REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2014 AND REFLECTIONS FOR THE FUTURE The annual report of 2014 provides an overview of the activities of the Entrepreneurship Unit of the Turku School of Economics (TSE) at the University of Turku. The report demonstrates our activities in all the three areas in which universities are to be involved: research, education and societal impact. Entrepreneurship Unit is highly research-oriented with its numerous international research projects and outcomes (e.g. publications, scientific and societal impact). We have been extremely successful in gaining competitive external funding to the Unit, particularly the finance received from the Academy of Finland has been highly important for our development and success. On the other hand, in terms of education Entrepreneurship is a small subject with modest number of students majoring in Entrepreneurship although we serve as an important minor for several Masters programmes. Among the other universities in Finland the Entrepreneurship programme of the TSE is unique. Our Entrepreneurship programme is the only entrepreneurship programme targeted at Finnish speaking students in which a student can study entrepreneurship both in Bachelor and Masters levels, and continue up to the PhD. The contents and approaches developed in our Entrepreneurship programme are further transferred to and applied in the executive education programmes offered to business executives by the TSE exe, the executive education of the TSE. These form the ground for our future endeavours. Longstanding background work is required for new openings and collaborative efforts of the highest calibre. We have built our activities through highly competitive external funding and success in it. Our strategy is to work with the best in the field in order to ensure success in research funding competition. We are highly multidisciplinary both in our current research and in our future research endeavours. Our multidisciplinary approach increases the possibilities for new openings and breakthroughs by combining disciplinary fields. We aim to continue and develop our current international collaborations. Within University the existing good collaboration will be further enhanced. We expect the rigorous research to have the scientific impact in the future as well. In addition, we expect that the relevance of the research results will expand, as there is increasing need for the type of knowledge produced at the Entrepreneurship Unit. Our future is endangered by the conflation of education and scientific research into block-thinking where teaching and related majorsubjects lead the planning and strategic thinking in the faculty. On the other hand, multidisciplinary collaboration of the 7-faculty University offers already established and widening opportunities for Entrepreneurship. In coming years this will be demonstrated in the Entrepreneurship strategy and its implementation at the University of Turku. In the autumn 2014 I was nominated by the rector to chair a working group to prepare such a strategy and plan. The hands-on work has started in spring 2015 with two pilot faculties, namely the Faculty of Humanities and the Faculty of Medicine. The goal is to strengthen the profile of the University of Turku as an entrepreneurial university. If we succeed in implementing the entrepreneurship strategy of the university the Entrepreneurship Unit and the TSE have definitely supported the University of Turku to strengthen its role as a dynamic and academic force in the society. This is something any entrepreneurship researcher would be proud of. Jarna Heinonen Professor in Entrepreneurship Director of the Entrepreneurship Unit and Vice-Head of the Department of Management and Entrepreneurship 3
Employs 12 entrepreneurship professionals NINE active competitively funded research projects 10 peer-reviewed journal articles PROFILE Research on entrepreneurship and new working modes Entrepreneurship is one of the strength areas of the Turku School of Economics. The research activities on Entrepreneurship Unit have focused particularly on two themes: entrepreneurship and new working modes; and entrepreneurial behaviour and business growth. Research encompasses the processes of entrepreneurship and innovation as well as entrepreneurial behaviour from the point of view of business creation, growth, internationalisation, and renewal in different contexts both in private and public sector organisations. Our research on entrepreneurship ranges from business start-ups to innovative companies seeking growth and global presence as well as to any other innovative organisation seeking renewal and change. Our Entrepreneurship research group consists of about a dozen researchers with various scientific backgrounds, who cooperate with our national and international partners on several interesting research projects. Multidisciplinary scholarly excellence and policy relevance 142 reviews to journals and conferences 25 presentations in THIRTEEN international conferences Several international faculty members and visitors We work internationally and emphasise scholarly excellence and policy relevance based on solid scientific knowledge in entrepreneurship particularly. The cornerstones of our entrepreneurship research are well-established multidisciplinary research group, high-profile international research initiatives and networks, strong track record in competitive research funding as well as intensive cooperation with policy-makers. Results through international collaboration We are active in the international scientific community, for example in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor. We are also hosting the secretariat of the European Council for Small Business (ECSB). The staff members are participating in and organising international research conferences, as well as serving on the editorial boards of high-ranking entrepreneurship journals. 4
