3 Alternative Certificate Options and Overview Alternative certificates may only be requested by an employing Alabama county/city superintendent or eligible non-public school administrator. An individual should contact the school system or eligible nonpublic school in which employment is desired for information concerning certificate eligibility. Information about currently approved alternative certificate approaches is updated periodically and interested candidates are advised to frequently review the options/information accessible on the Alabama State Department of Education website, Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate (ABC) approach is for K-12 and 6-12 teaching fields. A certificate may be requested in certain teaching fields for an individual who has met requirements of the AECTP and has earned at least a bachelor s degree with an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.50 on a 4.0 scale, from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned. The required GPA must be the official overall GPA as defined by the degree-granting institution and as posted on the official transcript of the degree-granting institution. Career and Technical Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate (CT ABC) approach is for 6-12 teaching fields. A certificate may be requested in certain teaching fields for an individual who has met requirements of the AECTP and has earned at least a bachelor s degree with an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 2.50 on a 4.0 scale, from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned. The required GPA must be the official overall GPA as defined by the degree-granting institution and as posted on the official transcript of the degree-granting institution. Emergency Certificate approach is a one year certificate which cannot be renew or reissued and does not lead to Alabama professional certification. A certificate may be requested for an individual who has earned at least a bachelor s degree from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned. Preliminary Certificate approach is for Library Media, School Counseling, or Speech or Language Impairment individuals who have met requirements of the AECTP and have earned at least a master s degree (in the specific area) with an overall grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale, from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned. The required GPA must be the official overall GPA as defined by the degree-granting institution and as posted on the official transcript of the degree-granting institution. Preliminary Certificate Through Exception approach may be requested in Driver and Traffic Safety Education, Instructional Leadership, 6-12 or P-12 Teaching Fields, or School Counseling for an individual who has met requirements of the AECTP and has earned a degree in the specific area with the specified overall grade point average (GPA), from a senior institution that was regionally accredited at the time the degree was earned. The required GPA must be the official overall GPA as defined by the degree-granting institution and as posted on the official transcript of the degree-granting institution. A request for this certificate may only be considered for an individual who is not eligible for certification the requested area through any other alternative, reciprocal, or traditional approach. Special Alternative Certificate (SAC) approach is for those (1) unconditionally admitted to an Alternative Class A program provided by an Alabama college or university; or (2) those unconditionally admitted to a Traditional Class A Program provided by an Alabama college or 3

4 university in an area of special education, English for Speakers of Other Language, Instructional Leadership, Library Media, School Counseling, and Reading Specialist; or (3) those unconditionally admitted to a Traditional Class AA Program provided by an Alabama college or University in an area of Special Education; or (4) those unconditionally admitted to a Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP) accredited program in School Counseling at an Alabama university. The individual must have met all requirements of the AECTP and has been unconditionally admitted to an Alabama State-approved program. 5 Alternative Baccalaureate-Level Certificate Approach Individuals who have never been certified and are employed must follow all steps through their employing board of education for the Alternative Baccalaureate Certificate (ABC) approach. UM offers four courses on a space available basis, which may only be taken upon submission/ verification of the ABC Certificate and official transcripts verifying a 2.50 overall GPA from the institution where the degree was issued. When verification of the ABC Certificate is unavailable, the LEA Certification Officer should send an to Rebecca Lynn Rayl (rrayl@montevallo.edu) or a letter to University of Montevallo, TES Station 6352, Montevallo, Alabama 35115) which includes the following information: Name of applicant Statement of intent to hire (include school name and school system name) Applicant s potential teaching/instruction assignment to include teaching field and grade level(s) If the individual meets ABC Certificate criteria, then the individual should apply for admission as an Enrichment/Non-Degree Seeking Student through the Office of Graduate Admissions and Records. Courses must be completed within three years of issuance of the initial certificate and may be taken at more than one Alabama college or university. Coursework requirements: Classroom Management ED 418 Classroom Management (2 hours) Evaluation EDF 462 Measurement and Evaluation in Secondary Education (3 hours) Special Education SPED 407 Exceptional Learners in the P-12 and Secondary Programs (3 hours) Methods (pick applicable course for teaching field area and grade level) ED 435 Teaching Foreign Language at the Secondary Level (1 hour) ED 535 Teaching Art at the Secondary Level (1 hour) ED 536 Teaching English/Language Arts at the Secondary Level (1 hour) ED 537 Teaching General Science at the Secondary Level (1 hour) ED 538 Teaching Math at the Secondary Level (1 hour) ED 539 Teaching Social Science at the Secondary Level (1 hour) ED 540 Teaching Business at the Secondary Level (1 hour) ED 541 Teaching Family and Consumer Science at the Secondary Level (1 hour) KNES 430 Middle and Secondary Methods of teaching Physical Education (3 hours) Notes: Information about currently approved ABC courses at Alabama institutions is updated periodically and interested candidates are advised to frequently review the lists of approved ABC courses accessible on the ALSDE website, 5

