REVIEW OF THE YEAR 2013 The mission of the Turku School of Economics (TSE) is to generate internationally highly regarded and impactful research and learning for the development of entrepreneurial, innovative and responsible businesses and a sustainable society. Entrepreneurship researchers and teachers at the TSE take the mission as a challenge to further develop their activities. Entrepreneurship research has long traditions and track record in the Turku School of Economics and therefore entrepreneurship is one of the focus areas of the School. Our centre is the leading entrepreneurship research centre in Finland. We have also progressed in establishing international reputation in the field of entrepreneurship research as demonstrated in the pages of the Annual Report Members of our staff serve in numerous scientific duties internationally, such as editorships in quality journals, international research projects, expert assignments and organising committees of conferences. In all, the international visibility of our staff is gradually and systematically increasing e.g. plenary speeches in conferences as well as invitations for research fellowships and visits clearly indicate that our staff s experience is being internationally recognised. Our persevering work in the field of entrepreneurship bore fruit as our teaching resources finally were strengthened in A new university teacher was recruited and it improved our possibilities to develop our entrepreneurship studies at Bachelor s, Master s and postgraduate levels. We also integrated the resources of our entrepreneurship research group TSE Entre and our faculty as we all moved in to the new Department of Management and Entrepreneurship. We hope, that this new environment gives us a more solid ground for systematically developing our faculty-based research and teaching activities together with other subjects and staff members in the department and the TSE. In 2013 we also intensified our international research collaboration. Professor Robert Blackburn from the Kingston University, London, started as a fixed term professor in entrepreneurship. The joint target for the forthcoming years is to establish more institutionalised and longstanding research and teaching collaboration with his home university. This far his experience and expertise has supported particularly our doctoral training. In addition, we hosted two Norwegian part-time research fellows from Nordlands Research Institute and BodØ University. Although providing impactful research and international learning experiences being high in our agenda, we put increasing efforts in societal impact. We have active relationships with leading research institutions and universities as well as stakeholders nationally and internationally. Continuous demand in numerous national and international expert assignments demonstrates that our staff s expertise is highly valued also outside the academia. Balancing between impactful research, teaching and societal interaction is an interesting challenge and it takes some entrepreneurial mindset to succeed in this highly competitive game! Jarna Heinonen Professor in Entrepreneurship Director of the TSE Entre research group 3

PROFILE RESEARCH ON ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND NEW WORK MODES Entrepreneurship is one of the focal research areas of the Turku School of Economics. Research on entrepreneurship focuses on studying entrepreneurship and innovation processes as well as entrepreneurial behavior and new work modes in a changing society. The main interest lies in investigating the role of entrepreneurship in different economic, social, and cultural contexts. Our research on entrepreneurship ranges from business startups to innovative companies seeking growth and global presence as well as to any other innovative organisation seeking renewal and change. MULTIDISCIPLINARY SCHOLARLY EXCELLENCE AND POLICY RELEVANCE We work internationally and emphasise scholarly excellence and policy relevance based on solid scientific knowledge in entrepreneurship particularly. The cornerstones of our entrepreneurship research are well-established multidisciplinary research teams, high-profile international research initiatives and networks, long experience in contract research as well as intensive cooperation with policy-makers. Our financiers include e.g. the Academy of Finland, various ministries, other governmental bodies such as Tekes and Finnvera, federations, municipalities and EU institutions. RESULTS THROUGH INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION We are active in the international scientific community, for example in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor research programme. We are also hosting the secretariat of the European Council for Small Business (ECSB). The staff members are participating in and organising international research conferences, as well as serving on the editorial boards of high-ranking entrepreneurship journals. 4

ENTREPRENEURSHIP IN FIGURES TSE Entre is very dependent on revenues coming from outside financiers. About two thirds of our 1 million EUR revenues are won through competitive tendering and research proposals. Ministry of Education and Culture, TEKES and the Academy of Finland are the most important single financiers. Financially TSE Entre has always been a profitable unit. This has given us a possibility to invest on our competence building and to secure solid enough ground for the staff although we work project-based. In 2013 our team in Entrepreneurship consisted of two professors, Academy professor, one Academy Researcher and five doctors. In 2013, we employed 14 experts working as a bridge between the academia and business. Academy of Finland 21% EU financing 2% Foundations 2% Main sources of finance in 2013 Ministry of Education and Culture 34% TEKES 32% Other Ministries 9% 5

