1 Atlanta Public Schools Ralph J. Bunche Middle School Counselors Are Building a Better Bunche Guidance Plan Submitted by Vernita E. Byrd and Tracey Fisher In order to meet the growing needs of the 21 st century child, we will look at the whole child which extends itself to a much broader scope than what the counselors, social workers and staff can do. We will call for the support of programs that manifest in the many initiatives that we have worked so closely with, in an effort to promote academic performance and social wellness.

STRATEGIC GOALS Improve overall school culture and climate amongst students, teachers, administrators, and support staff Creation and implementation of a school-wide focus on customer service, with standards and expectations for all stakeholders A schoolwide focus on high quality daily instruction emphasizing research-based instructional practices, student-focused engagement, rigor, differentiated instruction and the consistent use of data for instructional planning Creation and implementation of a teacher driven schoolwide professional learning community to emphasis teacher empowerment and personal accountability for collaborative professional growth On-going weekly professional development emphasizing research based instructional best practices needed to implement the common core curriculum School-wide transitional shift towards understanding the importance of the College and Career Readiness Index and its impact on instructional decision making School wide focus on the use of common assessment data as a gateway towards understanding student mastery and planning for instruction Academic focus on the following CRCT test goals Increase the number of students of 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students that exceed on the April, 2014 ELA, READING, and MATH CRCT Decrease the number of student 6 th, 7 th and 8 th grade students that do not meet expectations on the April 2014 ELA, READING, SCIENCE and SOCIAL STUDIES CRCT

3 Ralph J. Bunche Middle School Guidance Plan I. Foundations Philosophy The Guidance and Counseling department will abide by the standards established by the Georgia Department of Education and the Atlanta Public School System (Strategic Plan Strategic Initiative Student Engagement and Behavior Data Governance). A comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Plan can provide advocacy and leadership to support equity in educational opportunities for all students and nurture their hopes, dreams, goals and aspirations. Each student is unique and special in his or her own way possessing a positive self-worth in becoming a productive citizen in our global society. Effective counselors collaborate with school staff, parents, and community members to ensure academic success in providing students with the ultimate preparation in meeting the challenges of the 21 st century. Assessment, prevention, intervention and referrals are the foundation of a comprehensive school counseling and guidance program. Each student will assume complete responsibility in making positive choices related to his or her education. Mission Statement The mission of Ralph J. Bunche Middle School is to prepare academic success by providing a school counseling program that promotes academic, personal /emotional, social growth and cultural needs of all students. Students will be provided the opportunity to develop the understanding of self and the appreciation of others. Bunche counselors will meet with students through classroom guidance, groups, individually and will provide educational and occupational career exploration as we advance through the 21 st century. Partnerships with mentors, community leaders and business partners will help students become lifelong learners and productive citizens within their communities. Through effective, challenging daily, learning experiences will R.I.S.E. to new heights of excellence in student achievement. Ultimately, students will become critical thinkers, developing a positive self-image in a safe and nurturing environment. State Standards The Georgia Department of Education Guidance and Counseling Curriculum is organized to help students develop competencies in the following areas:1.) academic achievement, 2.) career planning and 3.) personal/social development. The competencies are outline in Georgia s K-12 Curriculum Guide.

4 II. Delivery System Guidance Curriculum The guidance curriculum consists of organized, comprehensive, proactive and developmental lessons/activities which are designed to assist students in achieving the desired competencies and that provide all students with the knowledge and skills appropriate for their developmental level. Individual Student Planning The counselors will collaboratively with teachers, graduation coach, and behavior specialist to identify the barriers and obstacles that may be hindering the academic success of some students and advocate to eliminate these barriers. The counselors will provide individual counseling for those infractions and /or interpersonal needs. These students will be scheduled for one- to-one session during the week. The counselors will: Identify those students with repeated discipline infractions for individual/group counseling services and assistance through the Behavior Support Program-Counselor, Social Worker and Behavior Specialist Provide individual/ group and classroom guidance on effective decision making. Meet with the Discipline Team/Behavior Specialist and teachers to discuss appropriate strategies to meet the needs of these identified students. Counselors will assist students in their transition from elementary to middle and middle to high school and increase their participation in career exploratory experiences The counselor will: Provide 5 th grade feeder school students with an effective transition through the WEST CLUSTER TRANSITION Program to navigate successfully to middle school Grade level academic requirements for progression to the next grade level

