17 Entrepreneurship Education across Community Colleges in the United States The first courses in entrepreneurship education started in early 70s 70s. Target markets: 1. Students enrolled in credit and non-credit 2. Potential and existing small business owners Of the 1193 community colleges in the United States*: 66% (794) offer at least one course in entrepreneurship 14% (169) offer an associate degree in entrepreneurship 19% (228) offer a certificate in entrepreneurship 55% (659) offer entrepreneurship as continuing education 26% (309) offer a program in entrepreneurship 20% (245) host a small business development center *2007 Study conducted by University of Illinois at Urbana

Several have elected to double major in their chosen industry degree and entrepreneurship (or at least obtain a certificate in entrepreneurship).

Measure success from the outset Integrate with standard tools capture intent-to-graduate and number of graduates

22 National Averages for new job growth 1% comes from companies moving into an area 55% comes from existing businesses expanding 44% comes from new startups. 60% of new start ups fail within the first five years. Startup companies that go through incubators have a 90% survival rate for the first 3 years. Companies that successfully graduate from incubators, 87% are still in business 5 years later, 84% are still in the community they incubated in. Source: National Business Incubation Association
