The Problem of Gender Gender is NOT just arbitrarily assined inherent ender on nouns. Inanimates only rammatical ender Animates rammatical ender; natural sex Areement can occur with natural sex Problems arise when natural sex & rammatical ender conflict Rather than collapsin the t, the analysis presented here allows each to act in isolation & to interact with one another.
Outline I. French ender paradim II. Snapshot of the analysis III. Architecture IV. Kramer (2009) V. Application to French VI. Are t features necessary? VII.Conclusion
I. French ender paradim T ender system masculine & feminine Masculine the default Not reularly marked on nouns Marked on articles a) efinite: le (m) la (f) b) Indefinite: un (m) une (f) c) Possessive: mon (m) ma (f) Gender on inanimate nouns is purely rammatical a) un maasin a store (m) b) une maison a house (f) (Jones 1996)
I. French ender paradim (cont.) Gender on animate nouns interacts with natural sex Sex differences expressed in several ways Suppletive Forms Lexically differentiated by (conflated) sex & ender a) un homme a man b) une femme a man c) un boeuf a bull d) une vache a cow (Jones 1996)
I. French ender paradim (cont.) Stem Chane Phonoloy of masc/male form modified to enerate fem/female form a) un chat a (male) cat b) une chatte a female cat c) un étudiant a (male) student Article Chane Chane to form of article but not to form of stem Reserved for human nouns a) un enfant a (male) child b) une enfant a female child c) un élève a (male) student d) une élève a female student d) une étudiante a female student (Jones 1996)
I. French ender paradim (cont.) Epicenes No representation of natural sex Fixed rammatical ender a) une souris a mouse (f) b) un assassin an assassin (m) c) une sentinelle a sentry (f) d) un mannequin a fashion model (m) (Badecker 2007; Jones 1996) (1) Les sentinelles barbues ont été prises (*pris) en otae. The bearded.f.pl sentries were taken.f.pl (*taken.m) hostae. (from Wechsler & Zlatić 2003)
II. Snapshot of the Analysis qp male vs. female ET n P 5 [±fem] [±fem] Gender represented by 2 features: Feature on the root represents rammatical ender Feature on n represents natural sex masculine vs. feminine
III. Architecture Structure Elements from istributed Morpholoy (M) Lexicon consists of Vocabulary Items that are bundles of features Example: +1 +PL +NOM Late insertion of VIs [wi] we Cateory-neutral roots ( ) are inserted into the lexical heads (e.., N) ominated by heads that cateorize these roots Nominalizin head = n Mechanism Actual areement happens via Unvalued features are probes Probe down the tree to the first valued feature of the same type as the probe Value the feature identically 3 [_feature] 3 probe 3 [+feature] (Embick & Noyer 2007; Halle & Marantz 1994; Marantz 2001) (Chomsky 2001; Pesetsky & Torreo 2004)
IV. Kramer (2009) Gender features on n and the root (both [±fem]) Root = rammatical ender n = natural sex Three n heads housin features correspondin to sex 1) n[+fem] Female Natural Sex 2) n[-fem] Male Natural Sex 3) n No Natural Sex (efaults) / Epicenes Areement occurs with hihest ender feature Natural sex on n unless underspecified Grammatical ender on root otherwise 3 3 n P 4
V. Application to French (cont.) Article Chane Licensin Rule: All 3 ns possible Natural sex expressed (except in default case) (1) un enfant a male child (2) une enfant a female child [u:_fem] - n P [i:-fem] ENFANT [u:-fem] [u:_fem] + n P [i:+fem] ENFANT [u:-fem]
V. Application to French (cont.) Article Chane - efault Licensin Rule: All 3 ns possible In default case, rammatical ender is expressed (3) un enfant a child [u:_fem] - n P Ø ENFANT [u:-fem]
V. Application to French (cont.) Stem Chane (4) un étudiant a male student Licensin Rule: All 3 ns possible Natural sex expressed (except in default case) (5) une étudiante a female student [u:_fem] - n P [u:_fem] + n P [i:-fem] ÉTUIANT [u:-fem] [i:+fem] ÉTUIANT [u:-fem]
V. Application to French (cont.) Stem Chane - efault Licensin Rule: All 3 ns possible In default case, rammatical ender is expressed (6) un étudiant a student [u:_fem] - n Ø P ÉTUIANT [u:-fem]
V. Application to French (cont.) Suppletive Forms Licensin Rule: Only n matchin natural sex (= rammatical ender) Natural sex expressed (7) un homme a man (8) une femme a man [u:_fem] - n P [u:_fem] + n [i:-fem] HOMME [u:-fem] [i:+fem] P FEMME [u:+fem]
V. Application to French (cont.) Inanimate Nouns Licensin Rule: Only underspecified n Grammatical ender expressed (9) un maasin a store (masc) (10) une maison a house (fem) [u:_fem] - n P [u:_fem] + n P Ø MAGASIN [u:-fem] Ø MAISON [u:+fem]
V. Application to French (cont.) Epicenes Licensin Rule: Only underspecified n Grammatical ender expressed; natural sex cannot be expressed (11) un assassin an assassin (masc) (12) une souris a mouse (fem) [u:_fem] - n P [u:_fem] + n Ø ASSASSIN [u:-fem] Ø P SOURIS [u:+fem]
VI. Are t features really necessary? Short answer: Yes! Previous accounts of ender have attempted to use a sinle feature: Feature on n Lowenstamm (2008) Feature on the root Alexiadou (2004) Both fail to account for a subset of the French data.