5 Fifth grade feeder school transition Shadow Days Fifth grade Meet and Greet Parent Nights 5 th grade visitation from Bunche staff/ students Selection of Connection Classes Bridge Build Law/ GA. 411 Summer Bridge Program for rising 6 th students coming to Bunche will be provided through the After School Program REACH - Making A Smooth Transition to the Middle The counselor will: Provide 8 th grade students with a comprehensive high school transition program as they make the transition to high school with the selection of appropriate small schools at Therrell High School. Meet with Therrell High WEST CLUSTER counselors to plan a high school transition program for parents and students Grade level Administration / Counselor,Graduation Coach and Behavior Specialist will work collaboratively to provide /Transition Nights /Informational Parent Night to discuss the transition process/curriculum for in-coming 9 th graders Grade level academic requirements for progression to the next grade level Set timeline for completing applications for small school selection Meet with parents individually (upon request)to discuss high transformation information, with reference to requirements for entering high school i.e., CRCT, and other required test for students, Bridge Build Law/ GA. 411 Jump Start Summer Transition Program for in-coming 9 th grade Move On When Your Ready Classroom Guidance is an integral part of the counseling. Systematic planned classroom guidance will be scheduled to all grade levels 6 th -8 th with emphasis on: Self- understanding Interpersonal relations Expressing ideas Gathering and processing information Rights and responsibilities Valuing and decision making Achievement motivation Problem solving

6 Abstinence Awareness Guidance Counseling implemented through: Technology awareness through career exploration in the computer lab through GA Bridge Build Law Guidance activities using career interest surveys Grade levels 6 th -8 th will be given basic orientation to career cruising through GA.411 Provide College Expo/Career Day/College and Career Index(College and Career Motivation Week-November 18-22, 2013) JA -Partnership with Junior Achievement allowing students to receive career exploration experiences pertaining to the world of work JAMS Program-Individual sessions provided for students to experience the exploration of the world of work-public Library-Cascade (program to be implemented at Bunche) Introduce and provide overview of the Bridge Build Law -GA. 411 Information system which provides the latest information on careers. This individualized program will provide assistance for students in making career choices. Career Awareness through Junior Achievement Biz Town-Grade-6th and Finance Park Grade 7th Culture Experience field trips for 6 th - 8 th graders Group Guidance is used in middle school to discuss immediate problems and issues particular to small groups of six to eight students. Students are referred by a counseling referral form by anyone who can see the student as needing the service: Group setting of 6 to 8 students with counselor Effective topics with response to referrals i.e. death and dying Commonalities (divorce, learning, self-esteem, grief, conflict resolution Letters to parent sent home for permission Responsive Services Responsive services consist of needs and major concerns of students. Usually these students initiate the referral. These needs of students may require counseling, consultations, referral or information. It is most important that the entire staff support the concerns of these students. Responsive services may be delivered through: Consultation Personal Counseling

7 Crisis Counseling Referrals-outside agencies System Support The counselor will serves as a resource consultant coordinating programs for staff, students, services, programs and initiatives along with community outside agencies. The counseling department schedules all students on Infinite Campus Bunche website will be developed to incorporate counseling updates for parents and students III. Management Agreements The management agreement involves the total Guidance Plan which is the standard by which the Guidance Counseling Program adheres to. Performance Base Data Driven Students at Bunche Middle are assessed for student performance through Computer Adaptive Testing and CRCT scores, which students are placed in classes to meet student s individual deficiencies. Students are given differentiated learning in areas of remediation in preparation for standardized testing. Interpretation of test data is used to assist students, parents, and staff when scheduling students in classes. The immediate concern for the use of data is to use learning styles and inventories to assess student achievement and its increase. Students scoring 850 and higher in math are offered (Accelerated Honors Math) classes. Planning the Year The guidance counseling department will outline its yearly calendar in an effort to plan with efficiency to ensure the counseling program will be time efficient and effective: Prioritize counseling responsibilities that are pertinent to counseling duties and responsibilities Follow the yearly calendar that are specific to the counseling plan Scheduled posted events for the counseling department Monthly classroom guidance topics that focus on academic success Interpersonal skills, study skills and test taking strategies Decision-making skills, career development and bullying Small groups are planned on a need basis

