3 The Charter of Principles and the Mission Statement January 30, 2007 The Senate approves the Charter of Principles and the Mission Statement of Sapienza University of Rome for international development cooperation as proposed by the Working Group on international cooperation for development (Professors, Staff and Students appointed by the Rector) International Cooperation for Development Mobility week, april Pagina

4 The Charter of Principles: Key Articles Sapienza University of Rome adopts the notion of development as common good based on the ethics of equality. Development must be pursued through programmes and interventions that take into account the specific characteristics of individual and social groups to whom they are addressed (art.1) Sapienza University of Rome emphazises the central role of research and education in the international development cooperation (art. 5) Sapienza University of Rome will develop specific strategies and promote research and education programmes stimulating the participation of the entire university community (art. 9)

7 Sapienza as Millennium University Sapienza University of Rome adopts the Millennium Development Goals ratified by the international community as the shared and agreed platform for cooperation with all countries where the gap in living conditions cannot be filled by human, technological and economic and financial means at their disposal. Consequently, Sapienza University of Rome proposes itself as a Millennium University for the attainment of the Millennium Development Goals in accordance with its own Statutes and its Charter of Principles for International Development Cooperation. 13 Millennium University Studio: aims and activities Aims: a) To implement field studies for students and a studio work on the Lake Victoria Region b) To expose students and academics from the North and the South to the work of a major Development Agency such as UNHABITAT c) To expand the role and the scope of the MDG based partnerships between Universities from the North and form the South and the UN system Beneficiaries: 10 Sapienza post-graduate students from different disciplines, and at least 5 students from Universities located in the project area (Lake Victoria area) Activities: strategic urban planning, enhancing municipal capacity for solid waste management, promotion of gender parity within the water and sanitation area, directing the students in participatory communication strategies, The results will be presented in international fora ( 2010 World Urban Forum) International Cooperation for Development 09/04/10 Pagina 13