RESEARCH WITH IMPACT Highlights from our most important research projects active in 2014 Gendered economy embedded in equality? Minna Canth research project Professor Anne Kovalainen's Academy of Finland funded research project on Gendered Economy and her Minna Canth Academy professorship produced fundamental social sciences research as well as new empirical analysis of the gendered economy in Finland and globally. This research built on her long-term studies and research in the intersections of economy, labour and entrepreneurship. The Gendered Economy project analysed the epistemic and ontological bases of knowledge creation in the field of fundamental research that have an effect on how researchers identify research problems and come to solutions. The project gathered renowned social scientists and philosophers (among others, prof. Longino, Stanford University; senior lecturer Halewood, Essex University) as visiting researchers to, among others, a ground breaking symposium on process ontology as well as to longer term visits and cooperation at the University of Turku. The project analysed the gender relations and equality in different economic spheres and arenas, ranging from public and private sectors to start-ups and transitions between paid employment and entrepreneurship. In addition to international visiting scholars, the project employed both post doc researchers and PhD candidates. Four PhD candidates defended their theses in different disciplines and two theses are nearing completion at other universities. The project organised several seminars, produced many journal articles, conference streams, presentations and a number of books were published internationally. Researchers participating in the project worked in several international research communities; Stanford University, London School of Economics, University of Technology Sydney, Newcastle University, Essex University, Linköping University and Roskilde University. The Gendered Economy project generated further successful research projects and proposals. The research group also expanded during the course of the project. As a concrete example of the project s impact, the successful application for a FiDiPro-professorship for Lisa Adkins (Newcastle University, Australia) as well as the receipt of Finnish Academy Funding should be mentioned. The Gendered Economy project built a significant international research network which comes together every second year for a conference at the University of Turku. In 2015, over 300 international researchers will participate in the WORK2015 conference in August. The project will continue through several of these collaborative activities. 5
Gender and growth in family firms: from 1750 until present This ongoing international research project ( ) takes a multidisciplinary approach on analysing gender and growth in a family business context. The research project funded by the Academy of Finland is run in close collaboration with the department of Finnish History at the University of Turku headed by respective professors Jarna Heinonen from the Entrepreneurship Unit and Kirsi Vainio- Korhonen from the Finnish History. The uniqueness of the project lies on its attempt to focus on the element of time and place in understanding gender and growth. In the School of Economics the project has employed four part-time senior research fellows of which two from Norway, Bodø University and the Nordland Research Institute as well as one PhD candidate. This far the project has produced a number of international conference papers, few journal articles and an internationally published book. The project will organise an international closing research seminar on June 2015 and the research papers presented in the seminar will be considered as a contribution to the intended book on Women in Business Families from past to present which is to be published by an international publisher. In the Department of Finnish History the project has already contributed to one doctoral dissertation and the second one will be defenced in June Research on the renewal of health and social services In 2014, two research projects concerning the renewal of health and social services were completed. Both projects were funded by the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation (TEKES) and applied a multidisciplinary approach. In addition to hands-on interventions in target organisations the projects resulted in eight article manuscripts, and a number of policy papers, presentations, and popular articles. Researchers in the SAGE Project studied secure aging as a business opportunity and, in particular, explored how active citizens and various organisations may engage in shared innovation processes in this specific field. The project was led by Professor Heinonen and conducted in close collaboration with the Faculty of Medicine. Systemic changes are needed in welfare services, and entrepreneurial activity within both commercial and non-profit organisations is essential for processes of renewal. Always the most effective form of entrepreneurship may not be that of traditional commercial enterprise. Especially intrapreneurship both in public and private organisations as well as social entrepreneurship should be utilised more effectively. The results of the study encourage promoting diversity of services, cross-utilisation of resources, and collaboration between local