1 Advanced Technology choices: A checklist for choosing a master Warning: Not for all master programs next years requirements for admission are definite yet. In all cases it is advised to contact the master program for obtaining the details on the requirements. This document will be updated regularly to reflect the current status of the available information. Check the date on the top right of the page to see if this document is more recent than a previous version you downloaded. Choosing a Master program The third year of the AT program consists of four Modules. Three Modules can be chosen freely, within the boundaries set by the Board of Examiners. One Module is reserved for the BSc assignment. This means that in the second year every AT-student has to consider which master (s)he wants to proceed with after the BSc graduation. This master can be either at the University of Twente, at another University in the Netherlands or abroad. A description of the masters at the University of Twente can be found on the websites of the master programs. The requirements for admission to these master programs vary. A concise overview of the possibilities and requirements for the third year AT program can also be found below. Note, that depending on your goal and wishes it is often possible to make alternative arrangements for admission with the master of choice. This has to be discussed and agreed with the master program coordinator beforehand. If you choose to continue with a master at different University you will have to inform yourself about the admission requirements of that specific master program. It is expected (but not guaranteed) that master programs at other universities in comparable disciplines will also have comparable admission requirements. However, no guarantees, so check! The Board of Examiners has to approve the courses chosen for the third year in order to be eligible for an Advanced Technology Bachelors diploma. So it is wise to get a signed document from the master program (master agreement) that shows that you are admissible with your course list. The table below shows a list of UT master programs together with the modules required for admission. It is also indicated the modules are taught in English (E) or Dutch (NL). A (Y) indicates that the course is officially in Dutch, but it can probably be followed by non-dutch speaking students. Not all master programs and/or tracks are in the table. Also for some of the master programs no modules are specified. In these cases contact the master program coordinator for the specific requirement and possibilities. Contacting the master program coordinator is probably also a wise thing to do for all master programs! Study abroad It is possible to take courses at another university in your third year. Such courses can be admissible for your BSc AT diploma when they are approved by the Board of Examiners. As a guideline: courses that fit the Advanced Technology profile are acceptable. To determine this, you will have to provide the following information on each course: - Name of the course, lecturer(s), and EC s - Name of the institute and local course code - A description of the aim and content of the course It is strongly advised that you also check your courses with the Board of Examiners beforehand. When you return, you have to provide at least an authenticated transcript of your grades for registration in Osiris 1, but the Board may also require that you provide a copy of the examination and your work after returning. Course list, bachelor assignment and bachelor exam Once you have chosen a master program (it is strongly advised to do this before the end of your second year) you can start planning your third year. Inform yourself about the admission requirements and find out which are the compulsory and optional subjects/modules for your third year. Don t just assume that the subjects listed in the AT programme guide are still correct. There is a separate document containing a checklist with information on the steps to take in preparing your course list, selecting a bachelor assignment and requesting approval for the bachelor exam. There are separate documents for students that started before 2010 and students that started in 2010 and after.
2 In case you need (more) help compiling your course list, consult the AT study advisor. If you choose to continue with a master at the UT, have the form Request agreement for admission to the master programme signed by the master of your choice (it is not compulsory but we strongly advise you to do so). It guarantees that your choice of courses in the third year complies with the admission requirements of the master of your choice. Note about registration For some master programs the admission requirements are such that parts of modules are included in the program. Due to changes in the administrative process, a student that takes only part of a module in preparation for admission to the master should NOT register in the module. Instead you should mail your intention to [email protected]. Include the name and course code of the module and the part(s) that will be taken. BOZ will then register you with the correct replacement course and will also add you manually to the Bb site of the module so you have access to the relevant study information and materials. In Osiris the result will not be registered the module but under the replacement course. Table 1. Admission requirements for various master programs and specialisation. Where available the requirements are provided for the different specialisations of a master program. The specialisation names are specified on the left and the requirements on the right. Where available the program, block and teaching language is given. The teaching language is English (E) or Dutch (NL). A (Y) indicates that the course is officially in Dutch, but at this moment it is expected that the course can also be taken by English speaking students. The regular numbering system of the module consecutively from 1 to 12. This corresponds to the designations used in MyTimetable. Modules 1, 5 and 9 are taught in block 1A in the first, second and third year repectively; module 2, 6 and 10 are taught in block 1B, modules 3, 7 and 11 are taught in block 2A and modules 4, 8 and 12 are taught in block 2B. 2 1 In order to convert the grade obtained to the Dutch system it is often not enough to supply the transcript of records. For instance the grade A will not automatically be converted to a 10. For that additional information has to be supplied on the grading system. The information required is especially: 1. If the assessment is done on a relative or an absolute scale. 2. How often do specific grades occur? (frequency table). Ad 1. Relative : Absolute : for example the best 20% students get an A for an exam (where it would be possible that only 50% of the problems were answered correctly ) a score of more than 90% correct answers is needed to get an A. (the Dutch system is an example of an absolute grading system). Ad 2. Only 1.2% of the AT exams is rewarded with the grade 10. About 8% is awarded the grade 9. So, if a grading system rewards the top 10% with an A, this would be converted to a 9. In case of uncertainty of the grading system the lower grade interpretation will be used. In order to get an A converted to a 10 a frequency table is required that shows that the result belongs to the top 1% for the test in question. (it may not always be possible to get this information.) 2 There has been yet another numbering scheme in use for modules. There the modules are related to the year of the curriculum. Modules 1 4 correspond to modules in the first year, modules 5 8 correspond to modules in the second year and modules 9 12 correspond to modules in the third year.
