7 Foreword Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail. Ralph Waldo Emerson KDU is proud to be in the forefront of defence related higher education as the only in Sri Lanka, and more so to be a prominent one in the region. We are glad that we have made good progress since inception in the 1980s, and especially so about the achievements made after the dawn of peace. While being grateful to the founding fathers for having the insight to germinate the seed of this great institution, those of us in the present and the future generations need to elevate it to greater heights by fulfilling the aspirations of the nation, and that is what we are trying to accomplish through all our activities at KDU. In the modern context, the responsibility of KDU in higher education is to be innovative, to avail its strengths for the betterment of the nation and to identify how best it could supplement the higher educational needs of the country at a time of peace. It is in this line that we identify intellectual capacity and character building as an essential goal of education, which is perhaps a lacuna in modern competitive education. So, we at KDU are committed to providing all necessary prerequisites for our students to be moulded into professionals with hearts and minds geared to achieve well-balanced future aspirations, and KDU believes that discipline and well-oriented hard work are the keys to achieving these goals. While fulfilling our primary objective with utmost dedication over the past few years, KDU also made a gigantic leap and widened its scope of activities in line with the national aspiration of expansion in the field of higher education. It challenged the conventional wisdom and commenced enlisting day-scholars to study together with officer cadets, and today after four years of this innovation, we see the signs of success and benefits for all parties concerned, the tri-services, general public and the nation as a whole. The revolutions in communication has made access to education more convenient than ever before and it has facilitated networking student communities around the world. However, vital access alone will not offer our students a complete international experience. Therefore, we believe that it is pertinent to create a sound cultural milieu within the university experience to generate deeper understanding among various cultures and nationalities and that would be an essential prerequisite for sustaining peace. In this sense, the increasing numbers of international students reading for KDU degrees is a heartening sign, and it is probable that the comradeships that our students develop with international students and vice versa would develop into strong links between nations in the future. To implement innovations like the ones mentioned above, we have ensured that our faculty consists of the best academics and officers in the country, committed to make out students happy, peaceful and better human beings. The faculties here are encouraged to eradicate the gloom of ignorance and enrich students with wisdom. Our students are expected to develop skills for keen analysis, to demonstrate the ability to effectively apply subject knowledge in analytical thinking in issues related to all paradigms. We at KDU believe that it is our primary duty to ensure the international relevance of our academic programmes and to maintain timelines, efficiency and excellence in our teaching, learning and research, in order to maintain the best standards and enhance student s interest in KDU, and we are optimistic that KDU is on the right path to deliver the goods for the nation and the humanity at large. 12 General Sir John Kotelawala Defence Academy (KDA) For the Motherland Forever In February 1977, then Director of Operation and Training of Army Headquarters Col JED Perera presented a paper to the Commander of the Army and the Ministry of Defence stating the necessity of higher education for officers of the Sri Lanka Army. In his paper he had highlighted the need to either recruit those with a university degree or to provide higher education for Officer Cadets to graduate prior to commissioning. Further, he had foreseen that such an institution for the army would not have been productive where the average annual officer requirement was approximately 20 officers. Therefore, he suggested that the establishment of an institution for higher education for officers of all three forces and perhaps the police be considered. He also suggested that this institution be called the National Defence Academy. As a result of this paper, in February 1978, a Joint Services Board of senior service officers was appointed to examine the prevailing system of recruitment and training of Officer Cadets and to make appropriate recommendations. The Board forwarded their recommendations to the Service Commanders in In 1979, a study team comprising of service officers and a University Grants Commission representative left for the National Defence Academy India to understand the administrative functions of a Defence Academy. All Service Commanders were in favour of the recommendations made by the team on their return from India. Therefore the recommendations were submitted to HE the President for formal approval to establish a National Defence Academy in Sri Lanka. Having received the approval, Maj Gen JED Perera was assigned to establish a Tri-Service National Defence Academy with the concurrence of the Commanders of the Navy and Air Force. Accordingly Maj Gen JED Perera discussed the matter of a suitable location with Colonel Sir John Kotelawala. It was at this juncture that Sir John Kotelawala had indicated his desire to donate his Kandawala Estate, comprising of 47 acres of prime land in Ratmalana, to the Government of Sri Lanka for the establishment of a Tri Service Defence Academy. On 11 th July 1979 Rt Hon Colonel Sir John Kotelawala donated his Kandawala Estate to the Government of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. 