8 Structure The guidance and counseling plan supports the goals and objectives outlined in the Balance Scorecard Performance Evaluation Plan written for Bunche. Bunche Middle School has over 700 students. The Ralph J. Bunche Guidance and Counseling Department Bunche Middle School has two counselors; one for 6 th grade and 7 th grade Team B, one for 8 th grade and 7 th grade -Team A. School counselors are responsible for implementing all counseling services which include but not limited to conflict resolution, anger management, exhibiting good character traits, peer conflict resolution, drug awareness, no place for hate, improving study skills, coping skills, strong values, improving self - esteem and promoting good hygiene practices. The counseling department takes a proactive strategy on assessing the needs of Bunche Middle School students. We work very closely with the parent liaison and are available to all stakeholders including, parents, students, teachers, administrators and community members. Advisory Council The guidance counselors serve as a member of the Leadership Advisory Council for the school. Community members, students, parents, administration and staff will serve as the advisory council for the school in hopes of planning and discussing the growing needs of the school. Use of Data Students at Bunche Middle are assessed for student performance through Computer Adaptive Testing and CRCT scores, which students are placed in classes to meet student s individual deficiencies. Students are given differentiated learning in areas of remediation in preparation for standardized testing. Use of failure rates of students to determine appropriate levels of support for academic success. Counseling program evaluation will be done at the end of the year for teachers and students using the CCRPI Content Mastery Goals for Bunche. Action Plans Calendar Monthly guidance topics will be provided for classroom guidance topics that focus on academic success, interpersonal skills, study skills and test taking strategies, decision-making skills, career development and ant-bullying. Small groups will be planned on a need basis upon request.

Accountability is School counselors are held accountable by the (GSCPE), Georgia School Counselor Program Evaluation, which is completed and reviewed by the principal. Counselors are required to complete a monthly counseling report with a cumulative yearly report for accountability. A needs assessment is administered at the beginning of the year to the staff to assess the needs to be addressed for the school year. School counselor s yearly performance on pre/post evaluation reviewed as well. All counselors have been involved in the formulation of this plan. 11 Atlanta Public Schools GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING INDIVIDUAL PLAN OF ACTION School Year Every APS school counseling program must include data-driven activities that address components of the ASCA National Model for Comprehensive Guidance as well as the APS Consolidated School Improvement Plan goals of each school. Essential Questions Questions that frame your decisions regarding the services of the counseling program Did your school meet all CCRPI targets during the school year? No If not, what were the areas of concern? There was a significant achievement gap between students with disabilities and non-disable students as reported on the Bunche Middle School Value Added Report Measurable Goals Identify 3 measurable goals that the counselor will work towards this year to help your school reach AYP status (i.e. Improve attendance rate for targeted students by 10%) Goal # 1 Monitor student discipline through the Behavior Student Action Program. Identify the targeted group of students and conduct guidance sessions to address their needs by 10 %. Goal #2 Monitor student progress mid quarter/semester report cards to ensure that students who are struggling in core classes take advantage of tutorial opportunities that are currently offered through: remedial classes, the Reach After-School Program on Monday, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays and monitor attendance through collaboration Goal #3 Academic focus on CRCT test goals for students with disabilities : Increase the number of students of 6 th, 7 th and 8 th showing an increase on CRCT in Reading, ELA, and Math by10%. Goal #3 Academic focus on CRCT test goals for gifted students: Increase the number of students 6 th, 7th and 8 th grade students that do not meet or exceed expectations on the CRCT in Reading, ELA, Science and Social Studies by 10%. Intentional Guidance Activities List specific, data driven guidance activities that will be conducted to support identified goals during the school year Goal #1 Increase positive attitudes that promote academic achievement measured by growth on the CRCT-April, 2014 through classroom guidance sessions, small group sessions and individual counseling sessions that are designed to assist students in the acquisition of the attitudes, basic knowledge / skills that will help to contribute to effective learning in the 21 st century. Goal #2 Counselor will assist students in their transition from middle to high school and increase their participation in career exploratory awareness experiences as measured by the CCPRI index. Goal #3 Decrease the number discipline referrals and suspensions reported to the administration by 10%.
