6 GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING A RESEARCH PLAN FOR A DOCTORAL DISSERTATION/LICENTIATE THESIS A research plan of 3 to 5 pages must be enclosed to the application. The research plan should be accepted by the main supervisor and by the follow-up group. The research plan should cover the entire dissertation/thesis. If the subject of the dissertation/thesis or the mode of completion (e.g. from an article-based dissertation with articles published separately to a monograph) changes substantially, a new research plan should be submitted for approval to the Scientific Postgraduate Committee of the School of Health Sciences. 1. Title of the study In both Finnish and English 2. Background of the study Includes a short overview that describes the topic of the study 3. Aims of the study The aims should be confined and presented clearly (e.g. overall/detailed objectives) 4. Subjects and methods The study material formation and justification of its size Description of methods used for collection of data and data analyzing 5. Reporting of the study Type of dissertation (a monograph or an article-based dissertation) Division of sub-studies and description of study issues 6. Timetable of the study A timetable presenting the different phases of the study 7. Ethical issues Description of ethical aspects of the study and an estimate whether there is need for a statement by an ethical board 8. References The list of references according to the Guidelines for Doctoral Studies (the Study Guide appendix 3) The list of references must be encompassing and versatile

7 GUIDELINES FOR PREPARING A POSTGRADUATE STUDY PLAN The postgraduate study plan should be prepared in accordance with the degree requirements (see Postgraduate Study Guide) on a separate sheet of paper. The supervisor of the dissertation/thesis shall approve the intended coursework with his/her signature. In addition to the doctoral coursework offered by the School of Health Sciences, the applicant may choose courses from the courses of other Schools and from the Doctoral School at the University of Tampere as well as from national network programmes and international postgraduate training sessions. The Degrees of Doctor of Health Sciences, Doctor of Philosophy, Licentiate of Health Sciences and Licentiate of Philosophy should include general coursework, field-specific courses in the major subject and/or coursework in the minor subject of at least 60 ECTS. The Doctor of Medical Sciences (MD, PhD) degree should include general coursework and field-specific courses of at least 30 ECTS.