RESEARCH WITH IMPACT The cornerstones of our research are: Well-established multidisciplinary research teams High-profile international research initiatives and networks Long experience in contract research Intensive co-operation with policy makers Our basic research provides a solid basis for applied research, for different commissioned researches and for the development and education projects. Our entrepreneurship research group Entre consists of about a dozen researchers with various scientific backgrounds, who cooperate on several interesting research and development projects. OUR MOST IMPORTANT ONGOING RESEARCH PROGRAMMES AND PROJECTS Minna Canth Academy professor research project: Gendered Economy Embedded in Equality? ( ) Academy Professorship research project. The project has several international collaborations and visits from Stanford University (prof. Longino, prof. Miner, prof. Etzkowitz) and University of Essex (Halewood) to University of Turku, national and international workshops and working groups organised in several conferences during The analysis of how the various forms of economic activities and institutions are gendered, and shaped by gendered social structures and agencies forms one key basis of the research project. Another key basis of the research project is the analysis of the knowledge formation and its epistemic and ontological commitments and relations throughout the project. The reflexivity of the research on gender and its formation is key element. The project and its subprojects are interdisciplinary, related and linked to each other. The research project is located in and questions the equality society in the global economy. In addition to global aspect, the project has a specific comparative element in its empirical settings to Nordic countries. The theoretical frames used by researchers in the project consist of gender theories, critical analysis of the key concepts of social theory and their relation to feminist epistemologies, ontologies and to process ontologies. (Lead by Academy professor Anne Kovalainen and funded by the Academy of Finland). See for more detailed information Gender and growth in family firms: from 1750 until present ( ) is an international research project which takes a multidisciplinary approach on analysing gender and growth in a family business context. INTERVIEW: Professors of Entrepreneurship at the Turku School of Economics Jarna Heinonen and Robert Blackburn are Professors of Entrepreneurship at the TSE. Jarna is also Director of Entre research group, and Robert leads the Small Business Research Centre at Kingston University, London. Professors Robert Blackburn and Jarna Heinonen share an interest towards the role of entrepreneurship in a changing society. They also share an interest in policy driven research, which means that they are used to do contract research and actively participate into social discussion on societal changes particularly from the entrepreneurship point of view. Their joint research activities derive from the variety of societal changes affecting entrepreneurship, such ageing society, changes in the labour markets, restructuring of traditional industrial sectors, new emerging industries, fields, and markets, globalization, and innovation. Third age entrepreneurship is one of the recent research interests of their entrepreneurship research groups. According to their studies older people have many good ideas and opportunities to startup new businesses. On the other hand, they may face obstacles such as individual or cultural barriers, which hinder or restrict the implementation of their entrepreneurial endeavours. 9 DISSERTATIONS IN PROGRESS We provide several doctoral candidates a possibility to conduct their PhD research projects and studies. The following dissertations were in progress in Thomas Lemström Katri Luomala Tommi Pukkinen Sanna Suomalainen Entrepreneurship and Institutions in Health Care Mumpreneurs? Being a self-employed mother in Finland Firm renewal and performance: the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, dynamic capabilities, innovation and performance Academic entrepreneurship: intention realization process RESEARCH SEMINARS IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP A series of research seminars in entrepreneurship continued throughout the academic year. In 2013 we organised three high quality multidisciplinary research seminars and one successful seminar on academic publishing. The objective of the seminar series is to provide a forum for researchers to discuss topical issues on entrepreneurship and innovation research. The floor is open for our doctoral candidates as well as international quests and other research fellows interested in contributing to and sharing their research findings on entrepreneurship research. Gender, growth and family businesses In March the research seminar gathered together a multidisciplinary and international group of presenters giving presentations on gender, family firms, and firm growth. Our Senior Research Fellows, Gry Alsos and Elisabet Ljunggren from Norway, outlined the seminar with their presentation about entrepreneurial families and households in rural Norway and Scotland. Their presentation was followed by research Ulla Ijäs, Researcher in Finnish history. In her presentation she focused on famous merchant family, Hackman, and how actual the role of gender has been during the consecutive business successions the Hackman family (as a family firm) has undergone. Slightly similar, genderrelated results were covered in Veli Toropainen s vivid talk about local independent albeit wealthy daughters in Turku in early 17 th century. Their behavior could be summarised as pretty efficient what comes to spending family money. The seminar was concluded by the presentation of Ljunggren, Alsos and Professor Ulla Hytti (University of Turku, Pori Unit) both of whom familiarised the participants with the on-goings of their research on emotions in family business succession and the inheritance of patriarchic structures in family business. International perspectives on Academic publishing and Saudi Women s interest in entrepreneurship In the next seminar the focus was on academic publishing. This session provided an opportunity to hear the experiences of Professor Robert Blackburn who shared some of his extensive experience in academic publishing. As the editor-in-chief of the International Small Business Journal (SAGE) 9

