1 My name is Jason C. White, currently a PhD candidate in the Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy at The Ohio State University with an expected defense date in Summer I am writing to request consideration as a participant in the Doctoral Consortium at this year s upcoming USASBE conference. The call for applicants requests doctoral students who have completed approximately two to three years of their PhD program, have finished coursework and are preparing a dissertation proposal focused on some area of entrepreneurship. Given my arts entrepreneurshipfocused dissertation research agenda, I am confident that I would greatly benefit from both attending and gaining feedback on my research study via consortium activities. The title of my dissertation study is The State of Arts Entrepreneurship in Ohio: Generating nascent data for informing entrepreneurship policy in creative and cultural industries. The study centers on discovering micro/ meso/macro level factors that influence new venture creation within specified artistic fields (i.e. arts-based ventures); an interdisciplinary research agenda largely undertaken in an effort to inform entrepreneurship policy in creative & cultural industries. Scholars on entrepreneurship policy (Lundström & Stevenson) suggest that informed policy be based on research that evidences critical factors affecting the policy target, as well as existing opportunities to influence certain elements to produce desired outcomes. Within the context of the arts, entrepreneurship policy options may equate to the following government, community or artist-driven activities: activities focused on improving access to both arts-based venture support services and cultural arts funding (e-extension policy); activities that reduce barriers to entry and exit in creative and cultural industries (new firm creation or business start-up policy); activities focused on increasing entrepreneurial activity amongst specific groups of artistic, administrative and technical creative workers (niche entrepreneurship policy); activities which strengthen entrepreneurial culture, climate and capacity in regional creative & cultural sectors (holistic entrepreneurship policy). Attached to this are the requested materials for review and consideration. Please me if any additional details or information is needed. Thank you for the opportunity, Jason C. White PhD Candidate, Cultural Policy & Arts Management The Ohio State University

2 Quick list of key field issues of interest 1. The lack of definitional consensus in the emerging field of arts entrepreneurship 2. The lack of data for evidencing characteristics, demographics, motivations and strategies of entrepreneurs in artistic fields 3. The lack of data for evidencing both start-up activity, start-up density and survival rates of arts-based ventures across the United States 4. The lack of a conceptual framework for arts entrepreneurship research Bio Jason C. White is currently a PhD candidate in The Department of Arts Administration, Education and Policy, specializing in Cultural Policy & Arts Management. Jason is a published author, with recent acceptance into the Arts Education Policy Review for his upcoming article "Arts Students in Debt: Concerns, Consequences and Interventions". In addition Jason serves as an Assistant Editor for the Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Research [ and an Associate Editor for the Journal of Arts Entrepreneurship Education [ Prior to attending The Ohio State University, Jason attended The University of Akron, obtaining both an MA in Arts Administration and a M.Ed. in Assessment & Evaluation.