6 Special Alternative Certificate Approach A Special Alternative Certificate (SAC) allows a superintendent or administrator to employ an applicant who is completing requirements for Class A certification in a teaching field through a State-approved Alternative Class A, Class A, or Class AA program at an Alabama institution. Additional information, including requirements and restrictions, is provided in Rule and Rule ( Special Alternative Certificate for Elementary Education or Collaborative Special Education K-6 A teacher who is employed based on holding a valid Special Alternative Certificate for elementary education (or collaborative special education K-6) and is teaching at the lower elementary level (grades K, 1, 2, and/or 3) may, at the discretion of the unit, complete a three semester hour practicum at the upper elementary level (grades 4, 5, and/or 6) to meet the internship requirements applicable to the elementary education (or collaborative special education K-6) program. Similarly, a teacher who is employed based on holding a valid Special Alternative Certificate for elementary education (or collaborative special education K-6) and is teaching at the upper elementary level may, at the discretion of the unit, complete a three semester hour practicum at the lower elementary level to meet the internship requirements applicable to the elementary education (or collaborative special education K-6) program. Special Alternative Certificate for Teaching Fields A teacher who is employed based on holding a valid Special Alternative Certificate for a teaching field that spans Grades P-12 and is teaching at the elementary level (K-6) may, at the discretion of the unit, complete a three semester hour practicum at the secondary level (6-12) to meet the internship requirements applicable to the P-12 program. Similarly, a teacher who is employed based on holding a valid Special Alternative Certificate for a teaching field that spans Grades P-12 and is teaching at the secondary level (6-12) may, at the discretion of the unit, complete a three semester hour practicum at the elementary level to meet the internship requirements applicable to the P-12 program. Special Alternative Certificate for Collaborative Special Education (K-6 or 6-12) A teacher who is employed based on holding a valid Special Alternative Certificate for collaborative special education teacher (K-6) or (6-12) and who is enrolled in a collaborative special education program for both K-6 and 6-12 but whose employment is limited to the grade span for which certification is held may, at the discretion of the unit, complete a three semester hour practicum at the level for which certification is not held to meet the internship requirements applicable to both programs. 6

7 Special Alternative Certificate Procedures Only currently enrolled UM students will be eligible for a Special Alternative Certificate (SAC). All documents (official transcripts, test scores, Consent to Release Transcript(s) form, etc.) needed for the SAC must be on file with TES before a SA1 will be completed. Special Alternative Certificate Procedures The LEA Certification Officer should send an to Rebecca Lynn Rayl (rrayl@montevallo.edu) or a letter to University of Montevallo, TES Station 6352, Montevallo, Alabama 35115) which includes the following information: Name of applicant Statement of intent to hire (include school name and school system name) Applicant s potential teaching/instruction assignment to include teaching field and grade level(s) Address where the SA1 should be mailed If the applicant meets all certification requirements, then the Supplement SA1 will be prepared and sent with all supporting documents to the LEA Certification Officer. After the LEA receives the completed packet from UM, the LEA will attach it to the rest of the application packet and mail it in to the ALSDE and to TES (University of Montevallo, TES Station 6352, Montevallo, Alabama 35115) (with all required signatures). 7
