Innovate!HamptonRoads is a critical component of Vision and created by a transformation of the decade-old Hampton Roads Research Partnership. The mission of Innovate!HamptonRoads is to promote locally-grown business, technologybased economic development in Hampton Roads so the region is recognized internationally for clusters of excellence, fueled by a culture of innovation, entrepreneurship and economic and educational opportunities. The Goals of Innovate!HamptonRoads are to: Stimulate high growth-potential new business formation, Accelerate the growth of our existing tech businesses and Increase the commercialization of research innovation. Partners include higher education and institutional research, federal facilities of NASA Langley Research Center and the Department of Energy s Jefferson Lab, the nonprofit National Institute of Aerospace, technology businesses, the region s technology council, Technology Hampton Roads, and the region s economic development entities and workforce investment boards. What is it all about? Bringing the Regional Tech Incubators together with the Tech Business Clusters (Aerospace, Bio-science, Coastal Energy, Modeling & Simulation, Robotics, Sensors) to connect ideas, entrepreneurs and capital. This network is shored up through business and entrepreneurial support, university and business partnerships, and finally forums and networking, including peer-to-peer and virtual, and physical infrastructure. 3 Aerospace Cluster Description - The aerospace cluster heritage traces its origins to the nation s first civilian aeronautics lab (present day NASA Langley Research Center) where the original seven astronauts trained. NASA Langley s mission includes a large propensity for broad research and applications span the areas of aeronautics, atmospheric science and space launch. Specialized areas include aerodynamics, structures & materials, avionics, air traffic management, systems analysis, remote and in-situ sensing, and modeling and simulation (M&S). 6 Modeling & Simulation Cluster Description - Hampton Roads is a national leader in Modeling and Simulation (M&S). The discipline of M&S supports complex decision making and training and time and cost savings in military and commercial applications. M&S combines the development of mathematical models of real world conditions and running combinations of what if scenarios to extract useful decision support data. Much activity has centered around Department of Defense related programs with growth and expansion into the fields of medical, emergency management and transportation, etc. M&S jobs pay more than double the average regional salary.