actors. The DESI Project that was conducted in collaboration with the University of Jyväskylä, in turn, focused on the issue of intrapreneurship i.e. how health care workers can better develop their own work and workplace. Encouraging initiative and allowing flexible experimentation are keys to genuine renewal in organisations. The studied approach relied specifically on the entrepreneurial identification of opportunities and the application of design thinking methods in refining ideas. One of the outputs of the project is the Idea Window tool that enables employees to easily record various comments, ideas, and suggestions that are organised into visual clusters on, for example, a tablet screen. The tool supports spontaneous ideation, visualisation of complex matters and, distributed development processes. It also lowers the threshold for submitting ideas considerably. 6
Fostering entrepreneurial behaviour through institutions This research project ( ) focused on the role of institutions in enhancing entrepreneurial behaviour across nations. The research was built on the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor data which was augmented with data from several other sources. The project generated ten original research articles and 14 conference presentations as well as five annual research visits to the USA (to George Mason University, VA and University of Utah, UT). Next some of the findings of the projected are highlighted: One set of findings emphasized the different influences that institutions have on the rate and type of entrepreneurship across countries. If the governments seek to increase the number of new firms, they can focus on adjusting regulative institutional arrangements. If they pursue for high-impact entrepreneurial activity, the governments should enhance the conducive institutional arrangements in their country. These findings are from 'Stenholm, P., Acs, ZJ., Wuebker, R Globalization, Institutions, and Entrepreneurship: Exploring the Relationship between Country-Level Institutional Environment and Entrepreneurial Activity. Journal of Business Venturing 28 (1): '. A more qualitative approach on the role of institutions in entrepreneurial behaviour was investigated among Finnish farmers. The findings requested for a deeper understanding of the embedded role of surrounding institutions when entrepreneurs construct their identities. The sources of legitimacy they seek for, and their identities relationships with formal and informal institutional environment vary considerably. These findings are from 'Stenholm, P., Hytti, U In Search for Legitimacy under Institutional Pressures: A Case Study of Producer and Entrepreneur Farmer Identities. Journal of Rural Studies 35 (2): '. Other ongoing research projects VIPSE Valuable, Intangible and Prestigious Service Experiences ( ) is an ambitious international research project focusing on the role of social prestige experiences in the value-creation process. The project is a joint effort with the University of Vaasa and Victoria University (Australia). (Funded by Tekes) Agile Co-creation practices for business and service development ( ) is a multidisciplinary project that aims to generate new knowledge of the co-creation practice(s) of business development that take place in the interaction between service providers and their customers. The project engages researchers from five Finnish universities as well as service providers/service provider networks and their employees together with their customers in different parts of Finland. (Funded by Tekes) Evaluation of public business services for immigrant entrepreneurs in Finland ( ) concentrates to evaluate both the demand and supply of business services. Both entrepreneurs and service providers were interviewed for the study. The study focused on the TE-services. (Funded by the Ministry of Employment and the Economy) 7
GEM 10 years in TSE The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) project is a unique annual assessment of the entrepreneurial activity, aspirations and attitudes of individuals across a wide range of countries. The number of countries covered in the global GEM project is over 100. Now for its tenth year at the Turku School of Economics, the Entrepreneurship Unit has been in charge of the project and its practical and scientific outcomes. The GEM Finland team is led by Professor Anne Kovalainen. The two key researchers for the past ten years have been senior researcher, Dr. Pekka Stenholm and researcher Tommi Pukkinen. Currently other team members are also university teacher Sanna Suomalainen and Professor Jarna Heinonen. GEM Finland has provided research data for Stenholm s project and several of his publications. For policy purposes GEM Finland has provided invaluable data by covering the role of new entrepreneurship in the economic growth of Finland, unveiling in detail national features and characteristics associated with entrepreneurial activity and by comparing these to global data. Especially important for Finland are comparisons to other innovation-driven economies and EU countries. GEM data is robust harmonised data providing a more detailed picture of entrepreneurial activity not otherwise found in official national registry data sets. 8
