11 CENTRE FOR DISTANCE LEARNING GITAM University established the Centre for Distance Learning (CDL) in 2009 with the recognition of Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi on the recommendation of the Joint Committee of UGC-AICTE-DEC. 19 Faculty are really training us to learn fundamentals and applications in management field Captain PRAYAGA SRINIVAS Captain Shipping Consultant Instructional Design Course Material: Comprehensive printed course material, specially designed for self study, shall be provided to every learner. In addition to the course material, the learners are advised to read suggested text books and journal articles. Assignments: Assignments are an important component of distance learning which enable the learners study the subject regularly. Further, the assignments shall be treated as continuous assessment which carries 30 per cent weightage in determining the final grade. Assignment paper will be communicated to the learners by placing them in the university website or by post during every semester. The learners have to prepare the assignments in each programme of study and submit them either in soft copy online or hard copy by post as per the schedule. It is compulsory that the learners have to submit assignments. The University sends course material to the learners by post. If a learner wants additional copies of course material, they shall be provided on payment of Rs. 200/- per course/ paper. Online Learning - X learn: Streaming of lectures (live and recorded), access to study material, information alerts, discussion forum, chat with faculty and assignment submission are the important learning activities being offered. Semester-end examination is also conducted online. Academic Counseling: The personal contact counseling classes shall be conducted at specified centers to enable the learners to have face to face interaction with resource persons. The personal contact sessions will also provide an opportunity of meeting resource persons in various courses and discuss academic issues related to their study. The resource persons will provide updated information and conceptual clarification on doubts of the learners. Further, the learners shall have an opportunity of sharing the ideas and experiences with their peer group. 17

20 Learner support services like SMS, Web information, helpline provided by CDL are highly useful in the learning process SAILAJA PAPPULA Indian Overseas bank Learner Support Services Library: Library facility is provided in the Administrative Building of GITAM Centre for Distance Learning, where course-wise textbooks are available for the use of learners. The learners are also be permitted to make use of Knowledge Resource Centre (University Central Library) on production of Identity card. Interface: This facility is available at Head Quarters, where the administrative staff, core faculty and resource persons will attend to the requirements of the learners during office hours on all working days. Study Centres/Information centres: To provide individualized support to learners, the University has established study centers/information centres in identified educational institutions in different parts of the state. The learners can interact with the academic counsellors and administrative staff on academic matters at these centers. 18

Evaluation The performance of the learners shall be assessed, course-wise, on the basis of internal evaluation for 30 marks and semester-end examination for 70 marks. Internal evaluation shall be done on the basis of assignments. Two assignments for each paper have to be submitted as per the schedule communicated. These assignments will be valued for 30 marks and a candidate has to secure a minimum of 10 marks for a pass in internal assessment. The semester-end examinations shall be conducted at notified centres only. The semester-end examination is conducted for 70 marks in each course/paper. A candidate has to secure a minimum 40 marks (including specified minimum marks in internal assessment) to secure a pass in the examination. Semester-end Examination: The University conducts semester-end examination. Learners will be permitted to appear for the semester-end examination subject to the conditions that registration for the courses, in which they wish to appear is valid, and minimum time to pursue these courses is completed. The learners should register for all the courses/papers in the first attempt in any semester of study. However, they can appear for examination in courses as per their choice. Irrespective of result, the learner will be promoted to the next semester of the course of study. Examination Centres: Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad, Vijayawada and Tirupati. Examination centre may be changed at the discretion of the University. Submission of Application Form (incase of supplementary candidates): Examination application forms can be obtained from the Centre for Distance Learning, GITAM University, Visakhapatnam or downloaded from the website or from its study centres. The learners have to submit duly filled-in examination applications to the University along with Demand Draft / Banker s Cheque drawn in favour of CDL, GITAM University, payable at Visakhapatnam, within the stipulated time. 19

22 Grading System: Based on the learner s performance during a given semester, a final grade will be awarded at the end of the semester. The grades and the corresponding grade points are as given in the table below: Grade Grade points Absolute Marks O and above A A B B C F 0, Failed Less than 40 The Grade Point Average (GPA) will be calculated as per the formula given below : Σ [C X G] GPA = ΣC where C = no. of credits for the course G = grade points obtained by the Learner in that course Grade Point Average is awarded to those candidates who pass in all the courses in that semester. The required CGPA for a learner to be declared to have successfully passed and secured a class is as shown below: Distinction > 8.0* First Class > 7.0 Second Class > 6.0 Pass > 5.0 * In addition to the required CGPA of 8.0, the learner must have necessarily passed all the courses of every semester in the first attempt only. Incomplete application forms / re-registration forms received after due date or having wrong options of courses or electives or false information, shall be rejected. Fee once paid will not be refunded or adjusted forward. Learners are advised to visit: cdl.gitam.edu for academic calender and information alerts. The University reserves the right to change the rules and regulations relating to admissions, examinations, etc., from time to time. However, any rule as amended, shall come into force with immediate effect and applicable to all the learners irrespective of the year of registration.
