13 Supervision scheme summary Number of supervisors vs. number of students Two supervisors are assigned to a student: Tutor is a member of faculty responsible for the administrative part and for the science quality. Supervisor is a researcher (also external) responsible only for science. More than one supervisor is possible (especially for multidisciplinary programs). Supervisor shares research with the student.

14 Supervision scheme summary Faculty is in charge of assessment and periodical meetings with students. Assessment is carried out for each single course (introductory and foundations at least) Three milestones at least are planned, located at the end of each year. Assessment is public in front of faculty A research project is presented at the end of first year, updated at the end of second year and assessed at the end before scheduling thesis defence.

16 Supervision scheme summary Monitoring of student s career is carried out at the faculty level by a log-sheet with all the marks and credits earned (a good basis for a PhD diploma supplement) Copies of these log-sheets are available at the level of PhD School

18 Supervision scheme summary A contract is not signed between student and supervisor, although the supervisor is assigned with the agreement of student and faculty. A University regulation exists for student s duties and rights. Any problem must be solved at the level of Faculty with the intermediation of chairman Problems occurred in the past have been solved by appointing the chairman as the new tutor of the student

19 Monitoring A questionnaire is used for exploring the satisfaction of the students at the end of the studies. Every aspect of the quality is screened by an annual evaluation report. At national level an overall evaluation of the programs is required for assuring the quality level (faculty, opportunities of cooperation with external bodies at national and international level, student internationalisation, funding and facilities for research, abandoning, assessment methods, structured training, student s success