he provided views which will be useful for everyone who is pursuing to get one s research published internationally. Later, Professor in Management Tatiana Manolova (Bentley University, USA) visited us and gave a talk on Young Saudi Women s Interest in Entrepreneurship covering gender related, institutional and entrepreneurial issues in emerging economies. Doctoral candidates The next research seminar focused solely on the research of two doctoral candidates majoring in entrepreneurship. The theme of the research seminar was Opportunity recognition and innovation creation in SMEs. Doctoral candidates Riikka Franzen and Gospel Oparaocha introduced the audience with their topics. This was followed by lively discussion and commentary sessions. 13 INTERNATIONAL LEARNING EXPERIENCES In entrepreneurship we offer education at all academic degree levels. In addition, our faculty is active in training programmes offered by executive education, TSE exe, and in Open University, for example. The strength of entrepreneurship education is embedded with the faculty s close connection to research in entrepreneurship. Our researchers and teachers are often asked as guest lecturers, speakers and experts by numerous stakeholders nationally and internationally. We also collaborate closely with student association and Boost Turku an open student-based entrepreneurship society for new startups, where young entrepreneurs and entrepreneur-minded people can expand their networks and share knowledge. Boost Turku has been especially involved in our YRY and YR7 courses by arranging together with us e.g. pitching-lessons for the students. In addition, Boost Turku has provided possibilities for us to use their innovative premises. In order to reach both the art and Pitching-lesson for our YRY students at Boost Turku science of entrepreneurship we not only actively study entrepreneurship education, but also started to invest in our pedagogical competences. In 2013 we launched a pedagogical reform and skills development project among our staff. The results are to be seen in the following years. ENTREPRENEURSHIP STUDIES FOR DEGREE STUDENTS In Entrepreneurship studies we aim to advance students skills and know-how to recognize, create and exploit new business opportunities in all kinds of companies. Entrepreneurship studies focus on enhancing entrepreneurial key competencies and problem solving and analytical skills. In our teaching we believe that entrepreneurship is about how you create a successful organisation in a dynamic and constantly changing business environment; how to recruit innovative employees, how to coordinate their work and how to build a productive entrepreneurial organisation culture. In addition, we offer students both individual and societal views for entrepreneurship, for example what kind of career opportunities entrepreneurship offers and how entrepreneurship is promoted in society. Entrepreneurship graduates have a broad range of career prospects in entrepreneurial firms, large enterprises and public institutions. The competence provided in this programme will prepare students for leading entrepreneurial innovations, managing business development, and working in business policy and strategy positions. The following are some potential career paths of graduates from our programme: CEO, specialist/consultant on entrepreneurial issues and policy, business development manager, small business owner-manager, growth strategy and expansion advisor. 13

