3 SECTION 1: HANDBOOK School/Business Partnership Why is there a need for a School/Business Partnership? Develop a positive relationship between the school and community businesses. Provide opportunities for students to gain knowledge about career paths. Provide the community with graduates who are knowledgeable in fields within Washington and surrounding areas. Provide students with positive role models within our community. In what way can a business contribute to the partnership? Guest Speaker: Speak to a class on a topic related to an occupation/business to facilitate a connection between curriculum and the world of work. Tours: Allow students to tour the actual workplace. What is the process for engaging in a partnership? A teacher or School/Business Partnership Liaison will contact a place of business to participate in the School/Business Partnership program. A discussion will occur between the teacher and the business member to determine the goal and the expectations of the partnership. The Partnership Activity Form may be completed by the teacher in collaboration with the business partner to aid in planning the event. (See form on page 5.) 4 Teacher Checklist 1. Review curriculum to determine where School/Business Partnership activity would benefit students. 2. Convey desire to principal to engage in School/Business Partnership activity. 3. Contact School/Business Partnership member or Liaison to arrange activity. 4. Complete the School/Business Partnership Activity Form in collaboration with partnership member (if needed).* 5. Contact newspaper with date and time of event to provide media coverage. 6. Send Thank you note to School/Business Partnership member. School/Business Partnership Member Checklist 1. Once contact is made by school staff member, complete the School/Partnership Activity form in collaboration with the teacher (if necessary). 2. Upon arriving to the school, sign in at the office and obtain a visitor badge. Secretary will escort partner to the classroom.* 3. Present to the classroom. 4. Partner returns to the office to complete a short survey. This documentation will be utilized to evaluate the program. Secretaries will forward the survey to Steve Pryor at WHS for the secondary level or Kim Hunt at Washington West for the elementary level. 5. Partner signs out and exits the building. *Background checks are not necessary for guest speakers due to the teacher being present.

7 SECTION 2: DIRECTORY The School/Business Partnership Committee, utilizing an educational format for classifying occupations, professions, and organizations, reviewed the six hundred members of the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce and placed each in one of sixteen distinct clusters. Committee members then recruited contacts or representatives from each of the clusters to serve as liaisons between schools and businesses. If a teacher, counselor, or administrator has need for a speaker or presentation from a particular area, the volunteers listed below will facilitate the process. 15 Together, the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce, the School District of Washington, St. Francis Borgia Regional High School and Four Rivers Career Center are recognizing educators and businesspersons who partner to enhance curriculum and relevance of the learning experience. Following are the rules and nomination form for the Student/Business Partnership Award. Awards will be presented at Washington Area Chamber of Commerce s Annual Business Breakfast Meeting each January. ELIGIBILITY Nominees shall be an employee of a company or organization which holds a membership with the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce, paired with a private or public school educator within the boundaries of the School District of Washington. PROCEDURE A. Nominations are due in the Washington Area Chamber of Commerce office by November 1. B. Nominations shall consist of the Official Nomination Form, including the following three questions: What was the topic and/or nature of the interaction between business and students? Describe how, and why, this topic incorporated into the class curriculum? What was the impact on the class of this businessperson s involvement? C. The persons selected to receive awards will be notified to ensure attendance at the meeting. JUDGING Judging will be done by the BRIDGE (Student/Business Partnership) committee, which is comprised of members from the School District of Washington, St Francis Borgia Regional High School, Four Rivers Career Center, Washington Area Chamber of Commerce, and businesspersons at large. The committee reserves the right to determine additional persons for consideration.
