1 Aerospace & Defense Industry Profile Colorado Springs 2014

2 Aerospace & Defense Industry Cluster Colorado Springs and the region provide an established, strong contractor base to aerospace & defense operations. As the military presence in Colorado Springs has grown over the past 60 years, so too has the number of aerospace, defense, information technology, and data networking/storage contractors to sustain operational capability. Colorado Springs 2013 The Pikes Peak region encompasses a diverse and vibrant military presence unique to only a very few locations in the United States. The region is not only home to five military installations, making Colorado Springs a vibrant economy for the Aerospace and Defense industry, but also home to operations of the North American Aerospace Defense Command, U.S. Northern Command, Air Force Space Command, U.S. Army Space & Missile Defense Command/Army Strategic Command, Missile Defense Integrated Operations Center, U.S. Air Force Academy, Joint Functional Component Command/Integrated Missile Defense, and the National Security Space Institute. Their missions range from training and educating tomorrow s Air Force leaders, and Space Professionals for all our services, to fighting the Global War on Terrorism and maintaining vigilance for Homeland Defense and Security. Colorado has the second largest space economy in the U.S. The State s aerospace industry has critical mass with over 55,000 workers, including 26,000 plus private employees. - The Pikes Peak region has over 100 aerospace and defense, and over 200 high-tech companies, operating in the region. - In addition to highly skilled personnel, Colorado enjoys a significant industrial base from all major aerospace and defense communities. Many of the tools, equipment, software, and technologies required are developed in Colorado s Front Range High Tech Corridor ranging from Boulder to Pueblo. Many of these companies have Sensitive Compartmented Information Facility (SCIF) space to conduct the highly classified Air Force Cyber Command mission work. Further, significant investments have been made in Colorado Springs by major corporations such as Northrop Grumman Corporation, Aerospace Corporation, Boeing, Raytheon, Science Applications International Corporation, and Lockheed Martin. Additionally, Colorado Springs procurement and contracting has always been extremely small business friendly, thereby fostering a brisk group of extremely skilled, cleared, and viable small businesses supporting key defense missions. 3 Education Resources Educational programs and intellectual capital are abundant in the Pikes Peak region. Colorado Springs is home to an established, highly-collaborative network of academic and research institutions. Universities offer associates through PhD degrees and public-private requirements-based research directly supportive of Information Assurance and Cyber Security. In addition, mature and productive relationships with the United States Air Force (including the Air Force Academy, Air Force Space Command, and Air Force Office of Scientific Research), United States Northern Command, and other defense and security agencies foster partnered advances in Information Assurance and related fields. Colorado Springs 2013 This broad-based education system of public, private, and proprietary institutions of higher learning works cooperatively in many areas. The network provides degrees in area critical to Cyber Command. These include: Associate degrees in computer system security with new programs under development at the community college level. Bachelor degrees in computer system security, computer science, software engineering, electrical engineering, information technology, project management, cyber crime investigation, innovation and strategic planning. Master degrees in information system security, computer system security software engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, IT/Project Management, information system management, information assurance, and cryptography. Doctoral degrees in computer science, enterprise information systems, engineering, homeland security and management. Colorado s universities and research facilities are turning ideas into discoveries and making breakthroughs with significant worldwide impact. Several companies across a variety of industries have gotten their start as a result of tech transfer activities at area universities. In 2010, more than $1.9 billion in research funding poured into the region s universities and research centers from NASA and other government and private sources. The University of Colorado (CU-Boulder) attracted $359.1 million in research awards, Colorado State University in Fort Collins tallied $253.8 million in research funding. CU-Boulder ranked second among U.S. public universities for NASA research money received in The United States Air Force Academy has 20 research centers and institutes focused on topics like Cyberspace, Space Systems, Space Physics, Atmospheric research and modeling & simulation, exceeding $60 million annually.
