In equipment such as the pick-and-place machines used to assemble electronic printed circuit boards, Philips patented NForcer Technology will allow designers to reduce the number of motors and electronic drive modules required as well as simplifying overall mechanical design. This will result in significantly lower equipment cost. By reducing the mass of moving parts, it will also allow designers to produce designs that achieve higher accelerations and operating speeds. World electric power equipment demand to reach 70 billion in 2011 According to a recent study from The Freedonia Group, an industry market research firm, world transmission and distribution electric power equipment demand is forecasted to rise 4.4 percent per year through 2011 to 70 billion. The largest regional markets for electric power equipment will remain the Asia/Pacific region together with North America and Western Europe. In 2011, China will account for a quarter of the world market. The main product categories - transformers, switchgear and switchboard apparatus - will register similar growth rates. Bosch Rexroth acquires Oil Control Bosch Rexroth has announced its acquisition of Oil Control Limited in Coventry, UK, a manufacturer and distributor of hydraulic valves, power packs, pressure, flow, motion control valves and electrical solenoid valves. Effective from 1st January 2007, Bosch Rexroth acquired 100% of the share capital. Following a period of integration, the trade and business of Oil Control was transferred to Bosch Rexroth with effect from 1st August 2007 and will operate as part of the existing Hydraulics division of Bosch Rexroth Limited. The existing Coventry based operation will be maintained and developed with the goal of providing the highest level of service to customers Grey market for bearings in the UK Current estimates indicate that the grey market for bearings accounts for between 12 and 15 percent of total UK bearing sales. Not only does a growing grey market open up routes for more counterfeit products to enter the market, it also puts end users and distributors at greater risk of costly breakdowns, litigation and void warranties. As Des Pattinson from Schaeffler, points out: Although the offer price for the bearings may initially look attractive, buyers on the grey market have to ask themselves what are the potential hidden costs in terms of product liability and credibility with their customers if the product turns out to be counterfeit and things inevitably start to go wrong. These could, for example, be critical bearings on high value machinery in a manufacturing plant. The buyer therefore needs to take into account the cost of any production downtime if the bearing fails early. Extech to be acquired by FLIR Jerry Blakeley, President and owner of Extech Instruments Corporation has announced that he has entered into an agreement whereby the stock of the company is to be acquired by FLIR Systems Inc. Extech is a leading supplier of test and measurement instruments in addition to portable receipt printers and has an established distributor network covering 90 countries. Known for an innovative approach to product development, Extech has made extensive use of infrared technology for both measurement and for communication. Extech holds five patents incorporating IR in measurement instruments. It was the first company to introduce a portable printer with IrDA wireless communication. System Controllers operate 200 nodes The MIC01-CL controller can operate 200 nodes in the interface modules. The internal GSM/GPRS modem can send SMS- alarm messages detected by the interface modules. There is also a connector for microsd memory card where the user can collect trend data from various sources. The controller contains many diagnostic features like Linet short circuit protection, Linet missing nodes detection, poor Linet signal quality detection, over temperature protection, etc. The unit can connect up to 20 controllers together to create a large embedded system of networked controlers each controlling up to 200 interface modules. The MIC01-SC can contain 200 condition groups, 30 clock groups, 120 logic groups, 120 PID control groups, etc. Inputs and outputs of these groups can exist under any controller in this system. With Ethernet base network and Linet subnetworks the user can spread the system as wide as ever needed. They can be used across the full speed regulating range due to the subcritical rotor design and forced ventilation, even fast running machines such as high pressure fans, screw compressors or special circulating pumps manage to do without transmission gearing. The motors are compact and require little maintenance. The series covers the voltage classes from 400 through 690V and is available with outputs between 200kW and 1050kW. Issue N 12 December Conveyor Belts with lock connection In different areas of the transport and conveyer technology, the machine manufacturers require that the transport elements are cleaned at regular intervals. This work requires an easy-to-handle lock connection for the opening and closing of the often very long belts. With a system on the basis of Alpha linear ZS belts, such locks can now be realised. The characteristic lies in the handling and flexibility with regard to belt width, lock length and number of individual belt fingers, which are cut with a water jet. All these parameters can be adjusted. Due to the simplicity of this connection, even small quantities can be manufactured cost-effectively. In order to guarantee a stability of the locks that is adjusted to the basic belt, these connectors start from the timing profile AT 10 and the smallest thread M3. This structure consists of two alternating pressure and tension flanks flexibly connected by ribs. When one flank is subjected to pressure, the geometrical structure automatically bends in the direction opposed to the force applied. Airic s_arm is a robot arm with artificial bones and muscles. A total of 30 muscles move the bone structure which, as with our own arms, consists of ulna and radius, metacarpal and finger bones, a shoulder joint and a shoulder bon. The bones were designed on computer and are grown in a three-dimensional polyamide structure using a state-of-the-art laser sintering process. The muscles are already found in industry al applications under the name of fluidic muscles. When a fluidic muscle is filled with compressed air, its diameter increases and it is simultaneously shortened. Its greatest advantage over its human counterpart is that when contracted, it requires no further supply of energy. A weight once lifted can thus be held in any position indefinitely by Airic s arm. With this technology, the forces applied and the muscle's rigidity can be precisely metered. This is effected with very small, highly innovative