14 On 08 th October 1979 a Committee of Senior Service Officers comprising of the under mentioned officials were appointed to plan the establishment of KDA. Col GDGN Seneviratne - Chairman & Army Rep Wg Cdr EH Ohlmns - Air Force Rep Lt Cdr IK Lokubalasuriya - Navy Rep On 07 th April 1980, the movable property in the bungalow of Sir John Kotelawala was donated to the Government of Sri Lanka. Minister of Internal Security Mr TB Werapitiya and the three Service Commanders were present at Kandawala Estate where the Deed of Transfer was signed. On 30 th August 1980, a University study team comprising of Senior Academics of the Universities of Moratuwa and Colombo with a Service representative left for India to visit NDA. This was to study the Academic Syllabus and allied matters that would be relevant for the establishment of a Defence Academy. Kotalawala Defence Academy was established on 11 th October 1980 by His Excellency JR Jayewardena, the President of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. Initially, Col GDGN Senavirathne, the then Director Engineering Services Sri Lanka Army who headed the planning staff of KDA, administrated until the appointment of a Commandant. On 15 th January 1981 Col CAMN Silva was appointed the first Commandant of KDA and formally established its headquarters at Kandawala Estate. Procurement of the necessary equipment for KDA to function was undertaken with the concurrence of the Army Logistics Branch. Seven Officers and 16 other ranks from the three Services formed the core of KDA. Headquarters of KDA was housed in the rear section of General Sir John Kotelawala 14 the Walawwa. The late General s office was occupied by the Commandant. The first intake of 34 cadets was enlisted on 2 nd March 1981 and were billeted in the upper floor of the Walawwa where a field tent served as the cadet mess. Thirteen cadets were selected to follow a Physical Science Degree course at the University of Colombo. Nineteen followed an Engineering Degree course and two followed the degree course in Built Environment (Architecture) at the University of Moratuwa. 15 Founder of KDA and was posted to the Engineers Corps of the Ceylon Army. He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant on 2 nd February 1953, Captain on 2 nd February 1956 and Major on 1 st October His outstanding performance was further rewarded when he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel on 1 st October 1969, Colonel on 31 st January 1973, Brigadier on 5 th August He was promoted to the rank of Major General and was appointed the Commander of the Army on 14 th October He was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General on 14 th September He retired from the service on 13 th October General (rtd) JED Perera at his residence General Deshamanya JED Perera VSV D Litt FCMI (UK) FIMgt (SL) ndc psc Joseph Everard Denis Perera was born on 10th October 1930 in Colombo. He was educated at St. Peter's College, Colombo where he excelled academically whilst proving himself as an outstanding sportsman particularly in athletics, rugby and tennis. He was also a member of the College Cadet Platoon. After enlisting in the Sri Lanka Army as an Officer Cadet on 10 th October 1949, he underwent initial military training at the prestigious Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst in the United Kingdom from 11 th October 1949 to 2 nd August After successfully completing the Officer Cadet Course in the United Kingdom, he was commissioned on 2 nd August 1951 During his tenure as the Commander of the Army from 14 th October 1977 to 13 th October 1981, he provided strong leadership to the military operations conducted in the North and East. He also set the pace for the rapid expansion of the Sri Lanka Army in the wake of rising terrorism. Further, he initiated many infrastructure development projects for the Army. During his military career he contributed immensely to the advancement of the Army winning the admiration of his superiors as well as his subordinates. He was a source of encouragement and inspiration to officers and other ranks alike. He was always held in high esteem among his peers and colleagues. He was also instrumental in initiating and establishing KDA. After completing 32 years of illustrious service in the Army, he retired on 14 th October He then served for fifteen years as the Chancellor of KDA and KDU from 1995 to General Deshamanya JED Perera VSV D Litt (Honoris Causa), FCMI (UK) FIMgt (SL) ndc psc, the former Commander of the Army passed away on 11 th August 2013 in Colombo at the age of 83 years. 15 General Sir John Kotelawala