Research seminars in entrepreneurship In 2014 a series of research seminars in entrepreneurship continued with two high quality seminars. The seminar series provide a forum for researchers to share their knowledge and discuss current topics on entrepreneurship and innovation research. The floor is open for our doctoral candidates as well as international quests and other research fellows interested in contributing to entrepreneurship research. Improving research skills and conquering the review process Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship Maija Renko from University of Illinois at Chicago (USA) gave a presentation of improving research skills and how to conquer the review process in Entrepreneurship research seminar in May. Her invigorating talk focused on one of her recent papers, Early challenges of nascent social entrepreneurs (published in the Entrepreneurship Theory & Practice, 37 (5), 1045 Maija Renko giving her presentation 1069). In her presentation Renko visualised how the paper was transformed during the review process. During the process she had to face different kinds of questions, of which two had a huge impact on the paper. The paper was reframed, and accordingly the theoretical model and its empirical testing were reconstructed. She concluded her presentation with encouraging words about academic publishing, and concluded that even if the process can be demanding, the outcome is usually clearly an improved version of the original research paper. Embodied entrepreneurs: identity formation and entrepreneurial legitimacy Research assistant Eva Kašperová from Kingston University s Small Business Research Centre visited the Entrepreneurship Unit in May. She presented her on-going dissertation work with a working title 'Embodied entrepreneurs: identity formation and entrepreneurial legitimacy at Entrepreneurship research seminar. She is undertaking doctoral research at Kingston Business School, investigating business start-up and Eva Kasperova (on the right) and staff of the Entrepreneurship Unit management practices of disabled people in the UK. Eva has expertise in researching a range of small business and entrepreneurship issues, including entrepreneurial identity, embodiment and legitimacy; disability and entrepreneurship; gender; policy and regulation; and entrepreneurship in different contexts. 9

The conference was organised by Entrepreneurship and Pori Unit. Professors Jarna Heinonen and Ulla Hytti chaired the conference (in the picture). 3E Conference (ECSB Entrepreneurship Education Conference) Through an innovative and untraditional format, the 3E conference has established a new paradigm for entrepreneurship conferences. Unlike more traditional academic events, the conference focused on problems and questions rather than on ready-made solutions and presentations of research findings. It offered an exclusive and engaging opportunity for researchers, educators and politicians to debate and exchange their experiences of the major challenges and advances in enterprise education with a special and unique focus on Europe. 15 The Entrepreneurship Unit hosts or is a national partner in four research networks that work as platforms for active collaboration in research, knowledge spread, teaching and data collection: The Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) GEM project is an annual assessment of the entrepreneurial activity, aspirations and attitudes of individuals across a wide range of countries. As the Finnish National Team we are part of a network of over 100 National Teams all over the globe participating in the project. The network of National Teams represents over 500 experts in entrepreneurship research. European Network for Social and Economic Research (ENSR) We are a Finnish member in the European Network for Social and Economic Research (ENSR) which is a network of member-organisations in 33 EU and EEA countries specialised in applied social and economic research. In total, more than 600 highly qualified researchers cooperate in the network. Main clients include the European Commission, national governments, business associations, and the like. The network carries out joint research projects of various topics. In 2014 we participated in projects that studied the current state of women entrepreneurship across the EU and the EEA countries, types of approaches countries use in regulating food and drinks advertisements towards children, and licenses and permits needed when starting a business. European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB) We host the Secretariat of the European Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ECSB). It is a non-profit organisation whose main objective is to advance the understanding of entrepreneurship and to improve the competitiveness of SMEs in Europe. The ECSB is an affiliation to the International Council for Small Business and Entrepreneurship (ICSB). ECSB organises high-quality conferences for its members, such as the RENT conference in co-operation with EIASM, in order to facilitate and enhance the exchange of knowledge within the ECSB membership. Research Director Ulla Hytti is a member of the ECSB Board. Through ECSB and ICSB we can reach a network of few thousand entrepreneurship researchers and educators world-wide. TCLS Research Network We host Turku Centre for Labour Studies (TCLS) research network which gathers multidisciplinary research on work and working life, entrepreneurship and self-employment included. TCLS network covers research and teaching activities on various forms of work, employment, self-employment and economic activities. TCLS acts at the University level and connects the seven faculties of the University of Turku, Åbo Akademi University and several other Research Units nationally and internationally. TCLS organises an international multidisciplinary research conference every second year, and the next one will take place 2015, gathering over 300 researchers globally to Turku School of Economics. The network also organises local seminars and does outreach activities locally and nationally, following the third task of the University. 15