proportional valves based on piezo technology. The tensile forces and the contraction of the individual muscles are measured by pressure and length sensors. A mechatronic unit then regulates the pressure distribution within the system, allowing movements that closely approach the action of human muscles in terms of kinematics, rapidity, force, but also refinement. Coordinating all these actuators is only possible using the most up-to- date mechatronic systems and software available. Movements which we humans carry out subconsciously, or even in a reflex action, still require a great amount of effort using computer-supported control and regulation. Extending the sensory range of Airic s arm, e.g. by means of cameras or tactile perception elements, would be conceivable in the future along with further developments in designing a back, hip, neck etc. Pure mechatronics: Sky_liner and Airmotion_ride Flying a kite calls for a great deal of skill. With the Sky_liner project, Festo is demonstrating that a kite can be controlled fully automatically by means of mechatronics, and is thereby forging a link to its key field of competence: automation by means of flowing air. Sky_liner comprises a configuration of two dual-line kites, each controlled by a mechatronic unit. These kites are thus no longer flown by hand, but automatically operated from indoors with servo motors and artificial wind. The PCs have either four free PCI slots or three free PCI and one PCI Express x1 to allow the installation of a wide range of long or short plug-in cards. These free slots allow the industrial computers to be extended with the usual modules required in plant and machinery construction, such as CAN bus, field bus or with additional controller cards. The converter is suitable for conveyor system applications. The control unit makes a direct link available to Ethernet networks. Due to the safety functions STO, SS1 and SLS, this safety version can be used in high-performance applications with safety-oriented requirements. The new control units operate in the performance range between 0.75 and 7.5kW and with voltages between 380 and 480V. The Profinet interface allows end-to-end communication from the office world to the field level. Following a recent production reorganization plan, the company decided to build a new factory in Curno, near Bergamo, a 15,000m 2 building. Here, some production units are located: the departments for mechanical machining and for the assembly of braking systems and wheels for motorbikes, and racing team for the development and production of brakes for cars and motorbikes, hosting mechanical operations, quality controls, assembly, testing and experimentation units. Compressed air distribution In the new building, the network of parallel distribution lines for compressed air and lubricating-cooling oil serving the machining centres at Brembo has been created using the modular piping systems AP and HBS by Teseo. The compressor room is equipped with two 132kVA screw machines and a filtering and drying system. Each machine delivers 22,860 l/min at 7.3 bar operating pressure. The plant equipped with Teseo products is connected to the outlet pipe of this room, and through a 4-inch feeding column (consisting of a HBS 110 pipe), flows into the main circuit, also based on pipes with the same diameter. The main circuit runs along the walls of the entire building for a total length of 500m. Several cross lines with 2 diameter (made of HBS 50 pipes) intersect with the main circuit, simplifying the connection to machines. These secondary lines have a total extension of 1,000m and are hanging from the ceiling supported by steel ropes. energy saving, deriving from the selection of a modular aluminium product like Teseo pipes. The plant was installed in different stages during the transfer of equipment from the old to the new production site, says Giorgi. We needed to commission the NC working center very quickly as soon as they reached the new destination, and we found a perfect solution with Teseo s HBS and AP pipes. Once a machine was positioned, the engineers drilled holes into the distribution lines, pre-assembled the drop columns at ground level, and finally connected to the network with suitable connection plates. Each extension, addition of extraction points or modification for the installation of new machines can be carried out very quickly, with consequent reduction of machine downtime and lower labour costs, underlines Giorgi. A traditional plant made of iron, even if zinc-plated, is subject to oxidization and rusting, so that you have to treat air with filters. Due to the poor quality of circulating air, it is necessary to replace filter cartridges and to carry out frequent maintenance. An aluminium plant is not subject to oxidization caused by air condensate, i.e. rust, so it does not contaminate air flowing through the plant, reducing costs deriving from this factor, adds Piergiorgio Giorgi. Thanks to the high quality of distributed air, all equipment supplied by the plant benefit from an extension of operating life with constant performance over time. Higher yield, lower waste An extruded aluminium pipe has a very smooth internal surface, which ensures higher flow rates and lower load loss as compared to traditional galvanized iron pipes. Some tests have shown 30% higher rates in HBS pipes as compared to a standard iron pipe with the same internal diameter. In practice, this translates into higher flow rates with identical power consumption for the generation of compressed air, or if you prefer, lower power consumption to achieve the same performance as iron piping. The patented coupling system with O-ring seals for the AP and HBS fittings ensures perfect tightness and the dramatic reduction of plant leaks. This feature allows reducing air consumption related to leaks, which is common in traditional plants with threaded couplings, concludes Giorgi. A market survey within the European Union reveals that this is a key issue for industrial air distribution plants to optimize air generation costs. Inside the building, compressed air is used in different ways, first of all to feed machining centres, where it is required to clean the tool-holding spindle and to operate different machine units. This requires high flow rates in short time to remove metal chips and dirt, in order to ensure proper assembly and high-quality workpiece machining. Compressed air is also used to supply the tools for workpiece deburring. The latter are highspeed grinding wheels supplied with compressed air, for which it is essential to have clean fluid and no rust or oxide. Finally, compressed air is necessary for the testing benches of calipers, requiring a high flow of clean air to ensure the optimal operation of pneumatic devices like cylinders and valves.