16 The Evolution of KDU The University seen today originated as a Defence Academy in This was established by the Parliamentary Act No. 68 of It was subsequently granted the authority to confer degrees, diplomas and certificates on officer cadets, officers and public officers by virtue of Parliamentary Act No. 27 of During the initial stages, KDA was mandated to facilitate better understanding of the combined role and task of the three armed forces-the Army, Navy and the Air Force. 19 At the very outset, enrolment of Officer Cadets to the Academy was limited to male Officer Cadets only. However by the year 1995 the capacity was expanded to enrol Female Officer Cadets as well. In 1988, the Government elevated the status of KDA to that of a recognised University, enabling it to confer degrees. 23 KDA was renamed as General Sir John Kotelawala by Parliamentary Act No. 50 of Understanding the need of the hour in tertiary education in Sri Lanka and the importance of introducing its disciplined learning environment to civilian students, the University opened its doors to civil students in This civil-military harmonious blend emerged successful and it set a new trend in tertiary education. This change transformed the entire University into an entity which is more than just a traditional defence academy. The University further expanded the concept by opening its doors to foreign civilian students too in Through this initiative, both civil and military graduates are expected to grasp the future organisational culture that the country desires and the mind-set of their fellow comrades working in the armed forces, parallel government ministries and public services of friendly countries. 26 Right Honourable General Sir John Kotelawala PC CH KBE LLD General Sir John Kotelawala John Lionel Kotelawala popularly known as John Kotelawala was born on 4 th April 1897 to John Kotelawala Sr. and Alice Elizabeth (nee Attygalle) of Madapatha. Sir John, as he was quite fondly known, was the eldest of a family of three; his brother was Justin Kotelawala and his sister, Freda Kotelawala, went on to wed CVS Corea. Hailing from a leading family at Madapatha, Sir John attended Royal College, Colombo for his formal education. Thereafter, he proceeded to Christ s College, Cambridge to pursue his higher education in agriculture. He was a popular character, both at school and at university due to his sporting prowess. John Kotelawala Snr ( ) FR Senanayake John Kotelawala Snr was an Inspector of the Ceylon Police Force until his untimely death in 1908, when Sir John was merely eleven years old. Sir John s impulsiveness is a trait he inherited from his father, but it is from his mother he inherited inspiration in moulding his character. Sir John once wrote, It is from her (mother) that I have learnt lessons in tolerance and the importance of tackling every difficult situation with courage and determination. Sir John often gratefully credited FR Senanayake for being the most influential figure in his life. In his autobiography titled An Asian Prime Minister s Story, he wrote, The man who has most to do with moulding my character and influencing me for good in my youth was FR Senanayake, who married my mother s sister, and managed our family s estates. Since inception, KDA used the dictum therein as its motto - "For the Motherland Forever" DS Senanayake Dudley Senanayake General Sir John Kotelawala 26

27 Sir John married Miss Effie Dias Bandaranaike and the couple had a daughter, Lakshmini Kotelawala who later married Henry Gerald Kotalawala and gave birth to a son. Sir John had a strong desire to become a soldier and his dream became a reality when he joined the Ceylon Light Infantry (CLI) on 15 th September 1922 at the age of 25 years as a Second Lieutenant. He was elevated to the rank of Lieutenant on 27 th October 1924, followed by a further promotion to Captain on 23 rd August Upon reaching the rank of Major on 1 st October 1933 Sir John was thereafter appointed 2 nd in Command of the Ceylon Light Infantry on 1 st July 1939 and rose to be the Commanding Officer of the CLI on 1 st September On 1 st October 1940, he was promoted to the rank of Lt Colonel and posted to the Reserve of the Corps. Subsequently, he was promoted to the coveted rank of Colonel on 2 nd July 1942 and became popularly known as Col JL Kotelawala. Although the institution was granted university status, it retained its title as Kotelawala Defence Academy (KDA) until 11th October 2007 when it was renamed as General Sir John Kotelawala. The above mentioned Parliament Bill was amended on 18th March 2007 granting the status of a State University to the original Defence Academy. 28 While serving as a Military Officer in the Voluntary Reserve of the Ceylon Light Infantry, Sir John entered politics in the late 1920s under the guidance of his relatives DS Senanayake and his son Dudley Senanayake. He contested the Kurunegala seat in 1931, when the first election was held to elect members to the State Council of Ceylon. He was privileged to hold the portfolio as the Minister of Agriculture and Lands from 1931 to During the second State Council from 1936 to 1947, he held the portfolio of Minister of Communications and Public Works. With the introduction of the Soulbury Constitution in 1947, Sir John Kotelawala was appointed as the Minister of Transport & Works as well as the Leader of the House in the first Parliament of Ceylon from 1947 to He went onto hold the same portfolio from 1952 to 1953 in the second Parliament. Sir John was called upon to form a government on 12 th October 1953, when Dudley Senanayake resigned from Premiership. 