3 TO: TEACHER APPLICANTS WHO DID NOT COMPLETE A TEACHER EDUCATION PROGRAM Thank you for your interest in applying for a teaching position with the Mobile County Public School System. Mobile County is fully committed to staffing all schools with highly qualified teachers; therefore, applications are not being accepted for non-certified applicants in teaching fields of Social Studies/History/Psychology, PE, and Elementary Education. In core critical needs areas in which there are no applicants who are fully state certified, Mobile County will consider applicants who are eligible to apply for a certificate through alternative routes. To be considered for teaching positions in critical needs areas such as mathematics, science, and special education, you must meet the following requirements: Hold at least a bachelor s degree from a regionally accredited senior institution Minimum of GPA Must be eligible for Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate or Special Alternative Certificate Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate o At least 32 semester hours (19 of which must be upper-division level) in the field certification is sought or o Passing Praxis Score in the content area or - o Verify an earned bachelor s or higher degree with a non-education major in the academic area Special Alternative Certificate in Teaching Field o Must be admitted to the Alternative Fifth-Year Program in the teaching field o Must submit a Planned Program for Certification in the teaching field o Special Education applicants must have 12 semester hours in each of the following: English Language Arts, Social o Science, Mathematics, and General Science Applicants enrolling in the Special Alternative Master s Program at USA must have passing scores on the basic skills assessment (You may register for the required basic skills assessments online at Proof of registration for the regional assessments of the Alabama Prospective Teacher Testing Program (You may register for the required basic skills assessment (reading, writing, and math) online at You may register for the appropriate Praxis II subject assessments online at Must meet any additional local/state requirements If you meet the requirements above, you should complete the on-line application. 11 MOBILE COUNTY PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM BENEFITS FOR FULL-TIME EMPLOYEES All full-time employees of the Mobile County Public School System will receive the following annual benefits: SICK LEAVE: SICK LEAVE BANK: PERSONAL LEAVE: OTHER LEAVES: 1 Day per month or equivalent All employees are eligible to participate. 2 Days per year unless: - Starting work after December 31 Employee entitled to 1 personal day for school year; - Starting work after March 31 Employee entitled to 0 personal days for school year. Maternity leave, professional leave, military leave, emergency leave, Family Medical leave and/or legal leave will be granted to employees as circumstances merit. ANNUAL LEAVE FOR 12 MONTH (260 Day) EMPLOYEES HIRED ON OR AFTER JULY 1, 1999: (Service is defined as service in the Mobile County Public School System) 5 Days per school year with 11 months of service or less; 10 Days per school year with months of service; 15 Days per school year with months of service; 20 Days per school year with months of service. HEALTH INSURANCE: Employees may choose between the following health insurance plans: - PEEHIP - (Blue Cross/Blue Shield); - HMO s - (Health Spring of AL, Viva); - In addition, four supplemental plans are available: - Dental - Hospital Indemnity - Cancer - Vision LIFE INSURANCE: RETIREMENT: - $ 8,000 Free Life Insurance plan from MCPSS - $ 15,000 Free Life Insurance plan from the Teacher s Retirement Systems of Alabama (must be in pay status to be eligible). All employees of the MCPSS will have 5% of their wages deducted each month and deposited into the Teacher s Retirement System: BENEFITS: - Vested after 10 years of service; - Retirement at age 60 with years of service; - Retirement at any age after 25 years of service. CREDIT FOR MILITARY SERVICE : A member has one year from the date he/she enrolled in the TRS to make a lump sum payment in order to gain credit for up to four years of eligible military service. Weekend service and summer camp service with the National Guard and the Reserves are not eligible for creditable service. The cost is 4% of the average salary paid a teacher during each year of claimed service plus 8% interest compounded from the last date of service to the date of payment.
