1 May April CELEBRATE FIVE AMAZING YEARS! This spring, Animal Allies Humane Society celebrates the five-year anniversary of opening the Muriel Whiteside Adoption Center on Airport Road. The Murial Whiteside Adoption Center opened in the spring of Building this stateof-the-art facility has made a drastic difference in the lives of local homeless companion animals. The shelter not only provides a space for top-notch care for animals in need, it has also created a welcoming Ground Breaking Event, Fall atmosphere for visitors, volunteers, and adopters to become more involved with the mission of Animal Allies. The animals appreciate the natural light as they await a loving home. Betsy Bode, who has been with Animal Allies since 2008, remembers what it was like to be a part of the new shelter. It was amazing to watch the progress from plans, to a hole in the ground, to a facility of our own. What struck me the most after the building was completed in addition to the amount of space we had was how light and bright everything was. Animal Allies previously operated out of a building with no windows in the dog kennels. Now we have windows that cover most of the exterior walls. The cats, too, have access to natural light, from the large windows in the condo rooms to the skylights in the community rooms. The difference is like night and day. Finnegan was one of the 1,825 animals adopted out of the new facility in spay or neuter surgeries have been performed on shelter and owned cats and dogs, reducing the number of unwanted litters in our community. Using the new shelter s Humane Education Room, Animal Allies began educating youth about compassion and care toward animals with camps, birthday parties, and other programs building a future for local animal welfare. The Humane Education program now reaches 10,000 young people annually. The Humane Education room has been an asset for presentations and demonstrations. We invite you to honor five years of achievements by joining us for an open house celebration and adoption event on Saturday, May 10th from 10am-6pm. In the first year of operations, the number of adoptions in Duluth doubled from 916 adoptions in 2008 to 1,825 adoptions in And the number has grown from there. Animal Allies also partnered with an independent, veterinarian-owned practice that year to launch the Northland Spay/Neuter program and open Minnesota s first stationary lowcost, high-quality spay/neuter clinic. To date, over 30,000 Ribbon cutting at Northland Spay/ Neuter, Fall Energy and excitement surrounds the new facility and inspires all who visit to make a difference in the lives of homeless pets. The building represents all that can be accomplished when a community works together. Our amazing volunteers can do their work even better in the new building.

2 ZERO: AN ONGOING CHALLENGE Five years ago, through the generosity of the community, Animal Allies Humane Society built and moved into its very own facility, the Muriel Whiteside Adoption Center. With this new shelter, the care and treatment of homeless companion animals in our community improved greatly. Since opening the shelter, continued community support has allowed Animal Allies to achieve many major milestones. Rick and Chantey In just five years, this organization has: Found homes for over 10,000 cats and dogs. Spayed or neutered over 30,000 animals through the Northland Spay/Neuter program. Reached nearly 40,000 youth through the Humane Education program. Beside these large and impressive numbers, there is another number even more important to us and the animals: zero. In the past, Duluth like many communities in the US regularly euthanized healthy homeless animals. But the people of our community believed we could do better. In 2010, Animal Allies collaborated with area organizations, businesses, and other community members to launch the Campaign for Zero with the goal of eliminating euthanasia of healthy homeless companion animals. I can proudly state that since setting that goal on January 1, 2010, the Campaign for Zero has been a success. How do we achieve this goal day after day, year after year? With progressive adoption and spay/neuter programs. With staff and volunteers who are committed to this campaign. And with supporters like you. You have volunteered, donated and adopted to make zero possible. Although successful, maintaining this commitment is an ongoing challenge. In the coming months, the shelter will experience an influx of stray animals, especially kittens. Animal Allies works daily with the goal of zero in mind, but we can only do it with the support of the community. Thank you for your volunteerism, donations, and adoptions. We are grateful for all that you have done for homeless pets and all that you will do in the future. The cats, dogs, puppies, and kittens depend on us all to deliver zero. For the animals, Rick Sailstad, Executive Director T: E: rick@animalallies.net P.S. The animals are counting on us. Please help uphold the commitment to the Campaign for Zero: donate today. 