30 An exemplary figure, Sir John Kotelawala was privileged to receive several distinguished honours from across the world. He was made a Member of the Privy Council (PC) on 22 nd April 1954, the second and the last to receive this coveted honour from Her Majesty the Queen of Great Britain. Sir John further received a Doctor of Laws (LLD) from the University of Ceylon. Among other honours, he was appointed a Knight Grand Cross of the following Orders Legion d honneur (France) 1954, Order of Merit (Italy) 1954, Order of Merit (Federal Republic of Germany) 1955, Order of the White Elephant (Thailand) 1956, Order of the Netherlands Lion (Netherlands), appointed 1 st Class, Order of the Rising Sun (Japan) 1954 and an Associate KStJ in He was honoured with the Knighthood KBE (Knight of the Order of the British Empire - Civil Devision) on 10 th June 1948 and was awarded the Order of Companions of Honour on 2 nd January Sir John Kotelawala was also the recipient of the Defence and War Medals, Jubilee Medal 1935, Coronation Medals 1937 (C/G ) and 1953, Efficiency Medal (Ceylon) and the 1 st clasp in 1949, Ceylon Armed Services Inauguration Medal in 1956, Ceylon Armed Service Long Service Medal in 1968, Republic of Sri Lanka Armed Services Medal in 1972 and the Sri Lanka Army 25 th Anniversary Medal in A proprietary planter, a mine owner and a Justice of Peace (JP) for Ceylon, Kotelawala was the first Chairman of the CLI Association in Hailing from one of the pioneering families in the Graphite Industry in Sri Lanka, Sir John Kotelawala was wellknown in the mining circles as he owned two extensive mines named Kahatagaha and Kolongaha, situated in Dodangaslanda in the Kurunegala district where he represented the House during the latter part of his political career. 32 One of General Sir John Kotelawala s strongest personality traits was his unbridled dislike, one might even say hatred, of anything and anyone that invoked racism. This was a topic of great controversy during his life, both during his adolescent years and adulthood, and for all intents and purposes, he seemed to have fought tooth and nail against those who brought racism to the forefront in everyday life. The populace adored Sir John as he never lost the common touch though he regularly moved with the elite. It is worth recording that Sir John seems to be the most unforgettable prime minister of Ceylon. He feared nobody and could be approached without any fear. General Sir John Kotelawala 32

33 Sir John Kotelawala owned the 48 acre Kandawala Estate for more than sixty years. Initially Sir John wanted to donate the property to a charitable cause but it was General Dennis Perera who was instrumental in persuading Sir John to gift his lands to a far reaching national cause. On 11 th July 1979, prior to his demise, Sir John transferred the Kandawala Estate property by a Deed of Gift to the State to establish a National Defence Academy. He was a man of supreme honour and discipline, the result of a life spent in the military. A sense of responsibility and duty was ever present, which considerably paved the way in the formation of this University. And it was his motto to serve his motherland forever, which is reverberated in the University s motto. It is pertinent to place on record that, Sir John was elevated to the rank of General (then highest rank in the Sri Lanka Army) by His Excellency JR Jayewardene, the President of the Republic of Sri Lanka while on the deathbed at the Merchants Ward, General Hospital Colombo. This was a day prior to his death on 2 nd October Sir John is said to have responded to the honour with a weak smile. 41 The Kandawala residence is neither a manor house nor the ancestral home of Sir John. He purchased it at a public auction in At the time of purchase, there had been a small three bed-roomed house, set in the midst of cinnamon tracts and coconut groves. The mansion seen today was built in 1926, prior to Sir John s entry into politics in Though known as the Walawwa, this is only a modest residence that blends with the verdant environs. The entire house, on all four sides, opens up on to the luscious gardens and offers pleasant vistas. A sense of space and timelessness permeates throughout the house. The house boasts of spacious verandas, polished floorboards and several open areas, filtering in ample light into the interior. The upper floor consists of a spacious sitting area as well as bedrooms for the family, offering a view of the parklands. The Walawwa itself was later converted into a museum and was aptly named the Sir John Kotelawala Museum. It was declared open on 10 th October 1993 by the then President of Sri Lanka, His Excellency DB Wijetunga. This was a fitting honour bestowed upon Sir John, the great philanthropist who unselfishly donated his wealth to his motherland. 45 Although this institution was granted university status in 1988, its name retained as Kotelawala Defence Academy (KDA) until 11 th October 2007 when it was renamed as General Sir John Kotelawala. The relevant Parliament Act was amended on 18 th March 2007 granting the status of a State University to the original Defence Academy. 