VI.i Feature on n (Lowenstamm 2008) Gender feature on nominalizin head (i.e., n) Based on observations of final vowel patterns in French One head for each ender (i.e., [-fem] & [+fem] heads) Assumes functional cateories must have phonoloical content [+fem] = CV shell with [a] in vowel slot [-fem] = empty CV shell efault vowel inserted la moto the motorbike 3 rp l n I C V C V C V a m o t o
VI.i Feature on n (cont.) Simplifyin theory to feature on n head (no CV shell) (1) un enfant a male child - [u:_fem] n P 6 [i:-fem] ENFANT (2) une enfant a female child + [u:_fem] n P 6 [i:+fem] ENFANT
VI.i Feature on n (cont.) Problems: esined to account for inanimates with related roots, but does not easily extend to animates Limitin to t n heads means sex & ender must be conflated 1) n[+fem] Female Sex / Feminine Gender 2) n[-fem] Male Sex / Masculine Gender Sex & ender do not always pattern in this way (i.e., epicenes). (3) une sentinelle a male sentry sentry [u:_fem] + n Which feature should o here? [i:+fem ] P 6 SENTINELLE
VI.ii Feature on the root (Alexiadou 2004) Gender determined in t ways 1) Feature on the noun stem 2) Areement with a discourse referent (i.e., natural sex) Based on adjectival areement in Spanish, Italian, Greek, & Hebrew (1) un enfant a male child [u:_fem] - P ENFANT [u:-fem]
VI.ii Feature on the root (cont.) Problems: No procedure for areement with discourse referent Article chane nouns (e.., enfant) & stem chane nouns (e.., un chat vs. une chatte) Require t lexical entries: ENFANT [-fem]; ENFANT [+fem] Potential to enerate the wron form in the default case (2) un enfant a child (3) une enfant a female child [u:_fem] - P ENFANT [u:-fem] P [u:_fem] + ENFANT [u:+fem]
VI. Conclusions None of the theories of ender that posit a sinle feature (feature on the root, feature on n) account for all of the French data. Althouh formulated in response to Amharic data, only Kramer s theory a ender feature on n & the root covers the entire French paradim. Feature on n natural sex Feature on root rammatical ender This approach is successful for t very different lanuaes French (Romance) & Amharic (Afroasiatic) which suests this may be a eneral solution to the problem of ender representation.

Musins about Stem Chane Nouns Lowenstamm s full proposal includes procedures for eneratin nouns with similar, related stems by includin additional phonoloical content in n Relates la balle the ball and le ballon the balloon Claims they have a common stem, alon the lines of ball- The endin is a realization of n after left adjoinin the noun stem Thouh may not be quite riht, may be able to be adapted for stem chane nouns. Chane to stem in female form enerated as phonoloical content in n and affixed to stem
Licensin Rules Summary Licensin rules ensure that certain nouns mere with certain ns Inanimates underspecified n Grammatical ender expressed Suppletive forms n matchin natural sex Natural sex expressed Stem chane all 3 ns Natural sex expressed except in default case Open question: Where does the chane to the stem oriinate? Article chane all 3 ns Natural sex expressed except in default case Epicenes underspecified n Grammatical ender expressed without concern for natural sex
Areement with iscourse Referent Natural sex in this analysis could be construed as areement with a discourse referent. Epicenes - Strict areement with rammatical ender can be overridden provided enouh context. (1) Le mannequin et sa maquilleuse sont assises (*assis) dans le coin. The fashion model & her make-up artist are sittin.f.pl (*sittin.m) in the corner. (2) La sentinelle et sa femme ont été pris (*prises) en otae. The sentry and his wife were taken.m (*taken.f.pl) hostae. (Wechsler and Zlatić 2003)
Suppletive Forms Alternate Analysis (7b) un homme a man (8b) une femme a man [u:_fem] - n P [u:_fem] + n Ø HOMME [u:-fem] Ø P FEMME [u:+fem] Licensin Rule: Only underspecified n Grammatical ender (= natural sex) expressed
Gender Projection (Picallo 1991) Gender feature heads its own projection (Ge) ominates NP and is dominated by NumP Based on phonoloical realization of ender in Catalan Problems: Not semantically or syntactically necessary Independent projections can only be headed by features with semantic meanin (Chomsky 1995; Alexiadou 2004) Gender of a noun does not affect its semantics Arued not to drive purely syntactic operations (i.e., movement or aree in the purely Chomskian (2001) sense) Not always phonoloically distinct element
