Geophysics, Electronics and any other relevant field with a minimum CGPA of 3.00 /5 or 2.75/4. Candidates with Post Graduate Diploma in Physics (PGDP) of the University of Calabar or other related fields with CGPA of 3.00/5 or 2.75/4 may be considered for admission. iii. Post Graduate Diploma programmes Candidate must have a minimum CGPA of 1.60 or better in related field. iv. In addition to the specified requirements for each programme, all candidates must possess a mi any other two science subjects. Holders of PGDs in the above areas including Environmental Education and Medical Microbiology & Parasitology with CGPAs not lower than 3.00 are also eligible to apply. MPhil/Ph.D Masters degree holders in the areas listed above (i.e. 1a-1f) with CGPA not upto 4.00/5 and 3.00/4 but more than or equal to 3.00/5 or 2.75/4 are qualified to apply. Ph.D Degree Candidates who have the entry qualifications for the M.Sc Degree in the areas listed above. In addition, holders of M.Sc (with thesis) of the University of Calabar or any other institution recognized by the Senate of the University of Calabar in relevant disciplines may apply. PGD irement for admission into the University of Calabar, candidates for PGD admission must have: i. NIST Final Certificate or equivalent (at credit level or above) ii. B.Sc 2 nd Class honours in any related science discipline (e.g. Biology) iii.