48 Today, all degree programmes of KDU conform to national and international standards and benchmarks, and the University ensures that its curricula are regularly updated taking into account the fast changing higher educational landscape both at national and international levels. The University follows the credit based course unit system and Grade Point Average (GPA) evaluation system in compliance with the recommendations of the Quality Assurance and Accreditation Council (QAAC) of the University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka and it undergoes programme and institutional reviews of QAAC. Bachelor's degree programmes at the university range from three to five years. 50 Faculty of Graduate Studies Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) conducts postgraduate degree programmes for officers of the tri-services and the police and for public and private sector executives The Faculty of Graduate Studies (FGS) conducts all postgraduate degree programmes for officers of the tri-services, and the police and for executive officers of the public and private sector. The Faculty was established in 2001 as the MSc section to offer MSc (Defence Studies) Degree in Management for senior officers of the tri-services and police. In 2003, it commenced a BSc (Defence Studies) Degree in Management for deserving middlelevel officers. The Faculty was renamed on numerous occasions, such as in 2004 when it was referred to as the Staff Development and Career Advancement Division and in 2007 as the Institute of Postgraduate Studies. 51 The Faculty serves both local and foreign students and professionals with programmes that are designed to ensure high academic acheivements. 54 Located within the KDU premises, the recently opened six-storied faculty building is one of the largest graduate studies faculty buildings in Sri Lanka. The new faculty comprises of 16 fully equipped classrooms with modern audio visual facilities, a state-of-the-art auditorium with a seating capacity of 300, an examination hall which could cater for 300 students, a computer laboratory for 50 students, a modern conference room, an administrative office complex, a cafeteria and leisure areas. The unique feature of this building is that it comprises of the highest synthetic wall climbing facility in Sri Lanka with a height of 54 feet. In addition, the newly constructed FGS building also has three well-furnished suite rooms for visiting lecturers with all apartmental amenities. 58 Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies The Military training programme at General Sir John Kotelawala is a compulsory component for Officer Cadets in their defence studies. It has been carefully drawn up to mould them to take up responsibilities confidently as Commissioned Officers of the Armed Forces. In the initial stages of the Academy, the military component of the degree programme was conducted under the military wing of the Academy, which was responsible for the training and grooming of all the Officer Cadets. In 2009, the military wing was developed into the Faculty of Defence Studies. With the inclusion of the Department of Strategic Studies, in 2013 it was renamed as the Faculty of Defence and Strategic Studies (FDSS). The faculty plays a vital role within the University as it is responsible for military training and grooming of the Officer Cadets, defence related research, Strategic Studies and the administration of Cadets and Day-Scholars. The faculty has two departments namely, the Department of Defence Studies and the Department of Strategic Studies. The entire student population of Officer Cadets and Day-Scholars are placed under the Department of Defence Studies. Intakes of Officer Cadets and Day-Scholars are administrated by Squadron and Troop Commanders assigned to each intake. This faculty is heavily involved in designing and conducting modules on leadership and soft skill development. Their responsibilities have increased with the enrolment of Day-Scholars, where they are entrusted to develop the same, which requires commitment and dedication by the military staff of the faculty. The faculty engages in strategic level research, which would be beneficial for policy makers. They are also actively involved in organising the annual International Research Conference, along with other important events conducted by the university. 60 Department of Defence Studies The entire undergraduate population of Officer Cadets and Day-Scholars is placed under the Department of Defence Studies. In addition the Department is responsible for the military training of the Cadets. The Department of Defence Studies comprises of six squadrons, namely Gemunu, Gajaba, Vijayaba, Parakum, Mahasen and Walagamba. Each squadron is formed with officer cadets of different intakes and sub-divided into several troops for command and control purposes. A squadron commander holds the responsibility of the entire squadron while troops are governed under the supervision of troop commanders. 64 The objective of drill is to develop discipline, instinctive obedience, alertness, cooperation and the loyalty towards the Service and the country. Cadets turnout to be confident individuals who are able to execute duties collectively and individually. It also improves the skills in communication and power of command. Department of Strategic Studies The Department of Strategic Studies is the academic and research arm of the faculty. It functions mainly as a think-tank focusing on the field of Strategic Studies as an interdisciplinary academic area of study. 