2 CTE Course: Graphic Design Academic Course(s): American Government Unit Name: Community Service Opportunity Lesson Name: Community Service Informational Bulletin Lesson Synopsis: In an effort to increase student understanding of, and involvement in, civic duties and responsibilities, a BCHS school resources board displaying community service and volunteer opportunities will be created by American Government students and Graphic Design students. Government students will search for volunteer opportunities within the surrounding community. Students will research the needs of the organization, requirements of volunteers, contact information for potential volunteers and other essential information needed to establish a volunteer relationship with various organizations. Graphics design students examine design elements of promotional material. Using the information gathered by the government students the graphic design students will create an appropriate promotional flyer for the school resource board. Time Frame: CTE course - 5 hours (5 class periods) Academic Course(s) 3 hours (3 class periods) Objectives: CTE course Graphic Design o To create informational posters advertising opportunities for community services to be posted to a school bulletin board that will serve as a resource for volunteer opportunities for various school clubs and classes. o Examine the elements of design o Produce a product for print using Computer based tools o The student will understand the important of volunteerism o The student will create a flyer promoting volunteer opportunities o The student will identify community organizations that have a need for volunteers. o To create a school bulletin board that will serve as a resource for volunteer opportunities for various school clubs and classes Standards: CTE course Graph Design 17.1 Select and communicate information in an appropriate digital format 17.4 Design, produce and evaluate a communication product using technology 17.6 Use computer-based tools to create printed media products S3PO3aThe student will make the connection between self-interest, the common good and the essential element of civic virtue. S3PO3The student will examine the basic social responsibility of citizenship

4 Learning Structures/Strategies CTE Course Set for Interest Various informational flyers promoting events/organizations soliciting volunteers will be presented to students. Students will rank the flyers, based on the elements of design, from best design to weakest. Results will be tallied and class discussion will focus on the elements that were present in both the weakest and strongest flyer. Input/Modeling Product advertisements and service advertisements examples will be shown. Discussion on each type of example including description, differences between each and explanations of good elements of each. Check for Understanding Students will submit a checklist for approval prior to beginning the mockup. Students will submit mockup for approval prior to beginning the final product. Guided Practice Product advertisements and service advertisements examples will be shown. Students will compare each type of advertisements and complete a vein diagram noting the similarities and differences of each type of advertisement. Class will discuss what the purpose of a service advertisement is. Students will be assigned a community service text document from the American Government students. Students will be given Information Posters guidelines handout, which includes checklist or required elements and rubric. Independent Practice Students will evaluate text document and transfer basic information to their guidelines handout. Students will determine what information is missing or incomplete and use internet resources to complete the necessary information. Teacher will confirm that the checklist is complete. Students will create mockup of the advertisement and submit for approval. Students will use Adobe Photoshop or Adobe Illustrator to complete the final product advertisement. Closure Students will complete a gallery walk. All students will post complete work. Each student will choose their favorite three final product and evaluate them using a given rubric. Assessment Final project will be assessed using a rubric. Assessed elements will include: Color, creativity, purpose of organization clearly present, theme present.

5 Learning Structures/Strategies Academic Course(s) Set for Interest Students will view short video clip showing how volunteerism and community service impacts a community. Students will respond to a written prompt asking them to reflect on the importance of volunteerism and how it has impacted their lives. As a class students will complete a checklist of necessary items that would be needed to get started in being a community volunteer. Input/Modeling Projects from previous students will be presented to students. Class will evaluate the example projects. Sample informational flyer will be presented Check for Understanding Using the modeled projects the class will determine what information would have been necessary for the student to have prior to starting the service project. Class will also discuss what can happen if this information is valid and complete. Guided Practice Students will be search internet sources, including volunteermatch.org to find organizations and events that are requesting volunteers in the surrounding communities. Students will pick one organization/event to create an informational flyer for. The chosen organization/event will be written on the classroom white board. Each student will pick an organization/event that has not been chosen Independent Practice Students will be given template of flyer using Microsoft word and the internet sources available. Students will locate the following information: Name of organization, contact person, necessary skills, duties of the volunteer, location of event/organization, hours and dates of needed service and logo of organization/event. Student will organize information and type into Microsoft document. Student will print out save and print final copy. Closure All flyers (word) documents will be collected, placed into three ring binder to be used as the classroom resource and made available in a central location in the classroom. Students will assess five flyers. Each student will rank the five flyers and rank them in the order from most likely to volunteer to least likely to volunteer. Assessment Each flyer will be assessed using a rubric. The assessed elements include all required elements present and appropriateness of volunteer opportunity.