Positions of trust in scientific community In Entrepreneurship Unit we continue to put increasing efforts in impact of our activities on scientific community. 18 INSPIRING LEARNING EXPERIENCES 2590 ECTS accomplished Balance between academia and business life Offered14 bachelor and master level courses TWO courses entirely online SEVEN dissertations in progress Several participative methods employed in each course In entrepreneurship we offer education at all academic degree levels. In addition, our faculty is active in training programmes offered by executive education, TSE exe, and in Open University, for example. The strength of entrepreneurship education is embedded with the faculty s close connection to research in entrepreneurship. Our researchers and teachers are often asked as guest lecturers, speakers and experts by numerous stakeholders nationally and internationally. We also collaborate closely with student association and Boost Turku an open student-based entrepreneurship society for new start-ups, where young entrepreneurs and entrepreneur-minded people can expand their networks and share knowledge. Boost Turku has been especially involved in our YRY and YR7 courses by arranging together with us e.g. pitching-lessons for the students. In addition, Boost Turku has provided possibilities for us to use their innovative premises. In 2014 we continued the pedagogical reform and skills development project started in 2013 to improve the pedagogical competences among our staff and this way also the education offered to students. Within this project two pedagogical workshops were organised. In March Mari Murtonen from the Unit for University Pedagogy shared her knowledge on teaching methods and student centered learning. During the workshop we discussed for example how to choose appropriate teaching methods for various contents, the ways to motivate and activate students and invigorate teaching especially in the mass lectures. During his visit in November, Senior lecturer Marco van Gelderen organised a workshop on entrepreneurship pedagogy. In the workshop Dr. van Gelderen related his experiences and resources regarding a program on the development of enterprising competencies. Being a workshop and not a lecture, participants were engaged in some reflection and practice exercises, in order to find out whether elements of this program may be of interest to their own teaching practice. In addition, TIAS Collegium Researcher Pekka Stenholm and University Lecturer Sanna Suomalainen have taken part in the Basics of University Pedagogy training (10 ECTS) at the University of Turku. 18
Entrepreneurship studies In Entrepreneurship studies we aim to advance students skills and know-how to recognize, create and exploit new business opportunities in all kinds of companies. In our teaching we believe, that entrepreneurship is about how you create a successful organisation in a dynamic and constantly changing business environment; how to recruit innovative employees, how to coordinate their work and how to build a productive entrepreneurial organisation culture. In addition, we offer students both individual and societal views for entrepreneurship, for example what kind of career opportunities entrepreneurship offers and how entrepreneurship is promoted in society. Entrepreneurship as a discipline is highly research-oriented with its numerous international research projects and outcomes (e.g. publications, scientific and societal impact). Consequently, Entrepreneurship is a relatively small discipline at the Turku School of Economics in terms of number of degrees. It is a popular minor subject and also single courses reach wider audiences. Furthermore, the staff has contributed to guiding and supervising degree students across disciplines. Development of Entrepreneurship studies in terms of study credits and degrees Study credits (ECTS) Graduated students (B.Sc.) Graduated students (M.Sc.) Graduated students (Dr.Sc.)
In my opinion, the group work was great due to its varying forms - it never got boring. Student feedback Bachelor studies Our aim at the bachelor level is to provide students with a theoretical and practical knowledge of entrepreneurship. Our bachelor studies focus on the entrepreneurial process and understanding the role of entrepreneurship in an individual and in a societal level. Entrepreneurship studies provide tools for students to work in a constantly changing, innovative business environment after graduation despite of the career choice. During entrepreneurship studies we emphasize active connections to the business life e.g. through visiting lecturers and excursions. Masters studies Our master studies focus on enhancing research skills through courses related to theoretical perspectives, classics and current issues in entrepreneurship research and research methods. Master studies provide a possibility to specialize in an interesting research area. In entrepreneurship course I learned how to work in teams, create opportunities, got to see how real world looks like. Student feedback Visiting guest lecturers Senior Lecturer Marco Van Gelderen (VU University Amsterdam, The Netherlands) participated in teaching in entrepreneurship course YR1 Opportunity creation and assessment. Marco facilitated a successful intensive week for students. The intensive week focused on the development of so-called enterprising competencies soft skills underlying entrepreneurship such as generating ideas for opportunities, taking action, perseverance, networking, teamwork, and influencing. A culmination of intensive week was a full day event called Opportunity Day. The