70 Faculty of Medicine Established in 2009, the Faculty of Medicine (FOM), General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University is the only national military medical institution of higher education in Sri Lanka. The first batch of Military Medical Students (MMS) was enlisted to Intake 27 in 2009 and was trained upto second MBBS examination at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ruhuna, under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the two institutions. The first two batches of military medical students were given training upto second MBBS examination at FOM Ruhuna until the infrastructure and other facilities were ready at KDU. From the third batch of MBBS students onwards, KDU commenced the conduct of the complete MBBS programme at FOM KDU with required labs and other infrastructure. Currently there are five batches following the MBBS course and the first batch of MBBS graduates graduated in 2014 with high academic achievements, completed their internships, and are currently serving in defence medical establishments. The MBBS programme offered by the faculty is available only for military cadets and foreign students on fee-levying basis. The faculty follows a traditional medical curriculum spread over five years. In addition to the fourteen subjects taught at civilian medical schools, these students are exposed to Military, Aviation, Naval, Nuclear, Trauma and Emergency Medicine as MMS are trained to serve in the tri-forces. The MBBS course is conducted by experienced academic and medical professionals. 72 Department of Preclinical Sciences The Department of Preclinical Sciences has a major role in laying the foundation in moulding a medical student to a competent, skilled and compassionate medical professional. The curriculum is designed to introduce and facilitate the teaching and learning of the scientific basis of understanding in clinical sciences. The Behavioural Sciences Stream (Personal & Professional Development) runs parallel to the medical programme and is especially designed to inculcate a holistic approach to doctor-patient relationships. 74 Department of Paraclinical Sciences The Department of Paraclinical Sciences undertakes teaching in 3 rd MBBS Part I and II subjects. The subjects offered provide essential complementary knowledge for clinical sciences and facilitates rational decision making as a clinician and a community physician. This department is responsible for teaching the military students from 4 th semester to 7 th semester. Activities include lectures, tutorials, practical and community based teaching. Department of Clinical Sciences The Department of Clinical Sciences undertakes teaching final year subject areas of study such as Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Paediatrics, Psychiatry and Surgery. These subjects are the cornerstones of clinical medicine for a practicing doctor. This department is responsible for teaching the military medical students from the 6 th semester to the 10 th semester. Teaching and learning activities include lectures, tutorials and clinical training. These students sit for the final MBBS examination at the end of the course. 76 Faculty of Engineering The objective of the Faculty of Engineering (FOE) is to produce academically qualified officers to the Tri-Services. Today this has further expanded with the intake of civil students to produce qualified engineers to the public and private sectors of the country in addition to its original objective. The Faculty was initially housed in the Academic building. The development of the purpose-built, ultramodern seven storey eco-friendly building would allow the Faculty of Engineering to be housed within it. The Engineering degree programmes are offered for both officer cadets and civilian students. KDU has been engaged in offering degrees to foreign students of the SAARC region and it is now open for all friendly countries on fee levying basis. Department of Civil Engineering The Department of Civil Engineering conducts academic study programmes related to the specialisation of Civil Engineering and the degree programme is equipped with a range of comprehensive knowledge and problem solving skills for a lucrative and satisfying career in any of the diverse areas of civil engineering. In addition to the core engineering skills, the degree programme places emphasis on the development of transferable skills, such as information technology and communication skills in prospective civil engineers, which are essential for them to excel in the field of civil engineering anywhere in the world. 