6 ACTIVITIES OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SEPARATION SCIENCE FOUNDATION RESEARCH AND TRAINING CENTER The main functions of the Mediterranean Separation Science Foundation - Research and Training Center are: - Permanent center for research in the separation science field - Basic and advanced training activities - Scientific formation of professional individualities - Summer advanced training courses - Center for instrumental demonstrations in collaboration with scientific instrumentation companies - Exchange of researchers with European and non-european countries - Training of Ph.D. and Post-Doctorate students with particular attention to the developing countries of the Mediteraneum area (North Africa and Eastern Europe). The foundation of a center dedicated to separation science research and teaching, would find an ideal location within the University of Messina, due to the expertise and knowledge already present within this university. The center would rely on both internal and external expertise, guarantying the periodical or continuous presence of 8

7 scientists that have given and still give a substantial contribution to the development of modern separation science. In this respect, several internationally renowned scientists have already given their consent. The center will be engaged in the development and diffusion of chromatographic knowledge, through research activities and the development of methods to be applied to different fields such as chemical, petrochemical, food and natural sample analysis, pharmaceutical and environmental analysis. Furthermore, the center will be involved in the development of innovative instrumentation, in collaboration with instrumental producers in this field. 9
