16 Center for Power Electronic Systems Virginia Tech CPES is working to expand power electronics systems integration to a wide range of next generation energy efficient and environmentally friendly applications across a range of power levels (milliwatt to megawatt). VT/CPES awarded the first National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center grant in power electronics 10 years ago. Total investment over $35M. Yearly funding from industry exceeds $1.5M and total funding is close to $4M. CPES has 96 industrial affiliates from all sectors of the power industry. The Sustainable Building Initiative began on July 1, 2009 and includes the development of a local smart grid that includes distributed wind and solar energy sources, highpower converters, and computer-controlled load management.