78 Department of Aeronautical Engineering Established in 1991, the Department of Aeronautical Engineering is the only recognised degree awarding institute in Sri Lanka for BSc in Aeronautical Engineering and BSc in Aircraft Maintenance Engineering. These degrees are accepted by the Civil Aviation Authority in Sri Lanka. Though initially catered to the requirements of the Sri Lanka Air Force, the Department opened its doors to Day-Scholars in 2012, and presently it caters to a diverse undergraduate population ranging from local and foreign cadets and day-scholars. Lectures are conducted by reputed academics. The Department facilitates industrial training at Sri Lanka Air Force and Sri Lankan Airlines. Further, practical session are organised at Engineering establishments and at the Sri Lanka Air Force. A corporate member of the Royal Aeronautical Society of UK, the Department has a laboratory which houses a sophisticated low speed wind tunnel (by Aerolab Inc), the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka. 80 Department of Marine Engineering The Department of Marine Engineering offers a four year BSc in Marine Engineering. It commenced its degree programme in 1989 and is an ISO 9001:2008 certified department. The Marine Laboratory consists of associated components which are dedicated towards illustrating theoretical sessions for the students. It consists of Auxiliary Machinery which include pumps, Reverse Osmosis Plants and an Air Conditioning and Refrigerator Plant. The Department also has an Operational Inshore Patrol Craft for practical training. This is at the newly restored Kandawala Lake which provides undergraduates with a unique practical experience of maintenance, manoeuvrability and engine up-keeping. Industrial Training The undergraduate programme also includes a compulsory Industrial Training period of 24 weeks. Industrial Training is meant to provide hands-on technical training related to the industry, which is provided in reputed institutes in the country. 81 Department of Electrical, Electronic and Telecommunication Engineering The Department offers three degree programmes, namely; Electrical and Electronic Engineering Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering Bio-Medical Engineering In addition since 2015 it conducts an Advance Diploma in Ships System Maintenance for the Royal Navy of Oman. The Degrees offered are available for both cadets and day scholars. The undergraduates undergo industrial training at leading public and private electrical and electrical institutions in Sri Lanka. 82 Department of Mechanical Engineering The department of Mechanical Engineering offers two specialisations, namely Mechanical Engineering and Mechatronic Engineering. It has been playing a dynamic role in the FoE mainly due to the presence of a highly qualified panel of lecturers with a wide range of expertise. The academic background of the faculty, their teaching experience, research capabilities and industrial exposure make a significant contribution to the overall strength of the department. The department possesses well-equipped laboratories in Thermodynamics, Applied Mechanics, Control Engineering and Material Testing. 84 Faculty of Law T he Faculty of Law was established in 2011 with the view of providing legal education to the Officer Cadets qualifying them to become legal officers in the Tri-Forces of Sri Lanka. Presently, the Faculty accommodates over 200 students. There are Officer Cadets and day-scholars. The Faculty confers the Bachelor of Laws degree and other postgraduate degrees. The objective of the programmes is to train Officer Cadets and non-military students to be academically and professionally qualified in the legal fields. The Faculty of Law consists of two departments, namely; Department of Civil Law Department of Military Law Furthermore, the Faculty of Law conducts the following annual workshops; Workshop on International Environmental Law with the Moragoda International Law Trust I Workshop on nternational Humanitarian Law with the International Committee and the Red Cross (ICRC) The Faculty also conducts Moot Courts for its undergraduates, enabling them to have an experience in orally presenting their stance on a legal issue against an opposing counsel. 85 Faculty of Management, Social Sciences & Humanities The Faculty of Management, Social Sciences and Humanities functions with three departments, namely; the Department of Management and Finance, the Department of Social Sciences and the Department of Languages. At present there are around 500 undergraduates Officer Cadets and Day-Scholars as well as postgraduate students with the faculty. The Departments of Management and Finance and the Department of Social Sciences offer the following three degree programmes: BSc in Logistic Management BSc in Management and Technical Sciences BSc in Social Sciences English is a compulsory subject for all undergraduates as they read for their degrees in the medium of English. Therefore, the Department of Languages plays a significant role at KDU by offering English for Specific Purposes (ESP) courses tailor-made for students of different Faculties of KDU. In addition, it offers English Communication Skills courses for the Faculty of Law and Faculty of Computing. Further, it offers Certificate and Diploma courses in English for serving military officers, foreign students from countries such as China, Vietnam and Oman. In 2015, it commenced an Advanced Certificate Course in English for Officers enlisted for MSc/psc programme at the Staff College and an English course for Sri Lanka Administrative Service cadets. 