Bachelor studies In the Bachelor s level, the groundwork for forthcoming courses and career will be formed. Our aim at the bachelor level is to provide students with a theoretical and practical knowledge of entrepreneurship. Our bachelor studies focus on the entrepreneurial process and understanding the role of entrepreneurship in an individual and in a societal level. Students will become familiar with entrepreneurial processes and the role of entrepreneurship in different organisations. During entrepreneurship studies we emphasise active connections to the business life - students will look at actual businesses via case-studies, visiting lecturers and excursions. One of the excursions in year 2013 was made to Logomo Byrå. In addition, in the future we are organising a possibility for students to take a recognised study module abroad to support their international skills. Through bachelor s studies our aim is to enhance students innovativeness, creativity and entrepreneurial mindset. Entrepreneurship studies provide tools for students to work in a constantly changing, innovative business environment after graduation despite of the career choice. Systeemi goes Entrepreneurship In 2013 also students became more aware of and interested in entrepreneurship studies. They organised themselves in the frame of Systeemi student organisation by launching a special division for those students majoring in entrepreneurship. The collaboration with students has been vivid from the very beginning and they have for example contributed to etrepreneurship course development. Excursion to Logomo Byrå, Entrepreneur Minna Jauhonen, Someco Master s studies In the Master s level students will reach for professional and personal goals through choice of courses and concentrations they pursue. The flexible structure of the entrepreneurship Master s programme allow students to tailor their specialisation to suit their own career focus. We provide students methodological and advanced courses to complete their master s thesis. Our master studies focus on enhancing these research skills through courses related to theoretical perspectives, We also took part in Systeemi goes Entrepreneurship event on 11 th of November organized by Systeemi. The main aim of this event was to enhance students knowledge on entrepreneurship. The event brought together students, university staff and entrepreneurs to share their experiences building businesses and enthusiasm for entrepreneurship. Our role was to promote entrepreneurship studies and to increase our visibility among the students. The event was successful due to active discussion and interesting speakers. 14

classics and current issues in entrepreneurship research and research methods. In year 2013 we organised for the first time a web-based course YRSe5 Advanced Reading in Entrepreneurship: In the future our aim is to increase the number of web-based courses. PhD studies The primary purpose of PhD studies is the preparation of a piece of original entrepreneurship research. Our PhD studies are designed to train doctoral candidates as independent researchers, so that they can claim professional standing as academic staff or profession requiring skills in entrepreneurship research. PhD studies consist of dissertation and PhD courses. Entrepreneurship research seminar series provides our doctoral candidates excellent learning opportunities and also possibilities to discuss their PhD projects with peers and senior researchers and professors. OTHER ENTREPRENEURSHIP EDUCATION ACTIVITIES Entrepreneurship in executive education Entrepreneurship is visible also in a number of executive education programmes offered by the TSE exe. Members of entrepreneurship staff are used as teachers and experts as well as supervisors of emba and JOKO theses. Most importantly entrepreneurship and innovation is one of the key ILOS (Intended Learning Outcome) of the emba programme of the Turku School of Economics. In addition, Professor Jarna Heinonen is the Academic director of the programme and serves as a Chair of emba Programme Committee which is responsible for increasing faculty commitment in the emba programme of the TSE. Entrepreneurship for UTUGS Doctoral Candidates For the first time we were requested by the UTUGS Board to organise a course on entrepreneurship for the UTUGS doctoral candidates in different faculties within the University of Turku. An intensive course Entrepreneurship for Research professionals was organised in the fall 2013 and about 35 students enrolled the course. The course provided an introduction to entrepreneurship by looking at entrepreneurship at individual, company and societal level. The core themes include entrepreneurship as a career opportunity; business idea and opportunity creation; business planning; business growth; corporate entrepreneurship within existing organisations (private and public ones); as well as the role of entrepreneurship in the society. The course provided theoretical perspective on entrepreneurship and it s primary goal was not to focus on practical aspects of starting up a business or becoming an entrepreneur. Based on student feedback and learning diaries the course was highly successful and useful. Entrepreneurship in Open University and for other faculties Open University education is open to all regardless of age or educational background and the educational objectives and requirements correspond to regular degree studies. Our collaboration with 15

Open University of Turku has enabled us to provide a total on seven courses to over a hundred non-degreestudents. We have provided our courses for degree students of other faculties mainly as a part of Business Competence -module, which provides basic knowledge of business administration. Some entrepreneurship courses are open for other faculties through JOO studies. In 2013 we also launched our Facebook site TSE Entrepreneurship where you can find our newest updates. Visiting guest lecturer Professor Thomas Cooney from Dublin Institute of Technology is a regular visiting guest lecturer in entrepreneurship. He is a teacher and facilitator in the course YR2 Venture Creation. The highly popular course on venture creation is targeted to those who wish to learn about, or have considered, the establishment of a new venture. Professor Cooney s solid experience on teaching through the use of case studies is fully exploited at the course. Professor Cooney has over 20 years of experience in research and lecturing in the area of entrepreneurship. He has a special interest in entrepreneurial teams, entrepreneurship policy and minority entrepreneurship. TSE Entrepreneurship Facebook site 16