Opportunity Day was made for an exciting trip which took teams of participants around Turku for a full day. During this day teams worked on a variety of challenges that were all designed to let them show enterprising behaviour. The aim of the day was not only completing the challenges but to show as much enterprising behaviour as possible. They visited many interesting places and met new individuals from different cultures. The development of enterprising skills was taken in a broad sense not in the narrow sense of starting a new venture. Teams were competing for the title of Most Enterprising Team. After the Opportunity Day every team presented what they had done during the day. The purpose of the presentation was to convince the audience that your team was the most enterprising team. The other teams (per team) and the lecturer each had a vote to decide on the winner. Professor Thomas Cooney from Dublin Institute of Technology is a regular visiting guest lecturer in entrepreneurship. He is a teacher and facilitator in the course YR2 Venture Creation. The highly popular course on venture creation is targeted to those who wish to learn about, or have considered, the establishment of a new venture. Professor Cooney s solid experience on teaching through the use of case studies is fully exploited at the course. Professor Cooney has over 20 years of experience in research and lecturing in the area of entrepreneurship. He has a special interest in entrepreneurial teams, entrepreneurship policy and minority entrepreneurship. 20
PhD studies The primary purpose of PhD studies is the preparation of a piece of original entrepreneurship research. Our PhD studies are designed to train doctoral candidates as independent researchers, so that they can claim professional standing as academic staff or profession requiring skills in entrepreneurship research. PhD studies consist of dissertation and PhD courses. Entrepreneurship research seminar series provides our doctoral candidates excellent learning opportunities and also possibilities to discuss their PhD projects with peers and senior researchers and professors. During the PhD process international research visits and fellowships are encouraged. Dissertations in progress We provide several doctoral candidates a possibility to conduct their PhD research projects and studies. The following dissertations were in progress in Jatta Jännäri: Doing gender in media: gendered representations of business leaders in media Hanna Laalo: The ideal of entrepreneurial subjectivity in higher education (Faculty of Education) Thomas Lemström: Entrepreneurship and institutions in health care Katri Luomala: Mumpreneurs? Being a self-employed mother in Finland Laura Nummelin: Entrepreneurial value creation: Co-creating socially constructed prestige value Tommi Pukkinen: Firm renewal and performance: the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, dynamic capabilities, innovation and performance Sanna Suomalainen: Academic entrepreneurship: intention realization process YR7 Pitching lesson YRY Students and teachers in pitching seminar 21
Other entrepreneurship education activities Entrepreneurship in executive education Entrepreneurship is also highly visible in most of executive education programmes offered by the TSE exe. Members of entrepreneurship staff are used as teachers and experts as well as supervisors of emba and JOKO theses. Most importantly entrepreneurship and innovation is one key ILO (Intended Learning Outcome) of the emba programme of the Turku School of Economics. As to entrepreneurship, the main themes studied in emba programme and other executive programmes include entrepreneurial swing and corporate entrepreneurship, new business opportunities and opportunity creation as well as entrepreneurial work and growth. In addition, Professor Jarna Heinonen serves as a Chair of emba Programme Committee which is responsible for increasing faculty commitment in the emba programme of the TSE. Entrepreneurship for UTUGS Doctoral Candidates For the second time we were requested by the UTUGS Board to organise a course on entrepreneurship for the UTUGS doctoral candidates in different faculties within the University of Turku. An intensive course Entrepreneurship for Research professionals was organised in the fall 2014 and about 13 students enrolled the course. The course provided an introduction to entrepreneurship by looking at entrepreneurship at individual, company and societal level. The core themes include entrepreneurship as a career It [the course] widened my understanding on entrepreneurs, entrepreneurial opportunities, and the importance of entrepreneurial behaviour in organisational and societal context. I now understand how rooted entrepreneurship is in all aspects of economic life and how important its role is as an engine of economic growth all over the world. Student feedback opportunity; business idea and opportunity creation; business planning; business growth; corporate entrepreneurship within existing organisations (private and public ones); as well as the role of entrepreneurship in the society. The course provided theoretical perspective on entrepreneurship and it did not focus on practical aspects of starting up a business or becoming an entrepreneur. The course gathers together doctoral candidates from different faculties and therefore provides a multidisciplinary forum for studying and discussing entrepreneurship. Based on student feedback and learning diaries the course was highly successful and useful. As in 2013 also in 2014 the course has succeeded in widening the students thinking and perceptions about entrepreneurship. Entrepreneurship in Open University and for other faculties Open University education is open to all regardless of age or educational background and the educational objectives and requirements correspond to regular degree studies. Our collaboration with Open University of Turku has enabled us to provide a total of seven courses to over a hundred nondegree-students. We have provided our courses for degree students of other faculties mainly as a part of Business Competence -module, which provides basic knowledge of business administration. Some entrepreneurship courses are open for other faculties through JOO studies. 22