3 SPRING INTO ACTION! If our community raises $50,000 for Animal Allies by May 11, AMSOIL INC. will donate an additional $5,000 to help homeless pets! As of April 18th, we have raised $25,000 of the $50,000. We need your donation to meet this ambitious goal. Give at MEET MOLLI Molli was a resourceful mother who found hope for herself and her puppies at Animal Allies this January. When Molli was spotted at a distance by a St. Louis County resident, his first thought was that she was one of the chunkiest dogs he had ever seen. He got a surprise when, two days later, he discovered that she had wriggled through a small dog door into his enclosed porch and given birth to ten little puppies! Mom and pups made their way to Animal Allies, where they were placed into foster care. Eight weeks later, all eleven returned to the shelter and are now happily bouncing around in their new homes. These success stories would not be possible without donors like you. Thank you for your support. Photos by Paws to Claws Photography MEET MOLLI AND HER LITTER AT THE MOTHER S DAY CELEBRATION ON SUNDAY, MAY 11 AT ANIMAL ALLIES HUMANE SOCIETY. STAY TUNED TO OUR WEBSITE AND FACEBOOK PAGE FOR DETAILS. June Games Dogs and Cats Play What things can we do for shelter dogs and cats and our own animals at home to keep them busy, happy, healthy, out of trouble, and challenged? What steps does an animal go through from arrival to being adopted? Have fun teaching old and young dogs all kinds of new tricks, learning how to care for the daily health of animals, and make the dogs and cats really happy with games and activities suited to their dog-ness and cat-ness. Campers draw and write stories about the animals they meet to share with shelter visitors. July 7-11 Animals in Art and Story Many well-known artists honored animals with their images in artwork. Frida Kahlo used monkeys as a favorite theme of her self-portraits. She had many illnesses and traumas in her life, and her animals helped her to heal. There are local artists who regularly include animal images in their work. Campers can use shelter animals stories to inspire drawings, paintings, messages of responsibility, respect, safety, and kindness. Stories and art will help visitors to know more about our adoptable animals. Campers, come learn about artists and their animal subjects, meet shelter animals and hear stories of their lives, and use drawing, painting, sculpture, and stories to share cats and dogs lives through YOUR artwork. Exhibit your work for the public the weekend after camp. July Purrfectly Meowvelous Dogs and Cats Get to know our shelter dogs and cats, especially our long-term cat and dog residents. 10 THREE CHEERS FOR FOUR YEARS! For the fourth consecutive year, UDAC s Art Junction has collaborated with Animal Allies dogs and cats to create beautiful art. Work with shelter animals began in February and will continue through the end of May. The artwork includes: clay imprints, paintings, wall hangings, and jewelry. Some will even feature a photo of the animal who helped create the work. These pieces will be for sale at the Walk for Animals at Bayfront Park on June 7th. Adopters might even find a work that was created by their new family member! This winter has been extremely long and bitterly cold, but Animal Allies committed Dog Buddies know that our shelter residents need exercise, attention, and potty breaks no matter the weather. Neither subzero temps nor deep Gary, Jan, and Shari drifts of snow kept these dedicated volunteers from helping our canine friends! As an added bonus, UDAC s Art Junction donates each year s proceeds to help homeless animals at Animal Allies. Mark your calendar and don t miss this this this chance to own a unique and special work of art. Art Junction Clay Pieces SNOW BUDDIES BRAVE THE ELEMENTS! Cathy Art Junction Artist with Lula Art Junction Artist with Grey VOLUNTEER HOURS This year, volunteers donated 6,003 hours at Animal Allies Humane Society through the end of March. This is the equivalent of 13 full-time employees! A huge thank you goes out to our Dog and Cat Buddies, Interns, BARC trainers, Fosters, Docents, Humane Education Volunteers, Office Assistants, Board and Committee Members, and Special Event and Community Outreach Volunteers. We appreciate all that you do for the animals in the community! Together, we ve found homes for over 400 animals so far in CAN YOU HELP? Love Kittens and Puppies? Each year, fosters help us save the lives of hundreds of animals. Our biggest foster needs at Animal Allies are for kittens and puppies under eight weeks of age, and spring and summer are the busiest times of year for new litters. We re looking for homes that are willing to give the gift of love, care, and valuable time to the animals in our foster care program. Help Adopters Find Their New Best Friend. Docents/Shelter Greeters are needed Tuesday through Sunday from Noon to 6pm to greet visitors, give tours of the shelter, answer questions, and help potential adopters find a new family member! Get Involved Today For more information on volunteering, please contact Becky at volunteer@animalallies.net or call Thank you, Snow Buddies! You make the dogs time in the shelter so much more comfortable and enjoyable and our pups appreciate you so much. We are always looking to add to our team of hearty Dog Buddies who are not intimidated by our cold winters. If you enjoy the outdoors, and are ready to face any weather, please consider training as a Dog Buddy. Our volunteer hours are 8am to 4pm on Mondays, and 8am to 6pm Tuesday through Sunday. We re especially looking for early morning and late afternoon help. The dogs will be overjoyed to see you! Lisa Annette Joan and Ken
