4 Strong production location Core industries Engine construction, aerospace, environmental technology, fibre composite materials and IT With 29% engine construction, the greater Augsburg region lies far above the national average. A long-established production location, it offers great potential for industrial contract logistics, as recently proven in a study by the Swabian chamber of commerce (IHK Schwaben). 3

5 Above average purchasing power With a purchasing power of 20,997 per capita, the region lies significantly above the national average of 18,734. The region is located in the direct vicinity of Munich, the agglomeration with the greatest purchasing power in Germany. Wholesale and retail dealers use the region for their distribution centres. 4

6 Demographic development Up until 2010, the population development was particularly encouraging in the administrative districts of Aichach-Friedberg and Augsburg Land. The demographic forecast until 2030 shows the administrative districts of Augsburg City and Aichach-Friedberg maintaining their current population levels and thus their purchasing power. 5

7 Highly skilled labour potential Every 10th worker in the region is employed by the logistics sector. Augsburg offers an excellent education and further education situation thanks to its university, colleges and numerous other educational institutions. 8 Varied educational landscape Materials management and logistics, a new field of competence This new bachelor and masters degree course was established at the business and economics department in So far, some 50 students have graduated each year with numbers rising. There is a strong dovetailing of theory and practice through seminars and projects. Logistics and information cluster Five professors, four chairs and three degree courses form the logistics and information cluster. This business management degree course with logistics as its major field of study boasts some100 graduates each year with bachelor and masters degrees. Further practical training for employees With 11 locations, around 1,800 events and over 20,000 participants per year. Focus: purchasing/logistics/traffic, etc. KVL Traffic and Logistics Competence Centre: A collaboration between the Ulm and Augsburg chambers of commerce (IHK) for, amongst others, specialist consulting and further education. 7

9 Investment grants and financing Both the federal state of Bavaria and the German federal government grant low interest loans to promote investment. Investment loans for small and medium-sized businesses (< 250 employees/ < 50 million turnover) for establishing businesses creating jobs or contributing to the economic significance of the region (> 50% turnover outside of a 50 km radius); minimum investment 250,000 to a maximum 7.5%. The Capital and Investment grant programme is directed toward established companies (> 5 years), which create jobs through their investment. Maximum grant amount: 4 million. 13 Hub of the region The GVZ is Bavaria s third largest agglomeration with around 630,000 inhabitants, over 200,000 businesses and an expected population growth of 3.7% by It is centrally located in Southern Germany with 34 million inhabitants within a distribution radius of 250 km. 150 km < 2.5 hrs 250 km < 3-4 hrs The agglomerations of Munich, Stuttgart and Nuremburg can all be reached within 2.5 hours one way including handling. 14 Seaport hinterland location For the North Sea, Baltic Sea and Mediterranean seaports, the GVZ is an ideal hinterland location, easily reached by road and rail. Railroad connections exist to the German North Sea and Baltic seaports as well as to the Mediterranean seaports via Northern Italy (with additional capacities available through the expansion of the BBT, the Gotthard and NEAT). Lorries can reach main destinations within 10 hours or less, e.g., Verona (6:40 hrs.), Genoa (8:35 hrs.), Antwerp (8:59 hrs.) or Hamburg (9:23 hrs.). 13

15 European traffic gateway The Augsburg region GVZ is located at the centre of the trans-european railway network. It is connected with the European highspeed connection Paris Budapest (TEN Project 17). Extended connection Augsburg Munich and planned expansion of the Augsburg Neu Ulm connection. 16 Combined traffic terminal Modern intermodal terminal for combined traffic (planned) Overall completion is planned for 80,000 loading units with 4 transhipment platforms, 2 train composition platforms and 3 gantry cranes. The current transhipment centre is located at the container terminal in Augsburg- Oberhausen, some 4 km away (with a capacity of 24,000 loading units). 15