INTERACTION WITH SOCIETY AND OTHER ACTIVITIES Our activities contribute significantly to the third task of the university: societal impact and interaction with society. Our close relations with business life and policy makers indicate that our expertise in entrepreneurship research, education and development is relevant for and appreciated by the society in general, and our customers particularly. Our staff serves as board members in different organisations and its expertise is continuously requested in national and international expert assignments such as for the OECD and European Science Foundation. The research done in the Entrepreneurship Unit has wider impact as the outcomes have contributed to societal policies and decision-making. The research has been used for instance in designing legislation, re-organising the activities of specific public agencies supporting SMEs, and informing entrepreneurship policy makers on research findings. For example in 2014 we started a study on service needs and experiences of public business services of immigrant entrepreneurs. Based on the findings suggestions will be made for the development of services and for the promotion of immigrant entrepreneurship. Discussing and presenting the research findings in professional magazines, popular press and national and international events is also a way for us to make societal impact. Events Top Management Forum 2014 Jarna Heinonen at Top Management Forum The annual Top Management Forum gathers together about 200 customers and stakeholders of the Turku School of Economics, and the TSE exe particularly. Professor Jarna Heinonen was invited to give a keynote speech in the Top Management Forum 2014 organised by the TSE exe. Heinonen s presentation touched upon the changing work and she asked the audience to ponder whether new work is an opportunity or a threat for the employees, managers and organisations. She also challenged the participants to step out of their comfort zone in order to enjoy and improve their performance at work. 23
OECD-European Commission HEInnovate Workshop Professor Jarna Heinonen was an invited guest speaker and facilitator in the international HEInnovate Workshop in Vilnius, Lithuania in June, 2014 organised by OECD and European Commission. The aim of the workshop was to provide participants with an opportunity to become familiar with the new HEInnovate tool. HEInnovate is an online self-assessment tool for Entrepreneurial Higher Education Institutions that was developed by the Directorate General, Education and Culture of the European Commission and the Local Economic and Employment Development Programme of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Participants of HEInnovate Workshop Thus, the workshop focused on discussing and presenting examples of measures, programmes and initiatives run in higher education institutions to promote innovation and entrepreneurship. In her presentation Professor Heinonen focused on the entrepreneurship studies of the Turku School of Economics. Universities have a critical role to play, by providing education that promotes entrepreneurial mind sets and behaviours, providing support to graduates and staff interested in starting up enterprises and acting entrepreneurially themselves as institutions. While universities in Europe are beginning to introduce practices in this area, the progress is uneven, both within and across countries, and efforts are needed to spread the most promising initiatives and level up performance. The workshop gathered together about 30 researchers, educators and experts all over Europe. European Day of the Entrepreneur 2014 Entrepreneurship Unit participated in an appreciated networking event The European Day of the Entrepreneur 2014 in Turku. The main event of EDE was held on 4 June 2014 at Sigyn-sali. The keynote speaker was charismatic Arman Alizad who reflected his experiences of entrepreneurship and conducting martial arts series Kill Arman. The purpose of the day is to bring together entrepreneurs and those who are interested in business life. The main organiser is Turku Region Development Centre. 24

ENTREPRENEURSHIP UNIT IN FIGURES Around half of our 1 million EUR revenues come from the Ministry of Education and Culture and other half is won through competitive tendering and research proposals. We are, thus, relatively dependent on competitive research funding and fortunately have been successful in gaining it. In addition to the Ministry of Education and Culture, the Academy of Finland and TEKES and are our most important financiers. Main sources of finance in 2014 Financially Entrepreneurship Unit has always been a profitable unit. This has given us a possibility to invest in international research collaboration and our competence building and to secure solid enough ground for academic research although we work project-based. In 2014 our research team in Entrepreneurship consisted of two professors, Academy professor, four doctors, seven researchers and a research assistant. In addition, we employed administrative staff and trainees. 27