88 The Faculty of Allied Health Sciences (FAHS) is the latest addition to the developments at KDU. The main focus in establishing the Faculty was the improvement of health outcomes and to transform the healthcare delivery in Sri Lanka. The Faculty s first intake of civil students was admitted in January 2013 for its undergraduate courses. The Faculty operates under seven departments namely, the Department of Nursing & Midwifery, the Department of Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy, the Department of Radiography & Radiotherapy, the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences, the Department of Pharmacy and finally the Department of Multi-Disciplinary Services. The Faculty hopes to expand its degree programmes to cover all the disciplines in health sciences - both at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels - in the near future. It also looks forward to opening its doors to overseas students to ensure an international outlook on global issues of healthcare. 90 Entrusted with training the next generation of allied health professionals in a supportive and friendly environment, the faculty currently offers only undergraduate courses of study. Very soon, the courses offered will be expanded to cover all the disciplines in health sciences both at undergraduate and postgraduate level. The students at FAHS will have the opportunity to learn via a variety of work placements under the guidance of local as well as overseas academia in an exciting environment. The programmes are student-centred to suit the needs of students with different learning styles and to reinforce self-directed independent learning. In the curriculum priority is given to a practical approach to enable graduates to develop a holistic approach towards the delivery of healthcare. The students are exposed to a range of learning opportunities on real and on simulated settings to enhance learning under the facilitation of academia at FAHS apart from senior academics from the Faculty of Medicine, KDU and from state universities in Sri Lanka. Teaching Hospital The construction of the proposed Teaching Hospital for General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University has already commenced on a land at Werahera, in the outskirts of Colombo. Situated in a quiet place with natural tranquility, the hospital will provide care to the general public and service personnel while training both undergraduate and postgraduate military medical students and allied health staff from Sri Lanka and foreign countries. The hospital is expected to facilitate high quality research. The 704 bed hospital being built comprises of state-of-the-art facilities with cutting edge technology to provide round the clock emergency & trauma care and specialised treatment of diseases in all aspects of medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics & gynaecology. 93 Southern Campus The second academic wing of General Sir John Kotelawala in the land of the peacock General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, recognising the growing demand of students and academics, deemed its current capacity insufficient and thus bloomed the inspiration to broaden this network. With the opportunity that was provided to commence a University Village in Sooriyaweva, KDU accepted the challenge of becoming pioneers and establishing the Faculty of Computing and the Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences from scratch on 140 acres of land vested by the government. This decision brought about the inaugration of the a Campus in the Southern region of Sri Lanka in early 2015, which is dedicated to offering courses of study in the fields of Architecture, Quantity Surveying, Surveying Sciences and Computing. Due to the unremitting and steadfast commitment and contribution of the great minds behind the development of the Southern Campus, within barely a year of its inception, the campus now confidently provides students with sports and library facilities, computer laboratories, fully equipped architectural studios and the latest laboratory equipment that is coupled with a quality tertiary education. 100 Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences The Faculty of Built Environment and Spatial Sciences (FBESS) is the newest addition to KDU and is the first faculty of the KDU Southern Campus. The faculty consists of three departments, namely the Department of Architecture, the Department of Quantity Surveying and the Department of Spatial Sciences. These departments conduct seven degree programmes for Cadets, Day- Scholars and foreign students. Maintaining an eco-friendly presence, the campus cultivates its fruits and vegetables, allowing its current produce to be sold, generating an additional income for the campus up-keep. Staff Development Centre Referred to as the SDC, this specialised institute of the University overlooks the development its academic staff. 109 The main campus is set amidst 50 acres of sprawling park country in the immediate south of Colombo. It nestles amidst the Kandawala Lake to the West, the marsh lands of Aththidiya to the North and the Weras Ganga to the East. The Kandawala Lake adjoining the University is a haven for a variety of aquatic fauna and flora. This Lake-covering an area of seven acres was recently dredged and restored to its pristine glory under the Kandawala Lake Restoration Project. The objective of the project was flood retention in the locality. Simultaneously, a few novel features have been added for public recreation such as a walking path, pedal boats and aquatic sports facilities. This facelift to the lake has greatly enhanced the beauty of its surroundings. Ensuring the zero disturbance to the natural setting, utmost care was taken to protect the small islet in the lake, which was a nesting place for a several species of avifauna.
